The physiological orienting response in female adolescents with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The reflexive startle- and orienting-response have been widely studied in psychiatric disorders. Existing evidence in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is mixed, and limited to adults. The present study addressed clinical correlates of the psychophysiological orienting response in adolescents with BPD. METHODS: Female adolescents (13-19 years) with BPD (n = 30), healthy controls (HC; n = 34), and psychiatric clinical controls (CC; n = 53) participated in the trial. Orienting response was induced using acoustic startle-probes (sinus tones) while heart rate (HR) an

Understanding (and appreciating) behavioral complexity of zebrafish novel tank assays.

Zebrafish are rapidly becoming an important model organism in neurobehavioral research. The novel tank diving test is commonly used for assessing locomotor, anxiety-related and other behaviors in adult zebrafish. Assessing characteristic neophobic bottom preference, erratic movements and freezing/immobility behavior, the test represents a fast, easy-to-perform, single-trial novelty-based assay sensitive to pharmacological, genetic and environmental manipulations. Here, we critically evaluate key behavioral parameters in the novel tank test, and multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors that aff

Sensory over-responsivity and obsessive-compulsive disorder: Measuring habituation and sensitivity through self-report, physiological and behavioral indices.

Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may report Sensory Over Responsivity (SOR), but evidence for specific shared mechanism is limited. This study investigated a habituation-sensitivity mechanism in individuals with OCD (n = 30). Sensory habituation and sensitivity were compared with a neurotypical sample, divided to high (n = 30) and low (n = 30) obsessive-compulsive symptoms (HOCS and LOCS). Participants completed self-report sensory questionnaires and a physiological protocol measuring Electro Dermal Activity (EDA) while presenting aversive and neutral sounds in two conditio

Impact of high and low anxiety trait on object habituation and discrimination: evidence from selected lines of Japanese quail.

Compared to rodents, the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performances has been less studied in birds. Yet, birds are frequently exposed to stimulations that constitute a potential source of anxiety and can affect their adaptation to their living conditions. The present study was aimed at evaluating, in birds, the relationship between levels of anxiety and object habituation and discrimination with the use of Japanese quail lines divergently selected for a fear response, tonic immobility. Previous studies demonstrated that the selection programme has modified the general anxiety trai

Diagnosis and initiating treatment for peripheral system disorders: imbalance and dizziness with normal hearing.

Disorders affecting the peripheral vestibular system commonly involve the peripheral auditory system causing hearing loss. There are a number of disorders, however, that selectively involve the peripheral vestibular system causing dizziness without hearing loss. These disorders include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, recurrent vestibulopathy, familial vestibulopathy, and bilateral idiopathic vestibulopathy. This article reviews these disorders and their diagnosis and management.

Contingent negative variation--findings and perspectives in migraine.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) is a negative cerebral potential which is related to attention and arousal. CNV occurs during an experimental situation in which stimuli and responses are serially organized. Between attacks migraine patients have on average higher negative amplitudes compared to healthy controls or patients with tension-type headache. Successful treatment with beta-blocking agents decreases CNV amplitudes. In spite of encouraging findings in neurological disorders, CNV is not widely used. In this review some possible reasons for this are pointed out.

Age-related differences for motion sickness in the rat.

The relationship between motion sickness and age was examined in three groups of male rats in order to determine whether or not age related differences in susceptibility are due to experiential factors or unspecified changes in the central nervous system. The results revealed no difference in susceptibility between 2-month old and 11-month old group. However, the 20-month old group was significantly less susceptible to motion sickness than either of the other groups. These findings indicate that general age related changes in the central nervous system are more likely to account for the relati

Development and evaluation of an individualised dental habituation programme for children with autism spectrum disorder living in Rogaland, Norway.

PURPOSE: To develop and evaluate an individualised habituation programme for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to enhance their cooperation during a routine dental examination. METHODS: In collaboration with school personnel, we developed and evaluated a research-based habituation programme comprising a toolbox with aids (pictures, videos, appliances, social stories) for preparations and gradual exposure to a 10-step dental examination. The habituation programme was subjected to a small-scale evaluation involving 17 children with ASD living in Rogaland, Norway. Changes in cooperati

Headache due to photosensitive magnesium depletion.

Clinical and paraclinical data (visual stress tests, electroencephalographic and cerebrovascular photic driving, visual evoked potentials) demonstrate that the concept of photosensitive headache is fully justified. The interictal hallmark of photosensitive cephalalgic patients is potentiation (or sensitization) instead of habituation. The aetiopathogenic mechanisms of photosensitive headache associate hypofunction of the biological clock and magnesium depletion. The new concept of headache due to photosensitive magnesium depletion seems justified. It appears logical to add the treatments of ma

Motion sickness--vestibular habituation with the centrifuge.

People who are prone to motion sickness have a directional preponderance of nystagmus to the left. Centrifuging will change this preponderance to the right in most people, and at the same time reduce their tendency towards motion sickness but only with regard to air travel.

Early-life cortisol exposure modulates habituation to human disturbance in fallow deer fawns.

The survival of vulnerable juveniles depends on how they respond to threat, yet the escape behaviour of individuals often differs despite similar exposure to stimuli. These differences may arise from interactions between experience, early-life physiology and developing behaviours such as play. Using flight initiation distance (FID) trials from fallow deer fawns (Dama dama) in an urban parkland, we investigated whether FID was associated with pedestrian exposure, locomotor play and cortisol extracted from neonatal hair. Fawns with lower cortisol showed shorter FIDs as prior pedestrian exposure

Olfactive short-term habituation in children and young people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Despite its importance for learning, the existence of the habituation process and its characteristics in people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) remains understudied. Habituation is, however, considered the simplest form of learning, and a significant neuroadaptive mechanism. Even though habituation occurs in all sensory modalities, the olfactory system is where it manifests itself very visibly. AIM: This study explores the olfactory short-term habituation abilities of children and young people with PIMD. METHOD: Twenty children and young people with PI

Directed Attention and Habituation: Two Concepts Critical to Tinnitus Management.

PURPOSE: Directed attention and habituation are key concepts pertaining to clinical intervention for bothersome tinnitus. Directed attention is the strategy of distracting attention away from the tinnitus. Habituation is the process of learning to stop paying attention to stimuli that are irrelevant or meaningless. Although tinnitus may be intrusive, it usually does not reflect some underlying condition requiring medical attention. Tinnitus in most instances is therefore considered an irrelevant, meaningless stimulus that is best treated by facilitating habituation to the phantom sound. This t

Habituation of the cold shock response: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cold water immersion (CWI) evokes the life-threatening reflex cold shock response (CSR), inducing hyperventilation, increasing cardiac arrhythmias, and increasing drowning risk by impairing safety behaviour. Repeated CWI induces CSR habituation (i.e., diminishing response with same stimulus magnitude) after ∼4 immersions, with variation between studies. We quantified the magnitude and coefficient of variation (CoV) in the CSR in a systematic review and meta-analysis with search terms entered to Medline, SportDiscus, PsychINFO, Pubmed, and Cochrane Central Register. Random effects meta-analyses

Larval zebrafish display dynamic learning of aversive stimuli in a constant visual surrounding.

Balancing exploration and anti-predation are fundamental to the fitness and survival of all animal species from early life stages. How these basic survival instincts drive learning remains poorly understood. Here, using a light/dark preference paradigm with well-controlled luminance history and constant visual surrounding in larval zebrafish, we analyzed intra- and intertrial dynamics for two behavioral components, dark avoidance and center avoidance. We uncover that larval zebrafish display short-term learning of dark avoidance with initial sensitization followed by habituation; they also exh

Habituation or Normalization? Experiential and Respiratory Recovery From Voluntary Hyperventilation in Treated Versus Untreated Patients With Panic Disorder.

Psychophysiological theories postulate respiratory dysregulation as a mechanism contributing to panic disorder (PD). Additionally, symptomatic and respiratory recovery from voluntary hyperventilation (HVT-recovery) have been shown to lag in PD and it is unclear if HVT-recovery normalizes with treatment. Thirty-seven panic disorder patients were randomized to hypoventilation therapy (TX, n = 20) or waitlist control (WL, n = 17) (Meuret et al., 2008). In a secondary analysis, their HVT-recovery was analyzed at pre- and post-TX/WL, compared to 29 healthy controls (HC). HVT included three phases:

Does anxiety sensitivity correlate with startle habituation? An examination in two independent samples.

Individuals with anxiety disorders have previously demonstrated abnormal habituation to aversiveness over time. As anxiety sensitivity (AS), or an individuals' propensity to fear of anxiety-related sensations, has been shown to be a risk factor for anxiety disorders (particularly panic disorder), the present study examined whether AS was also associated with abnormal habituation. This association was examined in two independent samples of undergraduates (Ntotal=178). Habituation was operationalised as the reduction in startle response to multiple startle probes presented over 2.5 minutes and t

Permanence of the habituation of the initial responses to cold-water immersion in humans.

Sudden immersion in cold water initiates an inspiratory gasp response followed by uncontrollable hyperventilation and tachycardia. It is known that this response, termed the "cold shock" response, can be attenuated following repeated immersion. In the present investigation we examined how long this habituation lasts. Twelve healthy male volunteers participated in the experiment, they were divided into a control (C) group (n = 4), and a habituation (H) group (n = 8). In October, each subject undertook two 3-min head-out seated immersions into stirred water at 10 degrees C wearing swimming trunk
