The frequency, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of incarcerated hernia are reviewed on the basis of a case series collected from two departments of general surgery. Various aspects of hernial incarceration are discussed and some conclusions concerning management are presented.

Twenty-seven reported cases of pericardial diaphragmatic hernia are reviewed and another case is added. This entity may be congenital or traumatic in origin, the latter being more frequent at a ratio of 2:1. All patients except one were male and the mean age at diagnosis was 40 years. The patients were usually symptomatic, the most frequent complaints being of cardiac or respiratory origin. Pneumoperitoneum may be diagnostic although chest roentgenograms and contrast studies may suggest the diagnosis. Computed axial tomography and echocardiography may prove useful in the future. We believe the…

INTRODUCTION: Spigelian hernia is a rare type of abdominal wall hernias which are often diagnosed when incarcerated. These hernias typically develop at the crossing point of the arcuate line and lateral portion of rectus abdominis muscle.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 44-year-old female patient admitted to our surgery unit for a painful lump in her right mesogastrium. Incarcerated atypical hernia in the right mesogastrium was suspected based on completed imaging assessments. Spigelian hernia was confirmed by preoperative findings. Interestingly, the patient applied interferon (multipl…

Hiatal hernia refers to conditions in which elements of the abdominal cavity, most com- monly the stomach, herniate through the esophageal hiatus into the mediastinum. Hiatal hernias (type I) are the most common type (85-95 %). Types II, III and IV are all varieties of paraesophageal hernias. In Makuuchi classification, sliding hiatal hernia is readily diag- nosed by endoscopy when greater than 3 cm in axial span. In western countries, it is diag- nosed when greater than 2cm. High-resolution manometry with pressure topography plotting allows for precise localization and quantification of the i…

We report two children with Amyand's hernia, where the appendices along with caecum were found within the left hernial sac, which were operated for obstructed inguinal hernia.

The management of articular cartilage defects remains a major clinical challenge owing to the tissue's limited intrinsic regenerative capacity. Conventional collagen-based hydrogels often fail to achieve functional repair due to a mismatch between their biological functions and mechanical properties. Here, for the first time, we apply recombinant human collagen type XVII (rhCOL17) to cartilage repair by engineering an injectable and photocrosslinkable hydrogel based on rhCOL17. A systematic screening identified the 15% methacrylated rhCOL17 (CMA) formulation as possessing optimal mechanical pr

Bladder hernia is a rare condition, but crural herniation of the bladder into the scrotum is very rare. A case of bladder hernia presenting with urological symptoms is described. A 71-year-old man presented to the urological ward complaining for persistent frequency and nocturia associated with loss offorce and decrease of caliber of the urinary stream and the presence of a large mass of the right scrotum. An IVP (intra venous pyelography) showed a large herniation of the bladder through the right inguinal canal into the scrotum. An inguinal incision was made and a crural hernia was identified…

The clinical diagnosis of Spigelian hernia can be difficult due to lack of specific and constant findings. We report two patients whose only symptoms on presentation were progressive abdominal pain and intermittent palpable mass. The radiographic demonstration of bowel extending outside the expected confines of the peritoneal cavity allowed prompt diagnosis and proper operative management in both patients. Spigelian hernia requires surgical correction to prevent complications of acute abdomen with strangulation or incarceration.

A case of direct traumatic inguinal hernia resulting when a young man was thrown forward against the handlebar in a motorcycle accident is described. Three weeks earlier this patient had had an appendectomy through a McBurney incision. Two criteria for such traumatic hernias are: immediate appearance after injury; and medical confirmation.
