Aberrant Functional and Causal Connectivity in Acute Tinnitus With Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The neural bases in acute tinnitus remains largely undetected. The objective of this study was to identify the alteration of the brain network involved in patients with acute tinnitus and hearing loss. METHODS: Acute tinnitus patients (n = 24) with hearing loss and age-, sex-, education-matched healthy controls (n = 21) participated in the current study and underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning. Regional homogeneity and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation were used to investigate the local spontaneous neural activity and functional connectiv

Novel loss-of-function mutations in COCH cause autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss.

COCH is the most abundantly expressed gene in the cochlea. Unsurprisingly, mutations in COCH underly hearing loss in mice and humans. Two forms of hearing loss are linked to mutations in COCH, the well-established autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss, with or without vestibular dysfunction (DFNA9) via a gain-of-function/dominant-negative mechanism, and more recently autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (DFNB110) via nonsense variants. Using a combination of targeted gene panels, exome sequencing, and functional studies, we identified four novel pathogenic variants (two nonsens

Cochlear Implantation and Social-Emotional Functioning of Children with Hearing Loss.

This study examined the contribution of cochlear implants (CIs) to the social-emotional functioning of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (dhh). Sixty-three parents of children who are dhh participated in the study. Thirty children were CI users and 32 used hearing aids (HAs). They completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and a background questionnaire. Parents of children with CIs reported lower levels of hyperactivity/inattention and higher levels of pro-social behavior compared to parents of children with HAs. Additionally, older age when hearing loss was detected was re

The relationships between cognitive function and hearing loss among the elderly.

[Purpose] Research related to dementia has gained momentum in South Korea and studies have found that the auditory sense affects dementia. This study aims to examine the relationship between the decline in hearing function and the overall cognitive function among the elderly. [Subjects and Methods] Eighty-two older adults aged 65-90 years (mean age: 79.3, SD: 5.2) participated. The Korean Mini-Mental State Examination was used to assess cognitive function. Further, to assess the hearing function, pure-tone audiometry was performed prior to the cognitive function test. We used a paired t-test a

Loss-of-Function SOX10 Mutation in a Patient with Kallmann Syndrome, Hearing Loss, and Iris Hypopigmentation.

BACKGROUND: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder consisting of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. KS is occasionally associated with deafness. Recently, mutations in SOX10, a well-known causative gene of Waardenburg syndrome (WS) characterized by deafness, skin/hair/iris hypopigmentation, Hirschsprung disease, and neurological defects, have been identified in a few patients with KS and deafness. However, the current understanding of the clinical consequences of SOX10 mutations remains fragmentary. CASE REPORT: A Japanese male patient presented

Prospective evaluation of hearing aid fitting adjusted toward one-third functional gain in patients with sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate whether modifying DSL version 5-based hearing aid (HA) fittings by adjusting gain on HA fitting software so that measured functional gain (FG) approached a one-third gain (1/3G) target could provide appropriate fitting outcomes in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. METHODS: Twenty-four patients (48 ears) with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss underwent initial HA fitting using the DSL version 5 prescription formula. FG was measured at 250-4000 Hz, and HA gain was adjusted on HA fitting software so that FG approached the target 1/3 G. Speech discr

The Effects of Age-Related Hearing Loss on the Brain and Cognitive Function.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a common problem for older adults, leading to communication difficulties, isolation, and cognitive decline. Recently, hearing loss has been identified as potentially the most modifiable risk factor for dementia. Listening in challenging situations, or when the auditory system is damaged, strains cortical resources, and this may change how the brain responds to cognitively demanding situations more generally. We review the effects of ARHL on brain areas involved in speech perception, from the auditory cortex, through attentional networks, to the motor system.

Assessing residual vestibular function in adults with congenital hearing loss.

This study adopted an inner ear test battery in adults with congenital hearing loss to assess residual vestibular function. Thirty patients with non-inherited non-syndromatic congenital hearing loss were assigned to two groups based on their pure tone average (PTA). Subjects in Group A (n = 10) had PTA >90 dB, and those with PTA ≤90 dB were assigned to Group B (n = 20). All patients underwent audiometry, and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), cervical VEMP (cVEMP) and caloric tests. Percentages of abnormal PTA, and cVEMP, oVEMP, and caloric test results showed a significantly

Vestibular function in families with inherited autosomal dominant hearing loss.

The inner ear contains the developmentally related cochlea and peripheral vestibular labyrinth. Given the similar physiology between these two organs, hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction may be expected to occur simultaneously in individuals segregating mutations in inner ear genes. Twenty-two different genes have been discovered that when mutated lead to non-syndromic autosomal dominant hearing loss. A review of the literature indicates that families segregating mutations in 13 of these 22 genes have undergone formal clinical vestibular testing. Formal assessment revealed vestibular dysfu

Bilateral idiopathic loss of peripheral vestibular function with normal hearing.

From 1982 to 1993, 52 electronystagmograms (FNG) revealed an absent nystagmic reaction on both caloric (44 30 and 10 degrees C water irrigation) and rotatory pendular testing (0.05 Hz/peak velocity 60 degrees/s), which represents 0.6% of all FNG performed during this period. Among these examinations, 14 patients (27%) presented a bilateral idiopathic loss of vestibular function (BILVF) with normal hearing and without associated neurological symptoms. Two different groups emerged: one group with simultaneous onset of BILVF ( 10 patients), with sudden imbalance and disequilibrium, worse in darkn

Hearing Loss and Cognitive Function in Early Old Age: Comparing Subjective and Objective Hearing Measures.

INTRODUCTION: Population-based research has consistently shown that people with hearing loss are at greater risk of cognitive impairment. We aimed to explore the cross-sectional association of both subjective and objective hearing measures with global and domain-specific cognitive function. We also examined the influence of hearing aid use on the relationship. METHODS: A population-based sample (n = 1,105, 52% women) of 70-year-olds that were representative of the inhabitants of the city of Gothenburg, Sweden completed a detailed cognitive examination, pure-tone audiometry, and a questionnair

Effects of substance P during the recovery of hearing function after noise-induced hearing loss.

Substance P (SP) is a widely distributed neurotransmitter in living tissues and is involved in various repair processes. We investigated the possibility that SP may ameliorate cochlear hair cell damage produced by noise exposure. The present study examined the effect of SP in protecting the cochlea from noise damage in guinea pigs exposed to noise after an infusion of SP into the inner ear. Changes in the hearing threshold (auditory brain response, ABR), number of synaptic ribbons, and the appearance of the outer hair cells after noise exposure were analyzed at 2 severity levels of noise-induc

Degree-based and functional descriptions of paediatric hearing loss: a retrospective chart review.

OBJECTIVE: The report from a paediatric audiology assessment is a lasting record of clinical events and a channel for sharing information about hearing loss, but we lack information about current practices in this area. DESIGN: We completed a retrospective chart review from infants with congenital hearing loss. STUDY SAMPLE: We analysed 374 reports to investigate how audiologists described hearing loss using a closed category set based on the level of descriptive information provided. We also analysed which child-level and clinic-level factors predict a report category. RESULTS: Most report
