Functional, Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Antifungal Activity of Edible Flowers.

Edible flowers have been used since ancient times, but their potential for improving human health has not been explored. This study aimed to evaluate the profile of bioactive compounds (organic acids, phenolics, and carotenoids) and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of nine flower varieties with high concentrations of carotenoids or total phenolic compounds. Ninety-three edible flowers were analysed for physicochemical characteristics, total phenolic and carotenoid concentrations, and antioxidant activity (ABTS). Bioactive profiles were determined by rapid resolution liquid chromatogr…

Geranium sylvaticum increases pollination probability by sexually dimorphic flowers.

Sexual dimorphism is expressed as different morphologies between the sexes of a species. Dimorphism is pronounced in gynodioecious populations which consist of female and hermaphrodite individuals. The small size of female flowers in gynodioecious species is often explained by resource re-allocation to seed production instead of large flowers. However, pollinator attraction is critical to female fitness, and factors other than resource savings are needed to explain the small size of female flowers. We hypothesized that the floral size dimorphism in the perennial gynodioecious Geranium sylvatic…

Honeybees Tolerate Cyanogenic Glucosides from Clover Nectar and Flowers.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) pollinate flowers and collect nectar from many important crops. White clover (Trifolium repens) is widely grown as a temperate forage crop, and requires honeybee pollination for seed set. In this study, using a quantitative LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) assay, we show that the cyanogenic glucosides linamarin and lotaustralin are present in the leaves, sepals, petals, anthers, and nectar of T. repens. Cyanogenic glucosides are generally thought to be defense compounds, releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide upon degradation. However, increasing evidence in…

AGAMOUS Coordinates Flower Development Beyond Organ Identity: AGAMOUS Coordinates Flower Development in Space and Time.

AGAMOUS (AG) is a C-class Mcm1, Agamous, Deficiens, and Serum response factor (MADS)-box transcription factor classically defined by its roles in specifying stamen and carpel identity and enforcing floral meristem determinacy. Accumulating evidence now indicates that AG also coordinates a series of late developmental programs whose outputs are rewired over time based on tissue context, chromatin state, and phytohormone-mediated inter-organ communication. In the gynoecium, AG promotes regional patterning and tissue differentiation by regulating downstream target genes, thereby supporting ovule-

Tufted hairs: A bouquet of flowers in different hair diseases.

Tufted hairs, an unusual hair follicle dysplasia, are characterized by several hair shafts grouped together, emerging from a single hair follicle-like "doll's hair". This clinical picture is considered characteristic of folliculitis decalvans (FD). However, the emergence of grouped hair shafts from a single follicle can also be observed in other hair disorders, even if not as a distinctive diagnostic sign. This paper aims to collect and analyze all clinical and trichoscopic features of different hair diseases with tufted hairs to find distinctive features, helping the clinician with the diagno
