Exanthematous Eruptions in Children.

Childhood exanthems are commonly encountered by pediatricians in the hospital and the office. In the last several decades, we have seen a shift in the epidemiology of many of these diseases. After being deemed eliminated at the turn of 21st century, measles has experienced a resurgence secondary to falling vaccination rates, raising public health concerns. A new variant of hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by coxsackievirus A6 has been associated with more widespread and atypical disease, which can present diagnostic challenges to clinicians. Parvovirus B19, which is traditionally associate

Scabies in a bilateral hand allograft recipient: An additional mimicker of acute skin rejection in vascularized composite allotransplantation.

Vascularized composite tissue allografts include skin, which frequently undergoes, in the early post-graft period, acute rejections. The diagnosis of acute rejection may be difficult as it can be mimicked by several dermatoses. We present a bilateral hand allograft recipient who developed, 16.5 years post-graft, cutaneous lesions raising suspicion about rejection. Physical examination and skin biopsy were diagnostic of scabies. This ectoparasitosis should be added in the list of dermatoses that can mimic allograft rejection in vascular composite allografts.

Occupational dermatoses in cheese makers: frequent association of irritant, allergic and protein contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available on occupational dermatoses in cheese makers. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate occupationally related skin diseases in cheese makers. METHOD: In a retrospective study we analyzed 400 patients with occupational dermatoses which presented for expert opinion evaluation at our institution (1990-1995). RESULTS: Four patients with hand eczema acquired in cheese dairies were identified. All patients had a decreased alkali resistance. Atopy was a further risk factor in 2 patients. Three out of 4 patients were patch test positive for oc

Occupational acral dermatitis and where the twain shall meet.

This contribution, which is somewhat of a departure from the usual format, will focus on dermatologic conditions that are consequences of the patients' choices of employment, hobby, or even other forms of recreation. Most of the cutaneous changes involve the hands and feet, and each is labeled according to the anatomic location.

[Treatment of onychomycosis].

A positive mycological examination is required before discussion of treatment of onychomycosis. Onychomycosis is most commonly due to dermatophytes in association with tinea pedis and/or tinea manuum. It is a catched infection. Candida onychomycosis is a rare opportunistic infection and onychomycosis due to non-dermatophytic moulds is very rare as a "chance mishap". The treatment of dermatophyte onychomycosis takes each infected part of the nail into account. Topical antifungal agents should be reserved for mild to moderate onychomycosis. Systemic antifungal agents are required to severe onych

[Differential diagnosis of onychomycosis].

Almost 50% of nail pathology is caused by onychomycosis. However, the nail has a limited reservoir of clinical expressions and many conditions may mimic onychomycosis. Its differential diagnosis should be known in order to avoid useless or even toxic treatments. When confronted with ungual alterations restricted to one or some nails, it is fair to evoke onychomycosis but one should keep in mind repeated traumata to the toenails, psoriasis and chronic paronychia on the fingernails. Involvement of a large number of nails, especially all twenty nails, should not first suggest a fungal infection b

Do fungi play a role in psoriatic nails?

Onychomycosis is the most common disease of the nails and constitutes about a half of all nail abnormalities. Some factors like increasing age, male sex, repeated nail damage, genetic predispositions and underlying conditions, such as diabetes, immunodeficiency or peripheral arterial disease may predispose to develop onychomycosis. It is also suggested that abnormalities in nail morphology are the predisposing factors to onychomycosis. Psoriasis is one of the most common reasons of disturbed nail morphology and the spectrum of nail changes in psoriasis is very wide. Thus, there were suggestion

Erythromelalgia involving the face.

Erythromelalgia is a rare disorder characterized by burning pain, erythema, and increased temperature typically involving the distal extremities. Although it can progress to involve the face, erythromelalgia presenting only on the face is particularly rare. This disorder is often misdiagnosed when it presents on the extremities and is even more likely to be misdiagnosed when presenting only on the face, delaying appropriate treatment and causing considerable frustration for the patient. We report a case of a 26-year-old woman with erythromelalgia that involved only the face for a number of yea

Onchomycosis: an overview.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail unit, more common in toenails than in fingernails, and caused by a variety of fungi including dermatophytes, nondermatophyte molds, and Candida. There are 4 to 5 subtypes related to the method of fungal invasion of the nail unit, the most common being distal lateral subungual onychomycosis. Here the fungus enters the distal lateral part of the nail bed, the region of the hyponychium, often as an extension of tinea pedis. Hyperkeratosis occurs under the nail plate, resulting in detachment of the nail plate from the nail bed (onycholysis),

Red Palms' Syndrome and Red Fingers' Syndrome: A Mini Review.

Red palms syndrome consists of an intense redness on the palms of the hands and, occasionally, the soles of the feet. This infrequent condition may be primary or secondary. The primary forms are either familial or sporadic. They are always benign and do not require treatment. The secondary forms may have a poor prognosis related to the underlying disease, for which early identification and treatment are imperative. Red fingers syndrome is also rare. It manifests as a persistent redness on the fingers or toes pulp. It is typically secondary either to infectious diseases like human immunodeficie
