AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate foot deformities in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), to detect frequency of deformities and to assess the relationship between foot deformities and foot functions.
METHODS: Anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of 40 patients and 40 control subjects were studied. The hallux valgus (HV) angle, intermetatarsal angle between first and second metatarsals, intermetatarsal angle between first and fifth metatarsals, and calcaneal pitch were measured on radiographs. Foot functions were measured by the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS).

BACKGROUND: The current classification system of progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) is comprised of 5 possible classes. PCFD is understood to be a complex, three-dimensional deformity occurring in many regions along the foot and ankle. The question remains whether a deformity in one area impacts other areas. The objective of this study is to assess how each one of the classes is influenced by other classes by evaluating each associated angular measurement. We hypothesized that positive and linear correlations would occur for each class with at least one other class and that this infl

Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease caused by a neurotrophic virus targeting anterior horn cells of lower motor neurons resulting in flaccid paralysis and represents a common condition in developing countries, and even nowadays, most of both treated and untreated cases result in foot deformities. Between 1994 and 2007, 27 patients were treated by classic ring Ilizarov fixator, aiming at producing a stable plantigrade and cosmetically acceptable foot and followed up for meanly 7.17 years. Additional procedures were performed if needed. The mean time in frame was 4.2 months. All the patients …

A clinical survey on foot deformities among 166 geriatric inpatients was carried out. Direct measurements on hallux valgus, great toe movements, great toe deformities, lesser toe deformities, arch of the foot, callosities, ankle movements, inversion, and eversion were done by using the goniometer. A specially designed goniometer was created to measure inversion and eversion. The Harris Mat was used to study foot prints in correlation with the various deformities. About 50% of geriatric patients were found to have foot deformities of various types. This compared well with available data in lite…

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is one of the most common congenital joint contracture syndromes. Talectomy has been proposed for severe foot deformities in AMC, but the literature is limited. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate the indications, outcomes and complications of talectomy in arthrogrypotic foot deformities.
METHODS: The articles were found through Embase and Medline. Screening was conducted by two independent investigators with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Relevant data regarding demographics, outcomes and complications were co…

Abnormalities of foot alignment can be a cause of significant morbidity in children, and some require complex surgical intervention to improve functionality and decrease pain. Imaging plays a key role in management decisions. We address some of the most common surgical strategies for selected diagnoses including pes planus, congenital vertical talus, pes cavus, and clubfoot, with a focus on imaging findings.

Hand and foot deformities, known as "striatal deformities", and other musculoskeletal abnormalities such as dropped head, bent spine, camptocormia, scoliosis and Pisa syndrome, are poorly understood and often misdiagnosed features of Parkinson's disease and other parkinsonian syndromes. These deformities share some similarities with known rheumatologic conditions and can be wrongly diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, or other rheumatologic or orthopedic conditions. Neurologists, rheumatologists, and other physicians m…

Deformities of the feet are common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated whether there was any correlation among forefoot deformities, flat foot or articular destruction of the midfoot and hindfoot, in 146 feet of 73 RA patients whose age varied from 26 to 81 years (mean 58.5 years). In all patients, anteroposterior (AP) and lateral radiographs of the feet with weight bearing were obtained. The hallux valgus angle (HVA), the intermetatarsal angle between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals (M 1 M 2), and the intermetatarsal angle between the 1st and 5th metatarsals (M 1 M 5) were…

As with deformities of the forefoot, deformities of the rearfoot often respond well to conservative therapy. Rest and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are often used. Patients with plantar fasciitis may benefit from corticosteroid injections. Surgery may be helpful in refractory cases. Haglund's deformity is associated with pain in the area of the osseous ridge on the posterosuperior aspect of the calcaneus. The retrocalcaneal bursa may be inflamed. This disorder is diagnosed by palpation of the painful area. Conservative treatment consists of minimizing pressure over the osseous rid

In a consecutive screening of 2,401 newborn, a foot deformity was noted in 100 of the infants (4.2 percent). At follow-up 5-6 years later, the children with a foot deformity were reexamined and compared with normal controls. Seventy-six infants had some adduction deformity of the foot at birth. At reexamination, 87 percent of the examined children had normal feet. No association was observed between sleeping prone and the presence of adduction deformity at the reexamination. Pes calcaneovalgus was diagnosed in 18 newborn. Of those reexamined, all had normal feet. Up to the age of 6 years, 4.3

When 51 patients with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita followed an average of 12 years were reviewed, talipes equinovarus was the most common foot and ankle deformity. The best results were obtained by talectomy. The majority of tendo Achillis lengthenings, posteromedial releases, and triple arthrodeses were unsuccessful and were associated with a high complication rate. Congenital convex pes valgus was the second most common deformity. Surgical treatment by open reduction generally resulted in unsuccessful outcomes. Ambulation was achieved in 46 patients. Residual foot deformity was the pri

We report six cases of foot deformities in children due to sciatic nerve dysfunction that appear to have been caused by gluteal intramuscular injection. Of four patients who developed cavovarus foot deformities, two also exhibited a component of ankle equinus. A fifth patient had a calcaneocavus foot deformity. In the sixth patient foot palsy resolved completely 1 year after injury, and no deformities developed. Identification of the muscle imbalance, as well as appropriate correction of the deformity before the implementation of muscle balancing procedures, led to the attainment of a satisfac…

Spastic equinovarus foot deformities secondary to anoxic brain injuries or traumatic brain injury pose a challenging situation for orthopaedic surgeons because of associated cognitive impairment, spastic tone, and extensive soft-tissue contractures prohibiting bracing treatment. Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) is a systemic disease that causes fractures, dislocations, and deformities involving the foot and ankle, resulting in substantial risk of ulceration, infection, and function loss. Early recognition and prevention of collapsing foot and ankle are still the best options for the management of patients with diabetic CN. For a successful arthrodesis procedure, the principles of adequate joint preparation, deformity correction, and soft tissue protection and care are essentials, associated with robust fixation (internal and/or external), use of different biological graf

This study describes the management of foot deformity in children. Severe congenital clubfeet treated using posteromedial release without talocalcaneal joint release were flexible and functional. Talectomy may be necessary for congenital clubfeet with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. The diagnosis and severity of vertical talus were defined based on stress radiographs. For the deformity with spina bifida, a combination of talocalcaneal joint fusion and precise correction by soft tissue release and tendon transfer was performed. This combined surgery is effective, particularly in patients wi
