Spontaneous diabetes mellitus has been documented in a colony of guinea pigs. The contagious nature of the disease has been verified, but the nature of the infectious agent is not known. Aspirin ototoxicity has been studied on guinea pigs by shiver-audiometry and histological investigation of the cochlear duct. One dose of 350 mg/kg has provoked, after 7 h, a mean hearing loss of 18-24 dB at 0.25-8 kHz, followed by complete recovery in 3 days. Gross and microscopial morphological changes developing in female guinea-pigs after vaginal infection with HVH 2/Angelotti were studied. Fat myringoplasty is a simple office technique for repairing tympanic membrane perforations. It involves wedging a piece of fat from the ear lobule into the perforation. A search of the literature failed to reveal any controlled studies on the efficacy of this method, which may allow patients to avoid more invasive procedures. Chronic consumption of ethanol by pregnant and nonpregnant guinea pigs for 8 weeks at doses of 1.2 or 1.6 g/kg body weight twice daily affected pregnancy outcome and changed the pharmacokinetics of ethanol elimination. Ethanol treatment as compared to that of isocaloric sucrose decreased maternal weight, and decreased both the litter size and the number of liveborn offspring. Twenty-eight guinea pigs from nine episodes of subclinical scurvy had diarrhea, weight loss and dehydration. The classical signs of scurvy were not seen. Microscopically the epiphyses were attenutated and irregular. The amount of osteoid was less than normal. Many guinea pigs had acute enteritis. In some there were many hemosiderin-laden macrophages in the intestinal lamina propria. All episodes were associated with either autoclaving food without adequate supplementation or other inadequate feed management practices.
