Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) have been developed to diagnose H. pylori infection. However, the methods are not standardized. We therefore evaluated the sensitivity of ELISA developed in our laboratory in a study population comprising 38 patients with dyspeptic symptoms and 41 healthy children under 10 years. The assays for immunoglobulin G used a pool of sonicated isolates of H. pylori from five patients with dyspeptic symptoms. Serum levels IgG antibodies to cell sonicates of H. pylori were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in patients with positive culture than in the control gr

Helicobacter pylori (HP) is considered the etiological agent of chronic active gastritis and suspicion is strong that it plays an important role in duodenal ulcer. Recently, several clinical studies reported that eradication of HP markedly reduces the frequency of ulcer relapse. Triple-drug treatment, including a bismuth salt and 2 antibiotics (usually metronidazole with either amoxycillin or tetracycline) is considered the treatment of choice. It has been shown that the most important factor for predicting success of treatment is the sensitivity of HP to metronidazole, which varies considerab

A passive microhemagglutination test was applied for the detection of H. pylori antibodies. The presence of elevated antibody titers was most frequently encountered in the sera of patients from whom H. pylori was isolated. No relationship between the level of antibodies and the clinical picture of peptic ulcer disease was noted. In addition, negative results from bacteriologic and serologic studies in patients with confirmed histopathologic changes and typical clinical symptoms may suggest that peptic ulcer disease and chronic inflammation of gastric mucosa is not always accompanied by the pre

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) affects half of the world's population. Increasing antibiotic resistance seems to be causing significant clinical problems. The efficacy of bismuth-containing sequential therapy with clarithromycin (BSTC), bismuth-containing sequential therapy with levofloxacin (BSTL), and bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (BQT) regimens on H. pylori eradication was investigated. The authors also investigated whether high gastric H. pylori colonization density affected treatment success through different treatment regimens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of

Gastric ulcers are characterized by mucosal damage extending into the submucosa or deeper, with the most common causes being Helicobacter pylori infection and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use. However, various infectious pathogens, such as pyogenic bacteria, Treponema pallidum, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, viruses, fungi, and parasites, can also cause gastric ulcers. Non-H. pylori infectious gastric ulcers are uncommon and often present with nonspecific symptoms, making their diagnosis challenging. A differential diagnosis requires a comprehensive understanding of the underlying diseases

Helicobacter pylori is recognized as an important cause of chronic antral gastritis and peptic ulceration. Moreover, H. pylori associated inflammatory process has been linked with gastric carcinoma. Many putative virulence factors of H. pylori have been suggested, including motility, urease and cytotoxins production and bacterial adhesins. An accessory function of CagA antigen and bacterial heat-shock proteins in the pathogenesis of H. pylori infections have been also considered. H. pylori-induced immunological response is discussed as regards local and general antibody production, the interac

Helicobacter species affect humans and animals, mainly causing gastrointestinal but also extra-gastrointestinal pathologies. Besides Helicobacter pylori, which is the main human pathogen, Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) are also associated with human diseases, thus raising concern about their zoonotic potential. Veterinarians are considered a risk group for NHPH infections and act as first-line communicators to animal owners about their prophylaxis. Therefore, we aimed to assess the knowledge and perception of veterinarians working in Greece about Helicobacter pylori and NHPH by a

BACKGROUND: Eradication therapy is known to be effective against Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric MALT lymphoma but predicting the efficacy of eradication therapy against Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric MALT lymphoma is difficult. Recent reports have shown that non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections induce gastric MALT lymphoma, and we aimed to clarify whether non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections are associated with the efficacy of eradication therapy.
METHODS: We analyzed eradication therapy as a first-line treatment for 182 cases of gastric MALT lymphoma, classi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The biliary tract cancer or cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) represents the sixth leading cause of gastrointestinal tumors in the Western world, and mortality varies across the world, with regions such as Chile, Thailand, Japan, and northeastern India presenting the highest rates. CCA may develop in the bile duct, gallbladder, or ampulla of Vater; and risk factors include obesity, parity, genetic background, geographical and environmental factors. Inflammation induced by bacterial infections might play a role in the pathogenesis of CCA. In this work, we investigated whether there

Recent studies have indicated a strong link between Helicobacter pylori and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and iron deficiency anemia. Interesting results have also been obtained for ischemic heart disease, though most putative associations between H. pylori infection and extragastric disease remain speculative. With regard to other Helicobacter species, Helicobacter felis has been shown to play a role in gastric carcinogenesis in mouse models. An increased susceptibility to cholesterol gallstone formation has been described in animals fed a lithogenic diet and infected with Helicobacter

The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of mixed (multiple-genotype) Helicobacter pylori infections (MGIs) in 155 Bulgarian symptomatic patients (21 children and 134 adults). MGIs were common (36.1%), including double-strain (34.8%) and triple-strain infections (1.3%). None of the 8 ulcer patients harbored multiple subtypes. We detected 18 multiple allelic combinations, of which the most frequent subtypes (17.4%) were vacA s1as2 and vacA s1cs2. The 2 patients with triple-strain infections had vacA s1bs1cs2i1i2/iceA1A2 and vacA s1as1cs2 subtypes. They were both ad

AIM: Helicobacter cinaedi, a Gram-negative spiral bacterium, is a rare cause of bacteremia in humans. Unfortunately, little is known about H. cinaedi infections in emergency departments (EDs). We aimed to describe the clinical features of H. cinaedi infections in the ED.
METHODS: We conducted a descriptive study at the ED of Kobe City General Hospital (KCGH) in Japan between November 2011 and December 2020. We included all ED patients with H. cinaedi infections. We retrospectively obtained the patient data from electronic medical records and described the patient characteristics, clinical cou

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the causative agent of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and gastric cancer (GC). While this bacterium infects 50% of the world's population, in Africa its prevalence reach as high as 80% as the infection is acquired during childhood. Risk factors for H. pylori acquisition have been reported to be mainly due to overcrowding, to have infected siblings or parent and to unsafe water sources. Despite this high H. pylori prevalence there still does not exist an African guideline, equivalent to the Maastricht V/Florence Con

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Helicobacter pylori is an important etiologic factor in the development of gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of H. pylori infections in the induction of mutagenic events in gastric epithelial cells. The effect of a high-salt diet as a genotoxic risk factor was also investigated.
METHODS: Big Blue transgenic male mice (C57Bl/6) were inoculated with H. pylori (strain SS1) or Helicobacter felis (strain CS1) for 6 and 12 months. The frequency and spectrum of mutations at the stomach level were assessed. Inflammatory host response and inducible nitric

The investigation of possible H.p. role in the development of stomach mucous changes, promoting to arising of hyperplasiogenic polypus is the purpose of this study. Gastro-duodenal endoscopy with biopsy of stomach mucous from the antral part, body and bottom for H.p. diagnosis and morphological changes was made in 85 patients (at the age of 43-82 years) with hyperplasmiogenic polypus. The H.p. associated chronic gastritis was determined in 47.6% of the patients. H.p. intensity (prevailed weak and moderate--69.2%) correlated with the inflammation activity degree (1st and 2nd--80.3%) and with dy

This review of recent publications related to the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori highlights the origin of the infection, its changing prevalence, transmission, and outcome. A number of studies have addressed the ancestor roots of the bacteria, and the first genomewide analysis of bacterial strains suggests that its coexistence with humans is more ancient than previously thought. As opposed to the generally declining prevalence of H. pylori (including China and Japan), in Sweden, the prevalence of atrophic gastritis in the young population has risen. The prevalence of the infection remains

Helicobacter pylori is estimated to infect more than half of the worlds human population and represents a major risk factor for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, MALT lymphoma, and gastric adenocarcinoma. H. pylori infection and clinical consequences are controlled by highly complex interactions between the host, colonizing bacteria, and environmental parameters. Important bacterial determinants linked with gastric disease development include the cag pathogenicity island encoding a type IV secretion system (T4SS), the translocated effector protein CagA, vacuolating cytotoxin VacA, adhes

Helicobacter pylori infects about 50 % of the world's population, causing at a minimum chronic gastritis. A subset of infected patients will ultimately develop gastric or duodenal ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, or MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue) lymphoma. Eradication of H. pylori requires complex regimens that include acid suppression and multiple antibiotics. The efficacy of treatment using what were once considered standard regimens have declined in recent years, mainly due to widespread development of antibiotic resistance. Addition of bismuth to standard triple therapy reg
