Activity of ivermectin against canine intestinal helminths.

The anthelmintic activity of ivermectin was tested in 98 dogs against adult ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A braziliense), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and against experimentally induced infections (4th-stage larvae) of T canis and A caninum. Dosage levels tested were single subcutaneous injections of 50, 100, 200, or 400 micrograms/kg of body weight with appropriate vehicle-treated controls. A minimum of 4 (usually 5) dogs were tested with each parasite and dosage level. The lowest dosage level, 50 micrograms/kg, and all higher dosage level

On the mechanism of expulsion of helminths.

In rats infected with larvae of the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, treatment from day 9 to day 19 with the chemical histamine-liberator, compound 48/80, produces a clear delay in worm expulsion. However, the number of mast cells in the epithelium of the jejunum is not markedly decreased by this treatment.

[Infection Status of Intestinal Helminths in 2023].

To reduce the infection of intestinal parasites, the Division of Vectors and Parasitic Diseases, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) have been investigated the infection rate of intestinal parasites among prevalent areas and support to anthelminthics treatment. The survey used a microscopic test method that gathers stool samples from 26,258 residents in the endemic areas. And to investigate of infection status of Enterobius vermicularis, we collected samples using the cello tape perianal swap method from 34,993 children and examined for presence of E. vermicularis eggs. The over

Prospects for elimination of soil-transmitted helminths.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are endemic in 120 countries and are associated with substantial morbidity and loss of economic productivity. Although current WHO guidelines focus on morbidity control through mass drug administration (MDA), there is global interest in whether a strategy targeting disease elimination might be feasible in some settings. This review summarizes the prospects for switching from control to an elimination strategy. RECENT FINDINGS: STH control efforts have reduced the intensity of infections in targeted populations with associated reductions in m…

Regulatory B cells, helminths, and multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system. Autoimmunity appears to play a key role in both susceptibility to MS and development of disease, and pathogenesis has been linked to defects in distinct regulatory cell subsets. B cells are known for their capacity to produce antibodies. Recent advances in B cell biology, however, have demonstrated that regulatory B cells, a functional subset of B cells, contribute to tolerance development. Regulatory B cells were originally described in mouse autoimmunity and inflammation models where they d

Nematode infections: soil-transmitted helminths and trichinella.

Infection with soil-transmitted helminths occurs via ingestion of nematode eggs with contaminated food and water, via hands, or inhalation of dust, or by penetration of larvae through the skin. Trichinella infections are caused by the ingestion of larvae contained in undercooked meat. In highly endemic areas, preventive chemotherapy (ie, regular administration of anthelmintic drugs to at-risk populations) is the key strategy against soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Integrated control approaches, including improved hygiene, sanitation, and water, are required for lasting effects. Because of grow…

Helminths and allergy: the example of tropomyosin.

Parasitic worms contain potent allergens, but epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that infections with certain helminths are negatively associated with the prevalence of allergic diseases. This seeming contradiction can be addressed by using filarial tropomyosin as an example. This protein shares structural features and crossreacting B-cell epitopes with other highly allergenic invertebrate tropomyosins. Nevertheless, it usually does not provoke allergic disease in infected individuals. In addition, it is one of the most prominent candidates for an anti-nematode vaccine. Recent da…

How anthelmintics help us to understand helminths.

Study of the mode of action of the anti-parasitic 'hydrogenophore', closantel, revealed that mitochondria isolated from livers of untreated rats, 13 weeks after infection with Fasciola hepatica metacercariae, were uncoupled. This uncoupling of mitochondria might be induced by a product(s) excreted by the liver fluke. The lipid extractable product(s) binds to albumin and has a molecular weight between 500 and 1000 Daltons. A second unexpected finding indicates that closantel affects the motility of Schistosoma mansoni in vitro by interfering with mitochondrial ATP synthesis. The results obtaine

Helminth Therapy for MS.

In the last 50 years, environmental factors such as helminth infections have been proposed to explain why autoimmunity is less prevalent in the developing world; this proposal has been termed the hygiene or old friends hypothesis. The epidemiology of MS shows an inverse correlation with helminth infections. Positive effects of helminths in animal models of MS and observational studies in people with MS naturally infected with helminths suggest that those organisms can act as immune regulators and led to clinical trials of helminth therapy. The goal of helminth therapy is to introduce parasitic…

Oral helminthic infestations.

Oral infections caused by helminths (worms) are rarely encountered in clinical practice, and consequently, there is a paucity of information in the medical and dental literature about these conditions. In the present article, we review the English literature related to oral helminthic infestations. The main oral infections caused by helminths include four roundworm (trichinosis, trichuriasis, filariasis, and larva migrans) and three tapeworm infections (cysticercosis, sparganosis, and echinococcosis). Cases are mainly encountered in endemic areas and mainly present a benign clinical picture. T…

'Coinfection-helminthes and tuberculosis'.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a significant problem and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the developing world despite decades of intensive efforts to combat the disease. The poverty in these endemic areas is associated with an increased incidence of tropical helminthic infections. The purpose of this review is to bring to the fore, the urgent need to unravel the potential consequences of helminth coinfection to tuberculosis disease pathogenesis and transmission. RECENT FINDINGS: There is now strong experimental evidence that helminth-induced T helper (Th)2 an

Emerging helminth zoonoses.

As our ability to recognise and diagnose human disease caused by helminth parasites has improved, so our understanding of the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of these diseases has improved. Humans can develop patent infection with a wide range of helminth parasites, whose natural host is another vertebrate. Rather than focusing on a comprehensive review of zoonotic helminth infections, this review describes in detail examples of zoonotic helminth infections that have newly appeared in human populations, or have existed but are increasing in incidence or geographic range. Examples incl
