From disease- to people-centred pandemic management: organized communities, community-oriented primary care and health information systems.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the health equity gap between and within countries. Western countries were the first to receive vaccines and mortality was higher among socially deprived, minority and indigenous populations. Surprisingly, many sub-Saharan countries reported low excess mortalities. These countries share experiences with community organization and participation in health. The aim of this article was to analyse if and how this central role of people can promote a successful pandemic response. METHODS: This analysis was partly based on local and national experiences shar

Robust and flexible smart silk/PEDOT conductive fibers as wearable sensor for personal health management and information transmission.

Flexible highly conductive fibers have attracted much attention due to their great potential in the field of wearable electronic devices. In this work, silk/PEDOT conductive fibers with a resistivity of 1.73 Ω·cm were obtained by oxidizing Ce3+ with H2O2 under alkaline conditions to produce CeO2 and further promote the in-situ polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on the surface of silk fibers. The morphology and chemical composition of the silk/PEDOT conductive fibers were characterized and the results confirmed that a large amount of polythiophene was synthesized and deposited

Innovative Information Technology-Powered Population Health Care Management Improves Outcomes and Reduces Hospital Readmissions and Emergency Department Visits.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic conditions are often the most frequent users of health care. Moreover, adapting to developments in one's illness, understanding how to self-manage a chronic illness, and sharing information between primary care and specialty providers, can be a full-time job for someone with a chronic illness. In response to these challenges, Christiana Care Health System (Wilmington, Delaware) developed Care Link, an information technology (IT)-enhanced care management support to enable populations of patients to achieve better clinical outcomes at lower cost. METHODS: In 20

Applying Science: Opportunities to Inform Disease Management Policy with Cooperative Research within a One Health Framework.

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the current saiga antelope die off in Kazakhstan each represent very real and difficult to manage public or veterinary health crises. They also illustrate the importance of stable and funded surveillance and sound policy for intervention or disease control. While these two events highlight extreme cases of infectious disease (Ebola) or (possible) environmental exposure (saiga), diseases such as anthrax, brucellosis, tularemia, and plague are all zoonoses that pose risks and present surveillance challenges at the wildlife-livestock-human interfaces.

Mapping patient pathways and understanding clinical decision-making in dengue management to inform the development of digital health tools.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a common viral illness and severe disease results in life-threatening complications. Healthcare services in low- and middle-income countries treat the majority of dengue cases worldwide. However, the clinical decision-making processes which result in effective treatment are poorly characterised within this setting. In order to improve clinical care through interventions relating to digital clinical decision-support systems (CDSS), we set out to establish a framework for clinical decision-making in dengue management to inform implementation. METHODS: We utilised process m
