Oral candidiasis (OC) is a frequent oral manifestation of HIV infection, is a marker disease and occurs as a pseudomembranous, erythematous or rarely hyperplastic variant; angular cheilitis is also seen. Candida albicans is frequently isolated but other species such as C. krusei and C. dublienensis are emerging. Resistance against fluconazole is common. Bacterial oral infections are comparatively rare and are predominantly localized to the gingiva and periodontium. Linear gingival erythema, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis have been described in HIV-in

Plasminogen deficiency is a rare congenital condition that leads to pseudomembraneous lesions, such as ligneous conjunctivitis and ligneous gingivitis. Because of its rarity, ligneous gingivitis is not a pathology one may easily suspect from its clinical symptoms. We report the case of a 35-year-old Caucasian woman who experienced gum masses with white spots, but no pain. Based on the clinical picture, one could refute a diagnosis of necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis. Several biopsies were taken. The last ones showed an amorphous eosinophilic substance that could be fibrin. Plasmatic dosage

The term periodontal disease refers to all diseases that involve the supportive structures of the periodontium. Peridontal diseases commonly begin as a gingivitis and progress to periodontitis. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is the most fulminate form of gingivitis. The two main forms of periodontitis are chronic periodontitis (also known as adult periodontitis) and aggressive periodontitis (also known as early onset periodontitis, destructive periodontitis, and juvenile periodontitis). Gingivitis treatment involves removing dental plaques and maintaining good oral hygiene. Periodonti

The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has decreased the incidence and prevalence of several oral manifestations such as oral candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia, and Kaposi's sarcoma in HIV-infected patients. Regarding periodontal disease the findings are not clear. This disease represents a group of chronic oral diseases characterized by infection and inflammation of the periodontal tissues. These tissues surround the teeth and provide periodontal protection (the gingival tissue) and periodontal support (periodontal ligament, root cementum, alveolar bone). Clinical, immu

Many studies indicate a strong association of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans with localized juvenile periodontitis. Species associated with adult periodontitis include Bacteroides forsythus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, A. actinomycetemcomitans, and Wolinella recta. Capnocytophaga species may be important in pubertal gingivitis. An unnamed spirochete related to Treponema pallidum has been identified in acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis lesions. Species isolated from prepubertal periodontitis, peri-implantitis, pericoronitis, and human immunodeficiency virus ging

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has profoundly affected the clinical practice of dentistry since the early 1980s. Acute lesions such as linear gingival erythema (LGE) and necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP) were described as HIV-related oral lesions. The behaviour of chronic gingivitis and periodontitis as well as other practice-related issues are discussed in this paper.

A complex manifestation of characteristic oral lesions occurring simultaneously in an HIV-seropositive patient is presented. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG), necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP), oral-facial herpes infection, pseudomembranous candidiasis and atypical oral ulceration are discussed. In spite of extremely low CD4+ T-cell counts of 3 x 10(6)/L and lack of anti-retroviral therapy, an AIDS patient responded favourably to standard periodontal therapy. In the follow-up period of 3 months, no recurrence of any of the oral lesions initially present occurred and no special

Necrotizing gingivitis (NG) or necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is considered to be an acute opportunistic gingival infection caused by bacterial plaque. It appears more frequently in undernurished children and young adults as well as patients with immunodeficiency. In its pathogenesis, there are factors related to the oral microbiota with invasion processes on the one hand, and on the other hand, factors associated with the host, such as signs of capillary and immunological disorders as well as undernurishment. The disease is characterized by pain, bleeding and papillary necrosis with

Decorative crowns for the teeth have gained a resurgence of popularity among adolescents. Similar to other forms of body art found in the mouth, these trendy crowns may be associated with a variety of oral complications. This case report describes a localized form of necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, exacerbated by a cosmetic gold crown in a teenage girl. Healthier artistic options are discussed to replace this flashy dental fad.

Periodontal diseases are a group of infectious diseases that mainly include gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most prevalent form of periodontal disease in subjects of all ages, including children and adolescents. Less frequent types of periodontal disease include aggressive periodontitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and various diseases of herpesviral and fungal origin. This review aimed to retrieve relevant information from Latin America on the prevalence of periodontal diseases among children and adolescents of the region. Gingivitis was detected in 35% of young La

RATIONALE: Epstein-Barr virus mucocutaneous ulcers (EBVMCUs) were officially recognized as a clinicopathologic entity in the 2017 revision of the World Health Organization classification, which often occurs in the elderly or in immunosuppressive condition presented as an isolated ulcerative lesion. EBVMCUs are defined as "shallow, sharply circumscribed, mucosal or cutaneous ulcers with underlying polymorphous infiltration." It mostly involves oral mucosa, but some appear in skin or gastrointestinal tract. Typically, patients with EBVMCUs display a slow disease progression and may even undergo
