Hematemesis: a rare presentation of gastric volvulus.

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding in gastric volvulus is extremely rare. We describe two patients with gastric volvulus who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

The Bouveret syndrome: an unusual cause of hematemesis.

Gallstones are usually silent. Less commonly, patients with cholelithiasis develop symptoms and/or complications; biliary fistula occurs in 3% to 5% of the cases. When a large stone is passed and occludes the duodenum, gastric outlet obstruction (the Bouveret syndrome) may result. In reported cases, the stones are usually larger than 2.5 cm. The usual presenting symptoms are those of bowel obstruction: abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Less commonly, the patients experience melena and, rarely, hematemesis. We describe a patient who had the largest stone reported to cause hematemesis rather…

Nodular Lymphoid Hyperplasia in Children: Recurrent Hematemesis.

Nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (NLH) is a pathology of the gastrointestinal tract that is commonly found in children. Most of its etiology is benign and associated with some underlying causes such as food hypersensitivity, viral or bacterial infection, giardiasis, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, immunodeficiency, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. It is characterized by the growth of submucosal lymphoid tissue and a mucosal response to different types of noxious stimuli. In this report, we present the case of a child with recurrent hematemesis.

Hematemesis Secondary to Complex Incarcerated Pantaloon Hernia.

Hematemesis with concomitant small bowel obstruction is an uncommon emergency department presentation. We report the case of a patient who presented with hematemesis and an incarcerated pantaloon hernia. While the patient initially had intact bowel movements and flatus, he eventually developed complete obstruction that required open surgical repair. In a patient with an incarcerated hernia and a history of recurrent small bowel obstruction, predicting strangulation or compromised bowel and the need for rapid surgical intervention can be difficult. Hematemesis concurrent with hernia incarcerati…

ECTOPIC LINGUAL THYROID PRESENTING WITH MASSIVE HEMATEMESIS.

Ectopic lingual thyroid is a rare developmental abnormality caused by aberrant embryogenesis during thyroid migration. Even though, most patients are asymptomatic, uncommonly the mass can be enlarged and cause dysphagia, dyspnea, upper airway obstruction, dysphonia, hypothyroidism. We report a very rare case of ectopic lingual thyroid presenting with massive hematemesis.

Hematemesis Leading to Diagnosis of Pulmonary Aspergillosis.

A 29-year-old previously healthy man with a month-long dry cough presented with hematemesis after mild chest trauma. Endoscopy showed a blood-filled stomach, but bleeding originated from the trachea. Bronchoscopy revealed an aspergilloma in the left upper lung lobe, confirmed histologically and by fungal culture. Imaging showed an apical cavity with pleural thickening. The patient had no history of tuberculosis, diabetes, or immunosuppression, and tested negative for human immunodeficiency virus. Hemorrhage resolved with conservative measures, and a 3-month course of voriconazole led to succes…

Jejunogastric intussusception: an unusual cause of hematemesis.

Jejunogastric intussusception is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of a previous gastrojejunal anastomosis. Although jejunogastric intussusception was first described in 1914, fewer than 200 cases have been reported in the English literature thus far. Awareness of this rare complication would help in early diagnosis and appropriate management. Described here is a case report of a patient who presented with hematemesis due to an acute jejunogastric intussusception associated with gangrene of the intussuscepted jejunum.

[Treatment of hematemesis and hematochezia in elderly patients].

Hematemesis and hematochezia (melena) in elderly patients are serious symptoms which should be carefully handled since they can lead to death without suitable treatment. In elderly patients the advance of arteriosclerotic changes throughout the body decreases blood flow and function in various organs. When these arteriosclerotic changes become prominent in the gastric vascular structure, bleeding from gastric ulcers tends to easily occur and it can be difficult to stop. A large amount of bleeding can cause irreversible shock due to the decreased cardiopulmonary function, and diminished hepator…

[Hematemesis in childhood. Use of the fiberscope in diagnosis].

Authors report the results of utilization of fiberscope (FEC) in pediatric patients with hematemesis. They emphasize the utility of this method, its high percentage of positivity in the diagnostic in relation to the precocity of the FEC and the high incidence of hemorrhage gastritis in relation to salycilates ingest.
