Comparison of endoscopic glottis-dilating operations.

Endoscopic glottis-dilating operations were first utilized in 1948 by Thornell, who performed an endolaryngeal arytenoidectomy. The real breakthrough in these operations was reported by Kleinsasser in 1968. There have been many modifications of the endoscopic glottis dilating operations by other authors over the past 30 years or more. These methods have brought great progress in relieving airway obstruction. However, some disadvantages have reduced the effectiveness of these operations. This study will compare the advantages and disadvantages of the previous methods and compare them to the met…

[Vanishing glottis cyst following difficult intubation].

A 68-year-old male patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. Following anesthesia induction and muscle relaxation, laryngoscopy using Macintosh laryngoscope found a tumor of thumb size above the glottis completely obscuring the vocal cords. There appeared to be a possibility of tumor impaction into the glottis leading to total obstruction when the tumor was pushed down by a tracheal tube. Consent was obtained for emergency tracheostomy if necessary. The glottis and its surrounding were thoroughly observed using a fiberscope via the Fastrach laryngeal mask. The tu…

Glottis constriction response in healthy subjects.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the glottis constriction response induced by a sudden and involuntary increase in gastric and oesophageal pressures by Tll-Ll intervertebral magnetic stimulation of the abdominal muscle roots in nine healthy subjects. Twitch flow, twitch gastric, and oesophageal pressures were measured after abdominal muscle root stimulation, which allowed pharyngo-laryngeal muscle activation to be characterized. Pharyngeal endoscopies were performed on five subjects to assess vocal cord movements. All stimulations induced positive gastric and oesophageal pressures and…

Acquisition of the feature [+spread glottis] in Icelandic.

The feature [+spread glottis] ([+s.g.]) denotes that a speech sound is produced with a wide glottal aperture with audible voiceless airflow. Icelandic is unusual in the degree to which [+spread glottis] is involved in the phonology: in /h/, pre-aspirated and post-aspirated stops, voiceless fricatives and voiceless sonorants. The ubiquitousness of the feature could potentially affect the rate and process of its acquisition. This paper investigates the development of [+s.g.] in Icelandic, both in general and in a range of contexts, in a cross-sectional study of 433 typically developing Icelandic…

The posterior glottis: structural and clinical considerations.

Despite the presence of a number of good publications during the past two decades, the posterior glottis (PG) is still not clearly appreciated in clinical laryngological practice. This study focuses on searching the literature to find out the present day awareness of the PG, as well as highlighting some of its clinical features. The investigation proceeds with two main sections: (1) critical analysis of the literature on the PG during the last 50 years (2) describing the clinical appearance and behavior of the PG in 100 normal subjects. Results of section 1 illustrate the limited awareness in …

Glottis and subglottis: a thoracic surgeon's perspective.

Anatomically, the larynx presents several unique features that account for the difficulties in the surgical management of pathologies, such as benign strictures located in the area. These features include its unique cartilaginous support, its short length, its intrinsic and extrinsic musculatures, and its innervation, all of which are fundamental for the function of breathing, phonation, and swallowing. It is important that the thoracic surgeon operating on the larynx understand this particular anatomy, the limits of surgery, and most importantly the steps to be taken to avoid catastrophic com

[Anatomy of the glottis and subglottis in the pediatric larynx].

BACKGROUND: The morphological development of the human larynx during the first years of life has previously not been studied in detail and h … ns was accomplished using a high resolution, computer-based image analyzer. The total length of the glottis, length of the cartilaginous and ligamentous glottis, subglottic cartilaginous cross-section, subglottic airway and tracheal airway were determined for each specimen. RESULTS: The subglottic airway increases considerably in size during the first 2 …

[Granular cell tumor localized in the glottis].

Granular cell tumor is an unusual tumor of probably neuroectodermal histogenesis, originally reported by Abrikossoff (1926) as a myoblastoma. Of the about 1,200 reported cases since then, 50% are found in the head and neck. Of these, 10% have a laryngeal localization. An infrequent case report of glottic localization which was solved by chirurgical excision with free margins, is presented. The features of the laryngeal presentation, is reviewed and iconography with immunohistochemical techniques of their pathologic characteristics, is showed.

[Radiotherapy of carcinoma of the glottis in the initial stage].

The control of early glottic cancer is equally satisfactory with either surgical resection or radiation therapy; this last method gives the patient good functional results. During the period from 1/1978 to 12/1985, 73 patients with early glottic carcinoma (T1 N0 M0) were treated in the Institute of Radiotherapy L. Galvani, University of Bologna; 45 were stage T1a (tumour limited to one vocal cord) and 28 were stage T1b (tumour of both vocal cords or involving anterior commissure); radiation treatment utilised a 60Co machine and 5 x 5 cm fields; the median dose was 67.2 Gy (range 50-76) with co
