In the Russian Federation anthrax epizootics are still being registered among animals as well as epidemic foci of the population. This situation is linked to natural reservoirs of the pathogen - numerous anthrax burial sites which belong to class I of dangerous objects. In this connection, a one-kilometer sanitary protective zone is required according to current Russian Federation legislation. As a result, a significant land of the country is unsuitable for any agricultural use. Meanwhile, epizootologo-epidemiological observations indicate to that different anthrax burial sites differ in their

Because toxicity varies enormously with the chemical state of metals, transformations in the environment control the level of the human health hazard. Important transformation processes include adsorption and desorption from soils and sediments, oxidation and reduction (redox) reactions, biotic metabolism, formation of organic metal compounds, and bioaccumulation. The six metals detailed in this chapter--arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and selenium--were chosen because of their toxicity, frequency of occurrence at hazardous waste sites, and involvement in environmental contamination…

A study was conducted with the objective of assessing how dietary, occupational, and residential exposures to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contribute to body burden among pregnant Mohawk women residing near three hazardous waste sites. From 1992 to 1995, 111 pregnant women were interviewed about fish consumption and other environmental risk factors and donated a 20-mL venous blood sample for serum PCB analysis. To supplement previous fish sampling, samples of residential soil, ambient air, wild duck, and local meats and vegetables were also collected and analyzed for PCBs. The results indi…

Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between contaminants in drinking water and cancer is reviewed. The reviewed studies cover exposure to: disinfection byproducts; nitrate; arsenic and other metals; volatiles and contaminants from hazardous waste sites; asbestiform fibers; radionuclides; and fluoride. Most investigations are ecologic, with some confirmation of elevated risk from individual-based studies. In the case of waterborne arsenic, and possibly chlorination byproducts, there is a consistent but small body of epidemiologic evidence of an association with one or more types of cancer. N…

We examined environmental and public health implications of energy-intensive artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, emphasizing health equity, workers, and vulnerable communities. We analyzed evidence on AI infrastructure across its life cycle, including data-center electricity demand, fossil-fuel power, water use, heat, noise, critical-mineral extraction, occupational exposures, and electronic waste (e-waste). AI infrastructure can expose nearby communities and workers to air pollution, heat, noise, water stress, hazardous mining conditions, and e-waste toxicants. In 2023, US data cente

Thousands of waste sites around the world contain mixtures of toxic chlorinated solvents, hydrocarbon solvents, and radionuclides. Because of the inherent danger and expense of cleaning up such wastes by physicochemical methods, other methods are being pursued for cleanup of those sites. One alternative is to engineer radiation-resistant microbes that degrade or transform such wastes to less hazardous mixtures. We describe the construction and characterization of recombinant Deinococcus radiodurans, the most radiation-resistant organism known, expressing toluene dioxygenase (TDO). Cloning of t

INTRODUCTION: Informal waste burning is an established source of particulate matter and hazardous combustion emissions in many low- and middle-income settings, yet its potential contribution to biological airborne exposure remains poorly characterized. This study investigated culturable airborne bacteria in active informal waste-burning environments in Hammanskraal, South Africa, and examined their spatial variability and potential relevance to environmental exposure.
METHODS: A cross-sectional exploratory field investigation was conducted at three active informal waste-burning sites and one

Benzidine, an odorless, white to slightly reddish-white crystalline organic compound, is an environmental contaminant that has been identified at about 30 National Priorities List (NPL) hazardous waste sites in the United States. In the environment, it is usually found attached to suspended particles either in its "free" state or as chloride or sulfate salts. In the past, U.S. industries used large quantities of benzidine to produce dyes for paper, clothes, and leather. Since the ban on its production and use in the United States in the 1970s, this compound is imported for specialty uses. Peop…

Possible associations between environmental hazards and the occurrence of childhood leukemia were investigated in Woburn, MA, for the period 1969-79. Residents of Woburn were concerned over what they perceived to be a large number of childhood leukemia cases; at the same time there was extensive publicity about uncontrolled hazardous waste sites in Woburn, which resulted in its being placed on the Superfund list. Many believed that the elevated rate of childhood leukemia was related to these sites or to two city water wells that had been closed in 1979 when they were found to be contaminated b…

When dealing with health impacts of environmental or occupational exposure such as groundwater contamination from or remediation effort associated with hazardous waste sites, we are obviously not facing individual, single chemicals. Thus, we are immediately confronted with the following questions: (1) Is single chemical risk assessment approach applicable to the multiple chemicals in hazardous waste sites? (2) How do we handle risk assessment of chemical mixtures? Although there were pioneering and commendable efforts from the USEPA to formulate guidelines for risk assessment of chemical mixtu…

Contaminated site redevelopment presents significant opportunities for sustainable urban development but remains challenged by a complex interplay of barriers and drivers. Existing approaches often treat these factors in isolation, lacking an integrated framework to address them holistically. This study addresses that gap by developing a comprehensive model to support effective contaminated site redevelopment. Through an extensive literature review and expert consultations, key barriers, drivers, and strategies were identified. A structured questionnaire involving 36 experts was conducted to r

A paper in the International Journal of Cancer analyzed Palestinian cancer registry data in the West Bank from 1998 to 2007, showing a cluster of elevated cancer incidence in rural villages in south-west Hebron, with a 4.10 risk ratio for childhood lymphoma (p = 0.0023). The paper called for investigation of the environmental or genetic etiologies of this cluster in an otherwise unremarkable rural area.1 Our research in these same villages shows them to be the center of an extensive informal electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) dismantling industry in Palestine, operating for almost two d

AIM: The rapid industrialisation and urbanisation fuelled by a fast-growing population has led to the generation of a huge amount of waste in most communities in developing countries. The hidden disorders and health dangers in waste dumps are often ignored. The waste generated in local communities is usually of a mixed type consisting of domestic waste and waste from small-scale industrial activities. Among these wastes are toxic metals, lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), halogenated organic compounds, plastics, remnants of paints that are themselves mixtures of hazardous sub

Waste adsorbents generated from treating Cr(VI)-containing wastewater are hazardous materials and generally landfilled or treated by acid or base desorption, with concomitant high cost and toxic effects. The present work shows that these Cr adsorbents can be reused as highly efficient catalysts for treating sulfur-containing VOCs (CH3SH), not only avoiding the economic and environmental impact from the conventional approaches, but also achieving the efficient treatment of sulfur-containing waste gas. Importantly, these reused Cr adsorbents exhibit enhanced activity and stability compared with

Most exposures of humans to environmental agents involve mixtures of chemicals, rather than individual chemicals. Some chemicals can cause hepatocellular proliferation and act as neoplastic promoters. Little is known concerning hepatocellular proliferation caused by chemical mixtures such as those found in groundwater at hazardous waste sites. Therefore, a 6 month study was performed to investigate hepatocellular proliferation and histopathological changes in F344 rats after long-term, low-level exposure to a mixture of groundwater contaminants. The seven chemicals used are among the most freq…

Ca/Fe-rich antibiotic fermentation residues (AFRs), a type of hazardous waste, can be regarded as recyclable biomass and metal resources. However, concurrent detoxification and reutilization of biomass and metals resources from AFRs have never been reported before. In this study, Ca/Fe-rich vancomycin fermentation residues were pyrolyzed into biochar to adsorb phosphate for the first time. The residual vancomycin and antibiotic resistance genes were completely decomposed during pyrolysis. The resultant Ca/Fe-rich biochar exhibited excellent performance at adsorbing phosphate without further mo

BACKGROUND: Waste is a composite mixture of different substances including endotoxins, organic dust and bio-aerosol stuffed with micro-organisms, and various toxic organic and inorganic chemicals, which may be intrinsically hazardous to human health. Therefore, health risks may derive from direct or indirect contact with garbage.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched for English-language literature describing the relationships between garbage and skin diseases in order to provide a state-of-the-art review on what is currently known about waste exposure effects on skin health.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS:
