Spontaneous Bilateral Femoral Fractures After High-Dose Zoledronic Acid.

The authors report a case of spontaneous bilateral diaphyseal femoral fractures believed to be caused by oversuppression of bone remodeling as a result of long-term, high-dose treatment with bisphosphonate. The patient reported pain in both thighs before the fractures. Typical pathologic changes appeared on both femoral radiograph and bone scan before the fractures. Several hours after admission to the emergency department of the authors' institution, the patient underwent closed reduction and internal fixation with intramedullary nails for the bilateral femoral diaphyseal fractures. Treatment

Mutiple Spontaneous Rib Fractures in Patient with Cushing's Syndrome.

Glucocorticoid (GC) excess, including Cushing's syndrome, is a common cause of secondary osteoporosis. Thirty to fifty percent of Cushing's syndrome patients experience non-traumatic fractures, which is often the presenting manifestation of Cushing's syndrome. However, there have been rare cases of Cushing's syndrome diagnosed only based upon bone manifestations. We describe a case of Cushing's syndrome that was diagnosed in a 44-year-old woman who initially visited our hospital due to multiple non-traumatic rib fractures. She did not exhibit any other manifestations of Cushing's syndrome such

Spontaneous bilateral neck of femur fractures and shoulder dislocation.

Non-traumatic fractures mostly present a diagnostic dilemma. Fracture risk is less reported in non-epileptic seizures. Various metabolic conditions leading to a decrease in bone mineral density may also cause fractures. The authors report the case of non-traumatic fracture of an old woman who presented with fever, shortness of breath and right shoulder pain without any history of epilepsy. Episode of seizures was noted prior to admission. The patient had poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and severe hypoglycaemia was noted at the time of admission. She was admitted to a medical ward for a sev

Fractures of mandible: is spontaneous healing possible? Why? When?

Closed and open reduction of fractures of the mandible constitutes an endless debate, and it is interesting that modern times have not brought a conclusion to this controversy. From 1995 to 1997 in the Plastic Surgery Department of Argerich Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 23 patients were evaluated with different fractures of the mandible in which neither closed nor open reduction was performed. Seventeen patients (74%) presented associated fractures in different areas of the mandible and 6 (26%) only had one fracture; 2 of them (9%) were edentulous. Three (13%) of the 23 patients had mor

[Axis-related spontaneous correction after tibial fractures in childhood].

In the Department of Surgery at the Bergmannsheil University Hospital, a total of 50 children with measurable post-traumatic deformity of the axis after fracture of the lower limb were examined. Clinical and radiological monitoring was carried out 6 years after their accidents, which they had sustained at the age of 3-15 years. The real degree of axis deformity remaining was determined mathematically, and the correction tendency was analysed in three dimensions and projected graphically using sum vectors. This showed better results in the correction of axis deformations of the lower limb visua

Spontaneous subcapital femoral neck fracture complicating a healed intertrochanteric fracture.

A spontaneous subcapital femoral neck fracture is an uncommon complication of a healed intertrochanteric hip fracture. To determine the etiology of this complication, 274 patients who had been treated for intertrochanteric hip fractures were followed up over an 8-year period from June 1988 to June 1996. We found 7 fractures of the subcapital femoral neck without a history of a trauma. The remaining 267 patients were defined as the control group. All seven patients with fractures of the subcapital femoral neck were women, and their average age at the time of compression hip screw (CHS) fixation

Spontaneous intrauterine linear skull fracture: a rare complication of spontaneous vaginal delivery.

BACKGROUND: Fetal skull fracture has been reported in conjunction with difficult delivery or extrinsic trauma. CASE: We report a case of linear, undisplaced, nondepressed skull fracture occurring in a 3540-g male infant born at 37 weeks and 4 days' gestation. Linear skull fracture occurred despite an uncomplicated spontaneous vaginal delivery in the absence of extrinsic trauma or cephalopelvic disproportion. Subsequent clinical follow-up 6 years later revealed normal neurological development without evidence of epileptiform activity or focal neurologic deficit. CONCLUSION: Linear skull fract

A Rare Case of Spontaneous Intrauterine Skull Fracture.

Skull fractures are rare in newborns and normally caused by maternal abdominal trauma or complicated deliveries. However, in rare cases, these fractures are found in neonates born after an uneventful pregnancy and delivery. We report a case of a primigravida who underwent cesarean delivery due to failure of descent and malpositioning of the fetal head. After birth, a right temporoparietal fracture and congenital muscular torticollis were diagnosed. The newborn's blood tests showed hypocalcemia and relative hypoparathyroidism. Both mother and newborn presented low vitamin D levels. Serial imagi

Spontaneously reduced isolated orbital roof fracture.

We report a case of a spontaneously reduced isolated orbital roof blow-in fracture with resolution of associated diplopia and blepharoptosis highlighting the need for a low threshold for reimaging this cohort of facial fracture patients.
