[Frequent growth disorders in puberty and adolescence].

About 50% of our patients with concern about their actual or final height are adolescents (girls greater than 11 years, boys greater than 13 years). Growth data of 103 adolescent patients (70 boys, 33 girls) seen in 1988/89 are analysed. 85% of the patients (90% of the boys) complained of short stature (length less than 3rd centile) whereas tall stature (height greater than 97th centile) was more frequently concerning girls (9 out of 16 patients). Genetic short stature and constitutional delay of growth and adolescence (CDGA) were most often diagnosed in short stature patients. When retardatio

The phakomatoses as paracrine growth disorders (paracinopathies).

A microcomputer database management system retrieved all 170 probands with phakomatoses evaluated through the genetic clinics at the University of South Florida between January 2, 1982 and December 31, 1987. Neurofibromatosis (NF) was the diagnosis of 118 of them; 42 had other phakomatoses and 10 had transitional phenotypes difficult to classify. The analysis of the hamartomas of all probands indicated disorganized differentiation and overgrowth of cell species characteristic for the involved tissue and location. Abundance of extracellular fibrillary components was also evident in most hamarto

Fetal growth patterns in pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorders: NICHD Fetal Growth Studies.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth patterns in pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorders is poorly understood because prospective longitudinal data are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to compare longitudinal fetal growth trajectories between normotensive women and those with pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorders. STUDY DESIGN: This is a study based on data from a prospective longitudinal cohort study of fetal growth performed at 12 US sites (2009-2013). Project gestational age was confirmed by ultrasound between 8 weeks 0 days and 13 weels 6 days, and up to 6 ultrasounds wer

Role of the natriuretic peptide system in normal growth and growth disorders.

The C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and its receptor (NPR-B) are recognized as important regulators of longitudinal growth. Animal models i … uate a CNP analog treatment for achondroplasia. Pediatricians and endocrinologists must be aware of growth disorders related to natriuretic peptides, although there is still much to be learned about its diagnostic and therapeutic use.

[Normal growth and disorders of growth in children and adolescents (author's transl)].

Normal growth and its variability are discussed on the basis of the new Zürich standard percentile charts. In the perinatal period boys grow faster than girls, presumably because of higher concentration of plasma testosterone. At the age of 6-7 years there is a modest midgrowth spurt, presumably caused by the increasing secretion of adrenal androgens (adrenarche). Just before puberty growth velocity reaches its lowest point. This is followed by the pubertal growth spurt with its peak at a mean age of 12 years in girls and 14 years in boys. This growth spurt is more marked in boys and is caused

Growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 secretions in eating disorders: Correlations with psychopathological aspects of the disorders.

Hormonal alterations in Eating Disorders (ED) may result from the biochemical stress of malnutrition/starvation. The correlations between some hormonal impairments, particularly of the somatotropic axis, and the psychopathological aspects of ED are still undefined. We measured the plasma concentrations of the somatotropic hormone (GH) and the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in 136 patients with various forms of ED, 65 with restricted Anorexia Nervosa (ANR), 19 with bingeing-purging Anorexia Nervosa (ANBP), 12 with purging-non binging Anorexia Nervosa (ANP), 26 with Bulimia Nervosa (BN), 8

Understanding craniosynostosis as a growth disorder.

Craniosynostosis is a condition of complex etiology that always involves the premature fusion of one or multiple cranial sutures and includes various anomalies of the soft and hard tissues of the head. Steady progress in the field has resulted in identifying gene mutations that recurrently cause craniosynostosis. There are now scores of mutations on many genes causally related to craniosynostosis syndromes, though the genetic basis for the majority of nonsyndromic cases is unknown. Identification of these genetic mutations has allowed significant progress in understanding the intrinsic propert

[Disorder of hair growth in hyperprolactinemia].

Functional hyperprolactinemia was found in five female patients, 25-35 years old, seeking medical consultation for hair loss, together with hypertrichosis (4x), disturbances of cyclic bleeding periods (4x), secondary amenorrhea (2x), galactorrhea (2x), seborrhea (2x) and persisting acne (1x). Other hormonal parameters including testosterone levels and thyroid gland function tests were unchanged. Prolactinoma was excluded by x-ray diagrams, partly also by computer tomograms of the sella. In two patients increased telogen effluvium was found by trichogram examination with some dystrophic hairs;

Growth of adipose tissue in infants, children and adolescents: variations in growth disorders.

In order to identify factors important in the growth of adipose tissue, four groups of children were studied. Infants of gestational diabetic mothers demonstrated increased fat cell numbers as early as age two months, a finding which accelerated with increasing age, and which was associated with persistent hyperinsulinemia and increasing obesity. Children with growth hormone deficiency increased their adipose cell number following treatment with exogenous hormone. Patients with the Prader-Willi syndrome, who developed obesity after the age of two, did so primarily via increases in fat cell siz

Skeletal disorders associated with the growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor 1 axis.

Growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) are important regulators of bone remodelling and metabolism and have an essential role in the achievement and maintenance of bone mass throughout life. Evidence from animal models and human diseases shows that both GH deficiency (GHD) and excess are associated with changes in bone remodelling and cause profound alterations in bone microstructure. The consequence is an increased risk of fractures in individuals with GHD or acromegaly, a condition of GH excess. In addition, functional perturbations of the GH-IGF1 axis, encountered in in

The growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor-I axis in the diagnosis and treatment of growth disorders.

The growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I axis is a key endocrine mechanism regulating linear growth in children. While paediatricians have a good knowledge of GH secretion and assessment, understanding and use of measurements of the components of the IGF system are less current in clinical practice. The physiological function of this axis is to increase the anabolic cellular processes of protein synthesis and mitosis, and reduction of apoptosis, with each being regulated in the appropriate target tissue. Measurement of serum IGF-I and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-3 concentrati

Axonal Growth Abnormalities Underlying Ocular Cranial Nerve Disorders.

Abnormalities in cranial motor nerve development cause paralytic strabismus syndromes, collectively referred to as congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders, in which patients cannot fully move their eyes. These disorders can arise through one of two mechanisms: (a) defective motor neuron specification, usually by loss of a transcription factor necessary for brainstem patterning, or (b) axon growth and guidance abnormalities of the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves. This review focuses on our current understanding of axon guidance mechanisms in the cranial motor nerves and how disea

Mental disorders, functional impairment, and nerve growth factor.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is an important member of the neurotrophin family and its alteration has been associated with psychiatric disorders. Functionality consists of the activities that an individual can perform, as well as their social participation, which is an important factor in analyzing the carrier living conditions of subjects with psychiatric suffering. Several studies have evaluated functionality in bipolar disorder; however, no studies have evaluated the functionality in other mental disorders. There are also few studies investigating the association between functionality and the

Disorders of childhood growth and development: precocious puberty.

Precocious puberty is defined as pubertal development that begins at an earlier age than expected; most US pediatric endocrinology subspecialists use cutoff ages of 8 years for girls and 9 years for boys. Early activation and maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis leads to hormonal changes, physical signs of puberty, and acceleration of linear growth. Factors affecting puberty include race/ethnicity, obesity, and endocrine disruptors. The 2 forms of precocious puberty are central (gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty) and peripheral (gonadotropin-independent precocious pube
