We have described an application of a radioimmunoassay (RIA)method, known as radioelectrocomplexing (REC), which involves the anodal migration of antigen and the cathodal migration of antibody in agar electrophoresis. The agar is divided into zones of free antigen (DNP125I-HSA) and antigen bound with anti-DNP. Complete assays of anti-DNP can be performed in 2-4 hr since both immune complex formation and separation of free from bound antigen can be accomplished by electrophoresis in 60-90 min. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is the most prevalent form of human immunotoxicity. It is caused by skin exposure to haptens, i.e., protein-reactive, low-molecular-weight chemical compounds, which form hapten-protein complexes (HPCs) in the skin, triggering the immune system. The cross-reactivity between muscle relaxants (MRs) is a risk for inducing anaphylaxis in sensitized patients. The preventive use of monovalent haptens (MHs) was studied in 21 cases. Inhibition of the skin reactivity by mixing MRs and MHs was observed, as was the inhibition of leucocyte histamine release to MRs, up to 3 h after infusion of MHs. These results argue for the use of such a protocol, if surgery requires the use of a MR in patients at risk for anaphylaxis.

Two methods, using methylenelactone dimethylamino adducts, were used to remove selectively alpha-methylene gamma-butyrolactones from Laurus nobilis L. extracts. Isolated lactones were identified and "treated" extracts recovered. Two guinea-pig groups were sensitized to crude extracts and "treated" extracts, respectively, and tested with primary sensitizer and with different lactones. Only the first group showed strong skin reactions to crude extracts and to the lactones. Treated extracts were shown to be anallergic.

Two antigenically distinct populations of rat antibodies to the 2,4-dinitrophenyl group (DNP) have been isolated by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and named fraction 1 and fraction 3. Both fraction 1 and fraction 3 had sedimentation coefficients of 6.9S, similar hexosamine contents (1.04 and 0.89 per cent) and electrophoretic mobilities similar to the γ2- and γ1-immunoglobulins of guinea-pigs and mice. Vaccines against drugs of abuse have induced antibodies in animals that blocked the biological effects of the drug by sequestering the drug in the blood and preventing it from crossing the blood-brain barrier. Natural Killer (NK) cells mediate innate immunity to infected and transformed cells. Yet, NK cells can also mount hapten-specific recall responses thereby contributing to contact hypersensitivity (CHS).
