Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by several motor and phonic tics. Tics usually develop before 10 years of age, exhibit a waxing and waning course and typically improve with increasing age. A prevalence of approximately 1% is estimated in children and adolescents. The condition can result in considerable social stigma and poor quality of life, especially when tics are severe (for example, with coprolalia (swearing tics) and self-injurious behaviours) or when GTS is accompanied by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a childhood onset neurological disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. It may be associated with a number of co-morbidities including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive symptomatology, and behaviour disorders. Prevalence of TS is higher than previously thought, and may be present in up to 2% of the population. Tourette's syndrome has a significant genetic component. Inheritance may involve several mechanisms including autosomal dominant, bilinear, or polygenic mechanisms. Pathophysiology is still unknown, although is thought to in

The Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric condition characterized by waxing and waning tics, both vocal and motor, over a lifelong course with an onset under the age of 21 years. Once considered a rare curiosity, its prevalence is now agreed to be around 5/10,000, and is seen worldwide. Many cases are mild and never require medical attention. It is now thought to have a genetic basis, but linkage has not yet been achieved, owing possibly to the inadequacy of a single-gene hypothesis. There is a strong association with obsessive compulsive disorder, and some postulate that many o

[Gilles de la Tourette syndrome].

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome has its onset in childhood and is characterized by chronic motor and vocal tics and also complex tics. It is a lifelong illness with shorter and longer fluctuations in its severity. During puberty an aggravation in number and severity of tics is often observed, while symptoms in the third decade are reported to fade to some extent. The syndrome is found among all social classes, the male to female ratio is three to one, and it is probably inherited as an autosomal single dominant gene with varying penetrance. Gilles de la Tourette syndrome was earlier thought to
