Sebaceous gland carcinomas of the eyelids are rare neoplasms accounting for less than 1% of all eyelid tumors. They usually mimic chalazia and undergo repeated curettage before a definitive diagnosis is made. Case records of hospitalized children (age 4 to 18 years) with acute rheumatic fever on Oahu, HI, were reviewed for the 4-year period from Oct 1, 1980, to Sept 30, 1984. Ninety-eight cases met the modified Jones criteria. The overall incidence of rheumatic fever was 13.4 hospitalized children per 100,000 children per year and that for recurrent attacks was 2.5. The evolution of open heart surgery had its beginnings in 1938 with the closing of a patent ductus arteriosus. In 1954 Hawaii began to perform right heart catheterizations and a bubble oxygenator was made locally out of plastic food tubing and a Sigmamotor double head pump. The first open heart surgery was successfully performed at Queen's Hospital in December 1959 on a woman from Hilo with a large interatrial septal defect (IASD).

Sequence analysis has been performed on the DNA of 13 glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficient males from Hawaii, 6 of Filipino, 6 of Laotian, and 1 of Chinese extraction. Four different mutations were found: A-->T at cDNA nt 835, G-->A at nt 871, C-->T at nt 1360, and G-->A at nt 1388. The mutations at nt 835 and nt 1360 have not been described previously, and the latter, in particular, appears to be relatively common. The nt 1360 mutation changes the same codon as is altered in a previously described mutation, G6PD Andalus.

The intent of this study was to report on the epidemiology of hemivertebrae. Cases were derived from a population-based birth defects registry in Hawaii and comprised all infants and fetuses with hemivertebrae delivered during 1986-2002. Hemivertebrae rates per 10 000 births were determined for selected factors and comparisons made by calculating the rate ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). A confirmed case of penetration into the stomach wall by an anisakine nematode, to our knowledge the first in the United States, is reported. A viable third-stage larva of Anisakis simplex was removed from a woman in Hawaii who had eaten fresh, raw salmon. A serodiagnostic test showed the serum of the patient to be positive for A. simplex-specific IgE at days 11 and 60 postinfection. Our results indicate that eating fresh, raw salmon exposes consumers to a significant health risk.

BACKGROUND: Hand trauma, comprising injuries to both the hand and wrist, affects over five million people per year in the NHS, resulting in 250 000 operations each year. Surgical site infection (SSI) following hand trauma surgery leads to significant morbidity. Triclosan-coated sutures may reduce SSI in major abdominal surgery but have never been tested in hand trauma. Feasibility needs to be ascertained before a definitive trial can be delivered in hand trauma.

Among gonococcal isolates examined at the Hawaii State Laboratory Division from 2003 to 2011, the prevalence of elevated cefixime minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs; ≥0.064 μg/mL) and elevated cefpodoxime MICs (≥0.19 μg/mL) increased over time. In contrast, few isolates exhibited elevated ceftriaxone MICs (≥0.094 μg/mL), and the prevalence of elevated ceftriaxone MICs did not change.

Eighty-one barn owls (Tyto alba) and five Hawaiian owls or pueo (Asio flammeus sandwichensis) from Kauai, Oahu, Lanai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii (USA) were evaluated for cause of death, November 1992 through August 1994. The most common cause of death in barn owls was trauma (50%) followed by infectious disease (28%) and emaciation (22%). Most traumas apparently resulted from vehicular collisions. BACKGROUND: Thirty-five patients with an intracardiac myxoma underwent excision of the tumor in Hawaii between 1974 and 1993.
