An indirect hemagglutination test for the diagnosis of leptospirosis is described; the test uses a soluble antigen from serotype patoc to sensitize sheep erythrocytes which are then fixed with glutaraldehyde. Evaluation of this procedure indicates that it is more reliable than the conventional macroscopic agglutination test and, in contrast with both microscopic and macroscopic agglutination tests, is positive only with sera from persons with current leptospiral illness. The test is simple and convenient and sensitized fixed cells may be stored for at least a year. In comparison with the macro…

Incorporation of heterologous immunoglobulin against human immunoglobulin G into the mumps HI tests provided a highly sensitive and specific way of measuring mumps antibody in human sera. The sensitivity of this enhanced mumps HI test compared favorably with that of an anti-immunoglobulin-enhanced virus plaque neutralization test, but the HI test required considerably less time and effort to perform.

John, T. Jacob (University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver), Marlene Stahl, and Vincent A. Fulginiti. Cumulative hemagglutination by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and other agglutinins. J. Bacteriol. 92:1002-1004. 1966.-The phenomenon of cumulative hemagglutination, or hemagglutination by two agglutinins, each in subagglutinating concentration, was demonstrated by use of four different systems, namely, horse serum and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, horse serum and measles antigen, M. pneumoniae and measles antigen, and parainfluenza 2 virus and M. pneumoniae. Cumulative hemagglutination appears to be t…
