Reduced activity of serum beta-glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31) was found in three patients with Marfan syndrome, two of whom were siblings. beta-glucuronidase activity, estimated cytochemically, is, in more than half cases of myeloma, very increased or decreased, compared to that found in benign dysglobulinemias, where this activity is normal. A very high or very low score makes sure the diagnostic of myeloma. The relations between the beta-glucuronidase activity and the myeloma clinical stade according to Durie and Salmon and the bone lysis are discussed.

Breast milk samples from mothers of breast-fed, healthy, term newborns with unexplained prolonged jaundice were analyzed for beta-glucuronidase activity. This study reports a case of type VII mucopolysaccharidosis (beta-glucuronidase deficiency) presenting as lethal hydrops fetalis. Skin fibroblast cultures established postmortem revealed deficient beta-glucuronidase activity. Mucopolysaccharides were stored in various cells of the brain, heart, kidney, liver, and spleen. The stages of maturation of the bones, kidneys, and brain were discrepant, the brain being the least mature organ. A delay in central nervous system maturation may account for psychomotor retardation in some patients with this enzyme deficiency.

DESIGN: 16S rRNA sequencing of stool samples from women with (n = 35) or without (n = 30) endometriosis and from a mouse model was conducted to assess gut microbiome changes and identify molecular factors influencing the development of endometriosis. High concentrations of mannose-containing compounds inhibited uptake into macrophages but had no effect on uptake into fibroblasts.
