Gender equity in ergonomics: does muscle effort in laparoscopic surgery differ between men and women?

BACKGROUND: Women surgeons may experience more ergonomic challenges while performing surgery. We aimed to assess ergonomics between men and women surgeons. METHODS: Laparoscopic surgeons from a single institution were enrolled. Demographics and intraoperative data were collected. Muscle groups were evaluated objectively using surface electromyography (EMG; TrignoTM, Delsys, Inc., Natick, MA), and comprised upper trapezius (UT), anterior deltoid, flexor carpi radialis (FCR), and extensor digitorum (ED). Comparisons were made between women (W) and men (M) for each muscle group, assessing maxima

Mind the Gap! Working Toward Gender Equity in Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease: Present and Future.

Evidence from medicine and other fields has shown that gender diversity results in better decision making and outcomes. The incoming workforce of congenital heart specialists (especially in pediatric cardiology) appears to be more gender balanced, but past studies have shown many inequities. Gender-associated differences in leadership positions, opportunities presented for academic advancement, and recognition for academic contributions to the field persist. In addition, compensation packages remain disparate if evaluated based on gender with equivalent experience and expertise. This review ex

Gender-transformative action as a strategy for health system strengthening: a framework for advancing equity, accountability, and resilience.

Gender inequity is embedded in the organisation, financing, leadership, and everyday practice of health systems. It shapes who receives care, who provides it, who advances into decision-making roles, whose labour is undervalued, and whose safety is treated as negotiable. While health systems are often presented as neutral institutions, they frequently reproduce the gendered hierarchies of the societies in which they operate. This viewpoint argues that gender-transformative action should be treated as a core strategy for health system strengthening rather than as a peripheral equity concern. It

Interventions to improve gender equity in eye care in low-middle income countries: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Women bear an inequitable burden of blinding conditions compared to men primarily because they have more limited access to eye care services. This systematic review sought evidence regarding interventions to increase gender equity in eye care. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, and EBSCO CINAHL, and contacted experts to identify studies in low- and middle-income countries of health services interventions for age-related cataract, childhood cataract, and trachoma. Eligible studies could be clinical trials or observational studies, but

Ripple Effects Mapping of a gender equity and social inclusion behaviour change activity in Uganda's trachoma effort.

BACKGROUND: Uganda's trachoma program has faced persistent challenges in achieving adequate preventive medicine coverage. To address these, the Ministry of Health applied Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) to assess a gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) behaviour change activity (BCA). To our knowledge, this represents one of the first documented applications of REM to a neglected tropical disease (NTD) program. METHODS: Seven REM workshops were conducted with government officials, health staff and community members. Facilitators guided participants to identify the BCA's inputs, outputs and i

Beyond the Binary: Advancing Gender-Inclusive Data Policy for Health Equity in the US National Provider Identifier System.

Achieving health equity requires data systems that recognize and reflect provider diversity. The National Provider Identifier (NPI) system underpins United States health care administration, yet its gender data standards remain outdated, conflating sex and gender and lacking inclusive options. These deficiencies undermine research, equity initiatives, and the visibility of transgender and nonbinary providers. In an era of growing political hostility to diversity, administrative neutrality is insufficient. The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System must establish itself as a model of gen

Understanding Men's Elevated Alcohol Use, Gender Equity Ideologies, and Intimate Partner Violence Among Married Couples in Rural India.

Qualitative evidence suggests that husbands' inequitable gender equity (GE) ideologies may influence associations between husbands' alcohol use and intimate partner violence (IPV) against wives. However, little quantitative research exists on the subject. To address this gap in the literature, associations of husbands' elevated alcohol use and GE ideologies with wives' reports of IPV victimization among a sample of married couples in Maharashtra, India, were examined. Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from the baseline sample of the Counseling Husbands to Achieve Reproductive

Gender equity and social inclusion in mass drug administration for neglected tropical diseases in post-conflict South Sudan.

PURPOSE: Despite the implementation of ongoing mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns, South Sudan remains endemic for six Preventive Chemotherapy Neglected Tropical Diseases (PC-NTDs); this persistent endemicity is attributed to complex sociocultural barriers and healthcare delivery challenges. Integrating gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) is essential to identify barriers to equitable MDA delivery and develop targeted, inclusive solutions. METHODS: This study includes a assessment of barriers among adults who did not receive MDA during the most recent campaign, which employed WI-H

Gender, self-care and toxic exposures: a narrative review of personal care product use and health equity implications.

BACKGROUND: Personal care products (PCPs) are widely used across populations, yet their composition includes a range of hazardous chemicals that pose risks to human health and the environment. Emerging evidence highlights how PCP-related exposures are not evenly distributed, but shaped by intersecting forces of gender, race and social inequality. Despite being framed as tools for empowerment and wellness, PCPs may contribute to disproportionate toxic exposures, particularly for women and girls. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review critically examines the environmental health implications of gende

An exploratory evaluation of a shared learning community of practice approach to improving gender equity in sports and physical activity programming.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the efficacy of a nine-month intervention that engaged twelve sport and physical activity organizations in a single U.S. county in shared learning, reflection, and problem-solving around gender equity. The Gender Equity Shared Learning Action Team (SLAT) was designed to address barriers to girls' participation in structured sport and physical activity programs through a community of practice (CoP) approach. Participating organizations completed a Gender Equity Assessment, created Gender Action Plans (GAPs), and participated in shared learning and group discussio

Women's Knees Are Not Gender-Neutral: A Global Scoping Review of Equity, Representation, and Context in Knee Osteoarthritis Research and Evidence.

Women bear a disproportionate burden of knee osteoarthritis (KOA), yet global research systematically underrepresents sex-specific and context-sensitive analyses, limiting precision care and equitable interventions. We conducted a scoping review following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, systematically mapping studies on KOA in adults from 2000 to 2024 across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. A predefined, version-controlled protocol was maintained with timestamped revisions and an independent audit to ensure methodological transparency. Dual independent screening, data extra

Gendered role assignment and musical self-efficacy in extracurricular music education: hidden curriculum pathways to inclusion and equity.

Gender-based disparities in musical role assignment and self-efficacy have been documented across educational contexts, yet the association between perceived role allocation and self-evaluative beliefs remains insufficiently specified in extracurricular music settings. Using cross-sectional survey data from 312 university students enrolled in extracurricular music classes, this study examined whether gender schema internalization (GSI) statistically accounted for part of the association between perceived role assignment (PRA) and musical self-efficacy (MSE), and whether this indirect associati

An educational intervention to promote a culture of gender equity among persons with traumatic brain injury and caregivers: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes are dependent on patients' biological sex (e.g., hormone levels) and sociocultural gender (e.g., norms, responsibilities). Informal caregivers additionally experience disruptions to identity and roles post-TBI. However, information on this topic remains largely unavailable to patients and caregivers. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a one-time educational intervention on sex and gender influences in TBI for patients and informal caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a pilot pre-test/post-test randomized co
