OBJECTIVE: To determine whether gabapentin is effective in the treatment of persistent or intractable hiccups.
DATA SOURCES: A search of MEDLINE (1966-March 2013) using the MeSH search terms gabapentin, hiccups, and hiccups/drug therapy was performed. Additional databases searched included Web of Science (1945-March 2013) and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (1970-March 2013) using the text words gabapentin and hiccups. Bibliographies of relevant articles were reviewed for additional citations.
STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: All data sources were considered for inclusion. Prefere…

Hiccup is a spasmodic, involuntary contraction of the inspiratory muscles, associated with delayed and abrupt glottic closure causing a peculiar sound (Launois et al., 1993). A number of medical conditions are known to cause persistent and intractable hiccups. Among the drugs reported to induce hiccups, Thompson et al. stated that corticosteroids and benzodiazepines are the drug classes most frequently associated with the development of hiccups (Thompson and Landry, 1997). Antidopaminergic agents such as chlorpromazine and haloperidol are the preferred drugs used for the treatment of chronic h…

Chronic hiccups is a rare occurrence but can be debilitating for the patient. Successful intervention is seldom reported. The present case is a young adult who had severe almost continuous hiccups for 3 years after placement of a feeding gastrostomy and Nissen fundoplication. Within weeks of initiation of baclofen treatment, the hiccups ceased. Recurrences of hiccups have responded to increases in baclofen dosage.

Hiccup is a sudden contraction of the inspiratory muscles, followed by an abrupt closure of the glottis, thus producing a characteristic sound. Hiccups serve no known physiologic function. Mostly, it is a benign symptom which terminates without treatment. Persistent and intractable hiccups may indicate an organic disorder, thereby requiring evaluation based on history, physical examination, and selected laboratory tests. The treatment is based on the organic disorder, if it is found. The combination therapy with cisapride, omeprazole and baclofen is the most effective empiric treatment. We des…

A MEDLINE search of the National Library of Medicine data base from 1966-1994 was performed to review the anatomy and pathophysiology of intractable hiccups and their nondrug and drug therapies. Pertinent articles were further reviewed for older references and related literature. The infrequent occurrence of intractable hiccups makes it difficult to perform large, well-controlled clinical trials. The only approved drug for the disorder, chlorpromazine, may not be acceptable for every patient. Studies have been conducted with metoclopramide, valproic acid, nifedipine, and baclofen as alternativ…

Hiccups result from a wide variety of conditions that act on the supraspinal hiccup center or that stimulate or disinhibit the limbs of its reflex arc. While scores of hiccup remedies have been reported over the centuries, no single "cure" stands out as being the most effective. Measures that stimulate the uvula or pharynx or disrupt diaphragmatic (respiratory) rhythm are simple to use and often help to speed the end of a bout of otherwise benign, self-limited hiccups. Such manueuvers may also terminate persistent hiccups. Drug therapy usually becomes necessary for more intractable hiccups; ch…

BACKGROUND: Hiccups are involuntary diaphragmatic muscle contractions with early glottis closure terminating inspiration. They are classified into two types: acute (<48 hours) and persistent (>48 hours). COVID-19 is the defining health crisis of our generation. Although there are common symptoms of the disease (e.g. fever, cough), several atypical presentations have appeared as the pandemic has evolved. Here, we present a patient with COVID-19 presenting with fever, sore throat, and persistent hiccups.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 48-year-old man presented to the hospital with a seven-day history o…

Two patients with chronic hiccup and MRI demonstrated lesions at the level of the inferior olivary complex are here reported. Whereas the neurological examination was normal in case 1, case 2 had the syndrome of palatal myoclonus and progressive ataxia. In the case 1, extensive electrophysiological studies were consistent with hiccup, in the absence of any other disorder (in particular, there was no evidence of palatal myoclonus). These findings suggest that the dysfunction of the inferior olivary complex could be implicated in the pathogenesis of hiccup.

Hiccup is an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles resulting in sudden inspiration and closure of the glottis. The presence of hiccup in the perioperative period can be a challenging problem. Sudden movements of the patient from hiccups can interfere preoperative diagnostic procedures, intraoperative hiccup may delay the beginning of surgery, interfere with the surgical process, and affect intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative hiccup may affect would healing and hemodynamic stability. Hiccup can lead to have increased aspiration risk. Hiccup are is an incomple…

Persistent hiccup is uncommon, and the mechanism is poorly understood. We present the case of a 43-year-old male patient referred to the Algology department due to chronic back pain who developed what we believe a rare case of persistent hiccup secondary to caudal epidural steroid injection (CESI). The causes of hiccup are many and include electrolyte derangement, nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal disorders and instrumentation, cardiovascular disorders, renal impairment, central nervous system disorders, and drugs; however, the cause may be unknown. CESI is one of the treatments of ba…

A 79-year-old man, with history of recent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, came to our attention for persistent hiccup, dysphonia, and dysphagia. Noninvasive imaging studies showed a nodular lesion in the right hepatic lobe with transdiaphragmatic infiltration and increased tracer uptake on positron emission tomography. Suspecting a malignant lesion and given the difficulty of performing a percutaneous transthoracic biopsy, the patient underwent surgery. Histological analysis of surgical specimen showed biliary gallstones surrounded by exudative inflammation, resulting from gallbladder rupture an…

The patient was a 67-year-old male. A diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made both by transbronchial lung biopsy and by scalene node biopsy. The findings of his chest roentgenogram were categorized as the group II. There were no symptoms during follow-up period of one year at the out-patient clinic with no medication. The chest X-ray findings of the patient were slowly progressive. Intractable hiccup developed one year after his first visit to the hospital. With administration of prednisolone, serum angiotensin converting enzyme level decreased promptly, and the incidence of the hiccup attack decrea…

An eight-year-old, female intact Golden Retriever underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for investigation of urinary and faecal incontinence. Soon after induction of general anesthesia, tracheal intubation, and isoflurane administration, hiccup-like movements were evident. These hiccup-like movements did not respond to hyperventilation and increase of anesthetic. After having ruled out pulmonary disease, the animal was reanesthetized with a similar technique; hiccup-like movements reoccurred and did not stop after discontinuation of isoflurane and commencement of a propofol infusion. Even…

A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) provides an important access for patients requiring prolonged intravenous infusion. However, intravascular migration and subsequent malposition of a PICC may be caused by its flexibility and thinness and by changes in intrathoracic pressure and body position. In this report, we describe one case of persistent hiccup whose PICC migrated to and was bent and folded in the right subclavian vein.
