Imitation or exploration? Young infants' matching of adults' oral gestures.

The claim that very young infants can imitate rests largely on reports that infants match adult displays of mouth opening (MO) and tongue protrusion (TP). Recent reviews suggest that only tongue protruding is reliably matched by young infants. This study tests the proposal that infants' "imitation" of tongue protruding reflects a coincidental match between a sight that infants find interesting and a behavior by which infants express interest. In Study 1, 4-week-old infants who looked longer at a nonsocial light display also produced TPs at higher rates than infants showing less interest. In St

Co-Speech Hand Gestures Are Used to Predict Upcoming Meaning.

In face-to-face conversation, people use speech and gesture to convey meaning. Seeing gestures alongside speech facilitates comprehenders' language processing, but crucially, the mechanisms underlying this facilitation remain unclear. We investigated whether comprehenders use the semantic information in gestures, typically preceding related speech, to predict upcoming meaning. Dutch adults listened to questions asked by a virtual avatar. Questions were accompanied by an iconic gesture (e.g., typing) or meaningless control movement (e.g., arm scratch) followed by a short pause and target word (…

Wrist EMG-based Gestures Recognition for Finger and Wrist Motions.

Gesture recognition is a relatively natural humanmachine interface (HMI). Electromyography (EMG) based gesture recognition methods have been extensively investigated in upper limb prostheses as a special HMI, in which EMG sensors are mostly mounted on the proximal part of the forearm. However, for more general applications beyond upper-limb prosthetics, the wrist may be a more suitable position for more intuitive HMIs, in which independent finger movements in addition to wrist gestures can be realized. In this study, we propose to investigate the recognition performance for gestures of the ind…

Laryngeal gestures during stop production using high-speed digital images.

On acoustic and fiberscopic studies of stop consonants, voice onset time and glottal width have been shown to be greatest in heavily aspirated stops, next greater for slightly aspirated stops, and least for unaspirated stops. Integrated activity of the thyroarytenoid and posterior cricoarytenoid muscles has been reported to be involved in differentiating aspirate characteristics of the stops. However, the fine movement of mucosal edges of vocal folds during the production of stops has not been well documented. In recent years, a new method for high-speed digital recording of laryngeal dynamics

Different visual exploration of tool-related gestures in left hemisphere brain damaged patients is associated with poor gestural imitation.

According to the direct matching hypothesis, perceived movements automatically activate existing motor components through matching of the pe … exploration behavior was measured by an infrared eye-tracking system. Short videos including forty gestures (20 meaningless and 20 communicative gestures) were presented. Cumulative fixation duration was measured in different regions of interest (ROIs), namely the face, the gesturing hand, the body, and the surrounding environment. Compared to healthy sub …

Distributed embodiment of metaphorical hope in hand, head, and eyebrow gestures.

This study aimed to examine the embodied conceptualization of hope through metaphors. We asked a group of participants to discuss their hopes in a semi-structured interview. We examined the types of hand, head, and eyebrow gestures produced when they were talking about their future hopes. The obtained results showed that when participants talked about their future hopes, they mainly used forward hand gestures, rightward head gestures, and upward eyebrow gestures. Based on these results, it is suggested that various semantic components and emotional associations of hope are metaphorically embod…

The relation between gestures and stuttering in individuals with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that neurotypical individuals who stutter use fewer gestures than those who do not stutter. Presently, no research exists about the interaction of stuttering and gestures in individuals with Down syndrome. METHOD: Twenty-nine individuals with Down syndrome (7-19 years) of whom 16 stuttered and 13 spoke fluently and 20 neurotypical children (3-10 years) of whom 8 stuttered and 12 spoke fluently participated in this study. In spontaneous speech transcriptions, stuttering events and gestures were coded. RESULTS: Comparisons of gesture frequency during stuttered and fl…

The effect of static and dynamic visual gestures on stuttering inhibition.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of steady-state and dynamic visual gestures of vowels in stuttering inhibition. Eight adults who stuttered recited sentences from memory while watching video presentations of the following visual speech gestures: (a) a steady-state /u/, (b) dynamic production of /a-i-u/, (c) steady-state /u/ with an accompanying audible 1 kHz pure tone, and (d) dynamic production of /a-i-u/ with an accompanying audible 1 kHz pure tone. A 1 kHz pure tone and a no-external signal condition served as control conditions. Results revealed a significant main effect of au…

Conversational gestures in autism spectrum disorders: asynchrony but not decreased frequency.

Conversational or "co-speech" gestures play an important role in communication, facilitating turntaking, providing visuospatial information, clarifying subtleties of emphasis, and other pragmatic cues. Consistent with other pragmatic language deficits, individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are said to produce fewer conversational gestures, as specified in many diagnostic measures. Surprisingly, while research shows fewer deictic gestures in young children with ASD, there is a little empirical evidence addressing other forms of gesture. The discrepancy between clinical and empirical …

A female advantage in the imitation of gestures by preschool children.

Adult research has suggested a sex difference in the neuroanatomical organization and efficiency of the limb praxis system. The present study used a videotape analysis of movement errors to investigate whether a sex difference in limb praxis can be identified in childhood. Preschool girls (n = 33) committed fewer "praxic" errors than boys (n = 31) (i.e., errors that resemble those seen in limb apraxia) when imitating non-representational gestures and when imitating common, everyday gestures with representational content. In none of the conditions did the female advantage generalize to "nonprax…

Fuzzy dice, dream cars, and indecent gestures: correlates of driver behavior?

In 1989 the Los Angeles Times conducted a telephone survey of over 1,800 Southern California motorists. We analyzed the data to determine wh … hat less likely than others to run red lights and drive after drinking. Motorists who made indecent gestures at other drivers, and particularly those who argue with other motorists tend to be unlawful and dangerous drivers. Youth and hostility toward other motorists are two of the most significant and important correlates of bad driving.

The emotional responses to the sounds of organic affective tactile gestures.

Affective touch offers numerous benefits for touchers and touchees, including emotional regulation. However, individuals are engaging in affective touch increasingly less, in part due to the digitalization of experiences, which motivates the question of whether the emotional benefits of affective touch can be conveyed in alternative ways, such as through different sensory modalities. With this in mind, we investigated the emotional responses to the auditory signals produced by organic affective touch gestures. In particular, participants in our five online experiments evaluated different sound…

The Use of Hand Gestures (Hastas) in Bharatanatyam for Creative Aging.

Bharatanatyam is a traditional Indian dance form that involves the use of facial expressions and body movements to tell stories. A key aspect of Bharatanatyam is the use of hand gestures, also known as hastas, which are used to communicate with specificity and precision. Hastas are symbols, and along with facial expressions and body movements that are contextually relevant, they help to communicate narratives. I am a neuroscientist and have been immersed in Bharatanatyam for 25 years; true to the tradition of the form that emphasizes lifelong scholarship and immersion, I continue to learn from…

Immersive Robot Teleoperation Based on User Gestures in Mixed Reality Space.

Recently, research has been conducted on mixed reality (MR), which provides immersive visualization and interaction experiences, and on mapping human motions directly onto a robot in a mixed reality (MR) space to achieve a high level of immersion. However, even though the robot is mapped onto the MR space, their surrounding environment is often not mapped sufficiently; this makes it difficult to comfortably perform tasks that require precise manipulation of the objects that are difficult to see from the human perspective. Therefore, we propose a system that allows users to operate a robot in r

Interaction between articulatory gestures and inner speech in a counting task.

Interaction between covert and overt orofacial gestures has been poorly studied apart from old and rather qualitative experiments. The question deserves special interest in the context of the debate between auditory and motor theories of speech perception, where dual tasks may be of great interest. It is shown here that dynamic mandible and lips movement produced by a participant result in strong and stable perturbations to an inner speech counting task that has to be realized at the same time, while static orofacial configurations and static or dynamic manual actions produce no perturbation. …

The meaning of meaningless gestures: a study of visuo-imitative apraxia.

In two patients with damage to the inferior portion of the left angular gyrus severely defective imitation of meaningless gestures contrasted with preserved performance of meaningful gestures to verbal command and with preserved imitation of meaningful gestures. In one patient the imitation deficit was restricted to the imitation of hand positions while imitation of finger configurations was normal. In both patients replication of the hand positions on a mannikin was as defective as imitation on themselves. This pattern of preserved and impaired performances is incompatible with two-stage mode…

End-to-End Ultrasonic Hand Gesture Recognition.

As the number of electronic gadgets in our daily lives is increasing and most of them require some kind of human interaction, this demands innovative, convenient input methods. There are limitations to state-of-the-art (SotA) ultrasound-based hand gesture recognition (HGR) systems in terms of robustness and accuracy. This research presents a novel machine learning (ML)-based end-to-end solution for hand gesture recognition with low-cost micro-electromechanical (MEMS) system ultrasonic transducers. In contrast to prior methods, our ML model processes the raw echo samples directly instead of usi

Gesture, communication, and adult acquired hearing loss.

Nonverbal communication, specifically hand and arm movements (commonly known as gesture), has long been recognized and explored as a significant element in human interaction as well as potential compensatory behavior for individuals with communication difficulties. The use of gesture as a compensatory communication method in expressive and receptive human communication disorders has been the subject of much investigation. Yet within the context of adult acquired hearing loss, gesture has received limited research attention and much remains unknown about patterns of nonverbal behaviors in conve

Spatiotemporal dynamics of early cortical gesture processing.

Gesture processing has been consistently shown to be associated with activation of the inferior parietal lobe (IPL); however, little is known about the integration of IPL activation into the temporal dynamics of early sensory areas. Using a temporally graded repetition suppression paradigm, we examined the activation and time course of brain areas involved in hand gesture processing. We recorded event-related potentials in response to stimulus pairs of static hand images forming gestures of the popular rock-paper-scissors game and estimated their neuronal generators. We identified two main com…
