Sensitive hemagglutination inhibition test for mumps antibody.

Incorporation of heterologous immunoglobulin against human immunoglobulin G into the mumps HI tests provided a highly sensitive and specific way of measuring mumps antibody in human sera. The sensitivity of this enhanced mumps HI test compared favorably with that of an anti-immunoglobulin-enhanced virus plaque neutralization test, but the HI test required considerably less time and effort to perform.

[The passive hemagglutination test in the evaluation of antitetanus immunity].

The conditioned, passive hemagglutination method, which is simple, quick, economical and very sensitive, is suited for large-scale studies in which it is not possible to carry out the in vivo seroneutralization. However, our experience has confirmed that it has certain drawbacks and restrictions: (1) the technique must be applied very carefully and good laboratory training is required. The results obtained by this method vary according to several factors, especially the degree to which the antigen has been purified and its blood carriers, therefore these results are not always consistent; (2)

[Serologic diagnosis of syphilis by the passive hemagglutination test].

The passive haemagglutination test in the diagnosis of syphilis was used with: 139 sera posing serological problems, 965 sera from subjects with syphilis at all stages of the disease and non-syphilitics. The percentages of agreement seen both in comparison of THPA with the TPI (94,5 p.cent) and the FTA abs test (97 p.cent) demonstrate its high degree of specificity and sensitivity. The reaction may be performed rapidly on a routine basis and requires little in the way of specialised material. These qualities should lead, in the near future, to the adoption of the T.P.H.A. as a routine examinat

Direct use of ion-exchange papers in hemagglutination-inhibition tests for drug abuse.

I modified a procedure for screening urine specimens for evidence of drug abuse, to permit direct use of commercially available ion-exchange papers in hemagglutination-inhibition assay for drug detection. Small circles punched out of the papers, which previously had been impregnated with drug-containing urine, were used in the detection step, leaving the remainder of the specimens on paper available for confirmatory analyses. The procedure is useful in screening for the presence of opiates, methadone, and (or) barbiturates.

Comparison of the complement fixation, indirect immunofluorescence, and indirect hemagglutination tests for malaria.

The complement fixation (CF), indirect immunofluorescence (IIF), and indirect hemagglutination (IHA)tests for malaria were compared by using sera from U.S. citizens with either natural infections or heroin-associated, needle-induced infections. In natural Plasmodium vivax infections, the CF, IIF, and IHA tests apparently detect malarial antibodies equally efficiently for the first 2 months after the onset of symptoms, but the titers obtained by CF and IIF rapidly decline within a year, while the IHA titers remain elevated. In the sera from heroin addicts who developed needle-induced P. vivax i
