Food quality, competition, and parasitism influence feeding preference in a neotropical lepidopteran.

We surveyed Lepidoptera found on 11 species of Inga (Fabaceae:Mimosoideae) co-existing on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, to evaluate factors influencing diet choice. Of the 47 species of caterpillars (747 individuals) recorded, each fed on a distinct set of Inga. In the field, 96% of the individuals were found on young leaves. Growth rates of caterpillars that were fed leaves in the laboratory were 60% higher on young leaves compared to mature leaves. When caterpillars were fed leaves of nonhost Inga, they grew more slowly. These data provide support for a link between preference and performan

Aggregate exposures under the Food Quality Protection Act: An approach using chlorpyrifos.

The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-170, August 3, 1996), which amended the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), requires that the EPA evaluate pesticide safety in light of potential aggregate exposures from both nondietary and dietary routes. As with any new legislation, there has been considerable discussion and challenges presented within the regulatory and scientific communities regarding the effective implementation of this act as it relates to the determination of aggregate exposures. This pa…

Beyond proximity: how food quality in dollar and grocery stores influences health.

BACKGROUND: Rising costs of groceries have prompted some United States (US) households to change their grocery shopping habits opting for dollar stores to lower household expenses. In previous work dollar stores have not been classified as a grocery store, limiting our understanding of how the dollar store associates with public health. Importantly, healthy food offerings such as fresh produce, whole grains, and lean proteins largely differ between traditional grocery stores and dollar stores. This public health study seeks to understand how the contrast in healthy food offerings associate wit

Enhancing the Quality of Ginseng-Astragalus Medicinal Food Using Twin-Screw Extrusion.

Twin-screw extrusion is a promising method to transform medicinal herbs into functional food ingredients. However, limited research has focused on the application of this technique to ginseng-astragalus compounds. In this study, the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extrusion process (screw speed, temperature, and moisture content). The optimal parameters (208 rpm, 128 °C, 29%) significantly increased ginsenoside, polysaccharide, phenolic content, and antioxidant capacities (DPPH•, OH•, O2-•). Furthermore, extrusion improved the aroma profile while reducing bitterness

Food Insecurity Is Associated with Diet Quality in Pregnancy: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Household food insecurity (HFI) and poorer prenatal diet quality are both associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. However, research assessing the relationship between HFI and diet quality in pregnancy is limited. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted to examine the relationship between HFI and diet quality among 1540 pregnant women in Australia. Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the associations between HFI severity (marginal, low, and very low food security compared to high food security) and diet quality and variety, adjusting for age, education, equivalised

The importance of food quality, gut motility, and microbiome in SIBO development and treatment.

The prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is rising worldwide, particularly in nations with high rates of urbanization. Irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel illnesses, and nonspecific dysmotility are strongly linked to SIBO. Moreover, repeated antibiotic therapy promotes microorganisms' overgrowth through the development of antibiotic resistance. The primary cause of excessive fermentation in the small intestine is a malfunctioning gastrointestinal motor complex, which results in the gut's longer retention of food residues. There are anatomical and physiological fa

The concept of using bacteriophages to improve the microbiological quality of minimally processed foods.

Phages were discovered relatively recently – at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The idea of using bacteriophages for therapeutic purposes was promoted by d’Herelle, who conducted the first successful experiments with prokaryotic viruses. Works of contemporary scientists on phage therapy were, however, halted due to the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928. Today, when many bacterial strains have developed resistance to common antibiotics offered by the pharmaceutical industry and when new, so far unknown, bacterial strains have appeared, the concept of usin

Nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy: Effects on food intake and diet quality.

Experiences of nausea and/or vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) vary greatly, but the paucity of studies with pre-pregnancy dietary data mean that little is known about the effects of NVP on diet. Using an administered food frequency questionnaire, diet was assessed before pregnancy and at 11 and 34 weeks' gestation in 2270 participants in a UK birth cohort study (Southampton Women's Survey). Experience of NVP in early pregnancy was graded as none, mild, moderate, or severe. Participants reported their level of food consumption as more, the same, or less than before pregnancy. "Prudent" diet scores (

Quality of life, food choice and meal patterns - field report of a practitioner.

Quality of life is defined as the result of combining personal resources, control of the environment, personal values, and actual living conditions. Balanced nutrition is an important condition for quality of life, health and well-being. During the course of life everyone develops his very individual biography of eating. This includes eating habits, food choice, and meal patterns. The process of aging is accompanied by hardly recognizable physiological, emotional, social, and environmental changes. Ignoring these changes can lead to malnutrition and nutrition-related problems and thus reduce h

QUALITY OF PROTEIN IN DIFFERENT FOOD SOURCES IN THE CONTEXT OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE.

Plant-based diets have gained increasing attention in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet concerns persist regarding the quality of plant-derived proteins. Traditionally, animal-based proteins have been regarded as high biological value proteins, while plant proteins have been labeled as low biological value, contributing to misconceptions about their nutritional adequacy. In this narrative review, we challenge these assumptions by presenting emerging evidence on the nutritional quality of plant proteins, strategies to enhance their amino acid profiles, and their relevance in t
