OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between anatomic characteristics of lingual artery and midline glossectomy, for the purpose of increasing operative safety.
METHODS: (1) 16 extraoral dissections of the submandibular region were performed on 8 human cadavers and to observe the origin and distribution of lingual artery. (3) The lingual artery was divided into three segments, and the length and adjacent organs were observed and measured.

UNLABELLED: Total glossectomy (with or without total laryngectomy) followed by postoperative radiotherapy remains the principal treatment method for advanced base of tongue carcinoma. The procedure remains controversial owing to poor cure rates and the inevitable functional deficits associated with it. However, even though total glossectomy is a major surgical procedure that impacts on speech, deglutition and quality of life, it may offer patients the best chance of cure in many centres, especially in the developing world.

Rehabilitation of the glossectomy patient is one of the most difficult and challenging problems for the prosthodontist and speech pathologist. The tongue plays an important role in articulation, control of secretions, formation of a bolus, propulsion of the bolus toward the pharynx, clearing the palate, and initiation of the swallow reflex. This paper presents speech and prosthodontic considerations for a patient who underwent a glossectomy and had the additional problem of reduced oral opening.
