Zygomatic arch root position in relation to dietary type in haplorhine primates.

The zygomatic root, along with other key craniofacial features, is hypothesized to play a crucial role in strengthening the face in response to stresses and strains related to feeding. As such, it has been cited as indicative of dietary specialization among fossil taxa, although it remains unknown how variable zygomatic arch root position is among living primates, and whether its positioning predicts differences in diet. We test whether primates that consume more mechanically challenging foods possess more anteriorly positioned zygomatic roots compared to those consuming less challenging foods

No food left behind: foraging route choices among free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in a multi-destination array at the Awajishima Monkey Center, Japan.

Animals must make route choices every day when moving through their habitat while foraging. Choosing an optimal route can be cognitively costly, and primates and other animals have been shown to use simple heuristics, "rules of thumb", to make foraging route choices. We investigated the potential use of heuristics among foraging free-ranging Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) during solitary foraging trials. We also investigated the potential influence of individual variables (age and sex) and social variables (presence in the central group, presence of potential inter- and intraspecific compet

Assessing retinal function with the multifocal technique.

With the multifocal technique, as developed by Erich Sutter and colleagues, scores of focal electroretinogram (ERG) responses can be obtained in a matter of minutes. Although this technique is relatively new, it has already provided insights into the mechanisms of retinal disease. However, because it is new, there also remain questions about how it works and what it measures. This chapter considers some of these insights and some of these questions. The first part (Section 2) describes how the multifocal ERG (mERG) is recorded and considers its relationship to the full-field ERG. The mERG resp

Effect of toothbrushing on subgingival plaque formation.

The purpose of the present study was to find out to what extent subgingival plaque formation may be prevented by toothbrushing. The experiment was carried out on a total of 28 molars in four monkeys. On day 0 all supra- and subgingival deposits were removed, and during the following year, the teeth on the left side were carefully brushed three times a week, employing the Bass' method. The right side was kept as unbrushed control. The histologic sections, which were cut in a bucco-lingual direction, showed that subgingival plaque almost invariably had developed on the unbrushed teeth. Although

Arterial hypertension injures brain capillaries. Definition of the lesions. Possible pathogenesis.

Systemic hypertension (secondary to aortic coarctation) produces in monkeys, multifocal brain lesions where capillaries show increased diameter, endothelial degeneration and deposition of collagen and other substances in the basement membrane. In one animal, capillary changes were detected as early as 8 weeks after induction of hypertension. Similar capillary alterations were demonstrated in brain samples of hypertensive humans obtained at autopsy. We suggest that the above abnormalities may be the result of successive episodes of regional ischemia and/or hyperperfusion. Validation of these ob
