Frontal Sinus Morphology: A Reliable Factor for Classification of Frontal Bone Fractures?

PURPOSE: The frontal sinus shows a wide range of morphologic variations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of frontal sinus size on fracture characteristics in frontal bone trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data from patients with traumatic fractures of the frontal bone were retrospectively collected from the institution's database. Radiometric analysis of computed tomography and cone-beam computed tomography datasets was performed. Frontal sinus size was measured as variables of height, width, and depth. The secondary predictor was morphologic si…

Intraosseous venous malformation of the frontal bone with extension into the frontal sinus and orbit.

We present a novel case of intraosseous venous malformation of the frontal bone with dehiscence of the inner table of the frontal calvarium and extension into the frontal sinus and orbit. This case report discusses the surgical management of this intraosseous lesion achieved with a multidisciplinary approach involving otolaryngology and neurosurgical teams. We also present a review of the literature of the pathophysiology of venous malformations, the imaging modalities that aid in diagnosis of these lesions and the management options.

[Squamous cell carcinoma of the frontal sinus caused osteomyelitis of the frontal bone].

A case of the squamous cell carcinoma of the frontal sinus complicated with osteomyelitis of the frontal bone was reported. A 47-year-old male was admitted to Asahikawa Medical College Hospital because of a bulging of forehead and remittent fever of a six-month history and general convulsive seizures on the day before admission. On physical examination, a bulging of forehead with redness, tenderness and fluctuation was noted. Sense of smell diminished bilaterally. Oto-laryngological examination disclosed paranasal sinusitis. Skull X-P and CT scan suggested osteomyelitis of the frontal bone sec…

Frontal bone reconstruction with split calvarial and cancellous iliac bone.

An autogenous split-thickness calvarial bone graft that was used to correct a marked depression in the frontal region of the forehead resulted in excellent cosmesis. Cancellous bone from the iliac crest, which was applied between the posterior wall of the frontal sinus and the anterior calvarial bone graft, eliminated the dead space and made infection less likely in an area prone to such infections.

A Case of Telangiectatic Osteosarcoma in the Frontal Bone.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TOS) is a subtype of osteosarcoma. TOS in the elderly and TOS in the skull are very rare. Here, we report a case of TOS in the frontal bone of an elderly patient. The patient was a 79-year-old woman who was identified as having a right frontal bone lesion. The patient was initially diagnosed with an intradiploic epidermoid cyst (IEC). A 60mm cystic lesion with bone destruction appeared 5 years later, which enlarged over 2 months. The fluid in the cyst seemed to be blood that had lost its clotting ability. Tumor and the surrounding tissue were resected. The postoper…

The tolerance of the frontal bone to blunt impact.

The current understanding of the tolerance of the frontal bone to blunt impact is limited. Previous studies have utilized vastly different methods, which limits the use of statistical analyses to determine the tolerance of the frontal bone. The purpose of this study is to determine the tolerance of the frontal bone to blunt impact. Acoustic emission sensors were used to provide a noncensored measure of the frontal bone tolerance and were essential due to the increase in impactor force after fracture onset. In this study, risk functions for fracture were developed using parametric and nonparame…

Injury to the orbital plate of the frontal bone.

Twelve cases of fracture of the orbital plate of the frontal bone are reviewed to clarify this important clinical problem and to suggest satisfactory methods of management. Common signs and symptoms include forehead laceration and deformity, and fracture of the frontal sinus. Loss of vision can occur, and in the seeing eye, diplopia can develop in several fields of gaze. Downward or upward projection of the orbital plate of the frontal bone can cause exophthalmos or enophthalmos. Cerebrospinal fluid leak, with or without meningitis, and seizures can also be part of the syndrome. Effective trea…

Foramen on Frontal Process of Zygomatic Bone.

Foramina in the orbit are well described in the literature. But the author of the present study observed an unusual foramen in the frontal process of the zygomatic bone, not reported so far, as far as the author knows. This foramen was observed in 2 skulls, in one skull bilaterally and in another skull unilaterally on the left side. The foramen was located on the frontal process bilaterally in one skull and on the left frontal process of another skull. On the right side of the first skull, this foramen was 1 cm inferior to the fronto-zygomatic suture, and on the left side of the same skull, th

Ectopic recurrent craniopharyngioma of the frontal bone.

Ectopic recurrence of craniopharyngioma is a rare phenomenon after transcranial resection of the primary tumor. The authors present a case of ectopic recurrent adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma of the frontal bone resected 16 years after initial transcranial resection of the primary tumor. The lesion was first radiographically described 12 years after surgery and was adjacent to the osteosynthesis plate that had been implanted at the craniotomy site. The recurrent craniopharyngioma was totally resected via a lateral eyebrow approach. No infiltration of the meninges or the brain was detected. …

Intraosseous cavernous hemangioma of the frontal bone.

A 32-year-old man presented with a primary intraosseous cavernous hemangioma manifesting as a small painless swelling of the right forehead. Radiography revealed a radiolucent osteolytic lesion in the right frontal region. Bone window computed tomography demonstrated a 1.5 cm mass between the outer and inner tables just lateral to the right frontal sinus. The outer and inner tables were thin and partially defective, but without bone fracture. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a small mass lesion with bone erosion of the posterior table of the frontal bone. Preoperative examination yielded no…

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the frontal sinus.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign, vascular, cystic osseous tumors. Approximately 2% of all aneurysmal bone cysts are found in the head and neck region, with the most common site being the mandible. We report a case of an aneurysmal bone cyst arising from the frontal sinus in a pediatric patient. The diagnosis was suggested through various radiographic studies, with the final pathologic diagnosis confirmed after tumor excision. Complete en-bloc excision was performed by using a bifrontal craniotomy approach, with immediate reconstruction of the defect by using a split calvarial bone graft.

Extradural epidermoid tumor of the frontal bone.

The radiologic findings in a case of an extradural diploic epidermoid tumor (ET) of the frontal bone, examined with plain X rays, CT and MRI, are reported. A head injury with traumatic inclusion of epidermis could have been the origin of the tumor. This report stresses the importance of the plain skull X ray in the diagnosis of extradural ET.
