Lagochilascariasis: A Neglected Zoonosis in the Brazilian Amazon Biome and the Role of Wildlife in Its Epidemiological Chain Amidst Anthropization.

Lagochilascariasis is a neglected zoonotic helminthiasis, caused by Lagochilascaris minor, characterized by a complex and not well understood transmission cycle. This parasitic disease is endemic to Latin America, particularly Brazil, and is associated with rural and forested areas, where humans may serve as accidental hosts. The southeastern region of Pará state reports the highest number of cases, highlighting its epidemiological significance. Wildlife species, especially carnivores and rodents, play crucial roles as definitive and intermediate hosts, respectively. Although lagochilascariasi

Lagochilascariosis in Brazil: A systematic search and descriptive review, and the first report of Lagochilascaris minor Leiper, 1909 infection in a domestic cat from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.

Lagochilascariosis is a rare and neglected zoonotic helminthiasis caused by Lagochilascaris spp., in which domestic and wild carnivores and humans act as definitive hosts. Among the six described species, Lagochilascaris minor is the only one known to infect humans. Clinically, the disease is characterized by nodular lesions, mainly in the cervical region, often associated with purulent exudate, and it occurs throughout the Neotropical region. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of lagochilascariosis in animals and humans and to report the first case of L. minor infection in a dome

Vaccination against helminth parasite infections.

Helminth parasites infect over one fourth of the human population and are highly prevalent in livestock worldwide. In model systems, parasites are strongly immunomodulatory, but the immune system can be driven to expel them by prior vaccination. However, no vaccines are currently available for human use. Recent advances in vaccination with recombinant helminth antigens have been successful against cestode infections of livestock and new vaccines are being tested against nematode parasites of animals. Numerous vaccine antigens are being defined for a wide range of helminth parasite species, but

Helminth parasites of humans and ruminant livestock in Saudi Arabia: Diversity and zoonotic risks.

Helminth infections continue to cause major economic losses and represent a persistent zoonotic threat in tropical and subtropical regions. In Saudi Arabia, diverse ecological conditions, transboundary livestock movement, and traditional grazing systems facilitate the persistence of a wide variety of helminth parasites. However, information on their diversity and distribution remains fragmented across decades of localized studies. This present review synthesizes published data on helminths infecting humans and ruminant livestock in Saudi Arabia between 1985 and 2025. Literature retrieved from

Oxfendazole: a promising agent for the treatment and control of helminth infections in humans.

Oxfendazole (methyl [5-(phenylsulphinyl)-1H benzimidazole-2-yl] carbamate) has a particularly long metabolic half-life in ruminants, and its metabolite fenbendazole also has anthelminthic action. A very limited number of drugs are available for the treatment of some zoonotic helminth infections, such as neurocysticercosis and echinococcosis. More recent work has expanded oxfendazole's nonclinical safety profile and demonstrated its safety and bioavailability in healthy human volunteers, thus advancing the possibility of a new and greatly needed option for antiparasitic treatment of geohelminth

The intestinal helminth community of the spiny-tailed lizard Darevskia rudis (Squamata, Lacertidae) from northern Turkey.

Populations of the lizard Darevskia rudis (Bedriaga, 1886) from northern Anatolia were examined for intestinal parasites in adult specimens. One cestode, Nematotaenia tarentolae López-Neyra, 1944 and four nematode species, Spauligodon saxicolae Sharpilo, 1962, Skrjabinelazia hoffmanni Li, 1934, Oswaldocruzia filiformis (Goeze, 1782) and Strongyloides darevskyi Sharpilo, 1976, were found. Three of these nematodes, S. saxicolae, S. hoffmanni and S. darevskyi are suggested to be part of a module in the network of Darevskia spp. and their parasites. Only one, S. darevskyi, was identified as a Dare

Methods to sustain drug efficacy in helminth control programmes.

Assessment of the efficacy of anthelminthic treatment in public health is a broad concept, which goes beyond parasitological methods and should be clearly defined according to several indicators of morbidity. Several factors may influence the efficacy of anthelminthic drugs. The quality of drug is an issue of great importance, especially when produced locally as a generic product and used in large-scale chemotherapy-based control programmes. Other factors include the drug-patient interaction, the host-parasite relationship, the diagnostic method used, genetic variations between parasite strain

Co-existence of congeneric species of acanthocephala: Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae in eels Anguilla anguilla in Ireland.

A population of eels Anguilla anguilla from Lough Derg, R. Shannon, Ireland, harbouring infections of both Acanthocephalus lucii and A. anguillae was studied over three years. Both parasite species had the same intermediate host and eels appeared to be the only definitive host for A. anguillae. Throughout the whole period, A. lucii was the dominant parasite, was over-dispersed throughout the eel population and most frequently occurred as a single species infection. A. anguillae was far less common, its dispersion was close to random at most times and it almost invariably occurred as a mixed sp

[Epidemiology of alveolar echinococcosis in France. 1. Intestinal helminths in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) from Haute-Savoie].

In the course of an epidemiological survey concerning the alveolar echinococcosis and its causative agent, Echinococcus multilocularis, the autopsies of 150 wild red foxes captured in the department of the Haute-Savoie between December 1983 and August 1988 disclosed 139 cases of intestinal helminthiasis with cestodes and nematodes; no trematode was found. Multiple infections were frequent. The cestoda recorded consist of the following species: Taenia crassiceps: 44 cases (29%); Echinococcus multilocularis: 34 cases (23%); Taenia polyacantha: 22 cases (14%); Mesocestoides litteratus: 7 cases (4

Anthelmintic Activities of Extract and Ellagitannins from Phyllanthus urinaria against Caenorhabditis elegans and Zoonotic or Animal Parasitic Nematodes.

The aerial parts of Phyllanthus urinaria are used in traditional medicine in West Africa against helminthiasis, but their anthelmintic potential has not been evaluated until now. Within the current study, a hydroacetonic extract (AWE) and fractions and isolated ellagitannins from P. urinaria were, therefore, tested in vitro against Caenorhabditis elegans and the larvae of the animal parasites Toxocara canis, Ascaris suum, Ancylostoma caninum, and Trichuris suis. Compounds 1:  - 13: , mainly representing ellagitannins, were isolated using different chromatographic methods, and their structures

Pathology of gastrointestinal helminthiasis in the brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis).

Lesions caused by experimentally produced mixed infections (two flukes, Phagicola longa and Mesostephanus appendiculatoides, and an ascarid, Contracaecum sp.) were studied in 40 brown pelicans. The flukes occurred throughout the intestines and caused mild villus atrophy, lengthening of the crypts, increased goblet cell population, and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. Contracaecum caused small ulcers where they attached to the esophagus and proventriculus. Microscopically, these ulcers had an eosinophilic, hyaline lining surrounded by focal necrosis, cellular infiltration, and fibrosis. Changes

[Main features of helminth parasitism in cattle in Ituri (Haut-Zaire). III. Geographic distribution and prevalence of the main helminths].

A necropsic survey, carried out in eleven slaughterhouses in Ituri (Haut-Zaïre), has permitted to define the geographic distribution and prevalences of the main cattle helminths. Trematodes, except the paramphistomes, had a very heterogeneous distribution. Prevalence of Fasciola gigantica ranged from 9 to 72% according to the sites, but these variations were not linked to topographic or climatologic parameters. The infection with Schistosoma bovis was much variable as well (12.5 to 72%) and seemed absent from the central high altitude area. The occurrence of Dicrocoelium hospes was restricted

Helminths of the San Diego alligator lizard, (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus webbi) (Anguidae).

Necropsy of 96 specimens of the San Diego alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus webbi) from Los Angeles County, California (USA) revealed the presence of two nematodes (Physaloptera sp. and Oswaldocruzia pipiens) and a cestode (Oochoristica sp.). Both O. pipiens and Oochoristica sp. represent new host records. Prevalence of helminth infection (all species) was only 4/96 (4%) indicating the lack of a helminth community and a depauperate helminth fauna in this host.
