Quantification of trace metal contamination and ecological risks in river sediments of the Himalaya.

Riverbed mining exerts significant pressure on Himalayan river systems, yet its influence on trace metal dynamics in sediments remains poorly understood across elevation gradients. This study quantifies the concentration and ecological risk of six trace metals Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb in surface sediments from the Chandra River (Upper Himalayas), Beas River (Middle Himalayas), and Chakki Khad (Lower Himalayas), Himachal Pradesh, India. Ten surface sediment samples were collected from each river and evaluated using pollution indices (Igeo, PINemerow, PLI, PERI, MERMQ, and MEC), sediment quali…

Brown carbon is a significant contributor to aerosol climate forcing in the northwestern Himalayas.

We report here the climate-relevant optical properties and sources of water and organic-extractable brown carbon (BrCaq and BrCme) and its r … stablishing clearly that BrC is as significant a climate forcer as EC in the low-UV range in the NW Himalayas. Optical source apportionment revealed contributions of 69% from FF and 31% from BB to BrC babs_365, with the FF source exhibiting MAE 3.7 times that of BB (2.6 m2 g-1vs. 0.7 m2 g-1). These findings underscore BrC as a major climate forcer in the NW …

Multi-sensor-based rock glacier detection over Sikkim Himalaya.

Rock glaciers (RGs) are important landforms that store subsurface ice and influence mountain water resources; yet, their distribution in the Eastern Himalaya (EH) remains limited. This study maps RGs in the Sikkim, EH using Sentinel-1 small baseline subset (SBAS) InSAR time series (2022-2024) combined with high-resolution optical validation following the RG Inventories and Kinematics guidelines. SBAS-derived deformation signals were enhanced using seasonal-trend decomposition using LOESS (STL), which isolates long-term displacement while confining snowfall and moisture-related artifacts to sea

DNA barcoding and phylogenetic insights into the selected endemic flora of the Western Himalayas.

The Himalayan region is recognized as one of the world's major biodiversity hotspots due to its remarkable altitudinal variation, high species richness, and exceptional endemism. Despite its ecological significance, the endemic flora of the western Himalayas remains insufficiently explored at the molecular level. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of multiple nuclear and chloroplast DNA barcode loci (ITS2, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnA, trnV, rpoB, ycf3, and rbcLa) for the identification and phylogenetic assessment of 32 endemic and threatened plant species representing 31 genera and 24 fami…

Zinc-based agronomic bio-fortification strategies for soybean in the North Eastern Himalayas of India.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency is an emerging health issue in the North-Eastern (NE) Himalayas of India. Agronomic bio-fortification of soybean offers a promising solution as it is widely consumed throughout the NE regions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the response of soybean varieties to different Zn sources and methods in terms of Zn bio-fortification, and bio-availability. The results revealed that, the soybean variety JS-97-52 recorded greater seed (1.67-1.87 Mg ha⁻1 and stover yields (1.77-1.90 Mg ha⁻1; however, the JS-335 had higher Zn content (31-31.5 mg kg⁻1, lower phytic acid (PA) leve…

The dual role of atmospheric HULIS in inducing climate forcing and oxidative stress in the northwestern Himalayas.

We report here dual impacts of atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) on climate forcing and oxidative potential in the northwestern Himalayas. Neutral HULIS (H-n) dominantly constrained the seasonal water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) mass (53-63%) as well as bulk brown carbon (BrC) absorption (37-53%). The combined HULIS relative radiative forcing (RRF) at 300-400 nm ranged from 15±1% to 27±8% seasonally, and contributed 53-75% to BrC RRF. HULIS also accounted for more than half of the observed bulk volume-normalized oxidative potential (OPv), with greater contribution from H-n (31-37%) t…

Snowmelt dynamics and stream flow response to climate change in a mountainous basin, western Himalaya.

Snow is a critical component of the Himalayan hydrological cycle, sustaining streamflow, recharging groundwater, rejuvenating springs, maintaining soil moisture, and supporting various water-dependent sectors. However, climate warming is reducing seasonal snow cover and altering snowmelt timing, thereby increasing uncertainty in the relative contributions of snowmelt, rainfall, and groundwater to streamflow and limiting reliable prediction of future water availability. To address this scientific question, we integrated 24 years of satellite-derived snow-cover observations with field-based stab

Spatio-temporal patterns and factors controlling the hydrogeochemistry of the river Jhelum basin, Kashmir Himalaya.

River Jhelum is a major source of water for growing population and irrigation in the Kashmir Himalaya. The region is trending towards water scarcity as well as quality deterioration stage due to its highly unregulated development. The existence of few literature on various aspects of the basin prompts us to study the spatio-temporal variability of its physicochemical parameters and thereby to understand the regulating hydrogeochemical mechanisms based on 50 samples collected during high flow (June 2008) and low flow (January 2009) periods. The water chemistry exhibited significant spatial vari

Characterization of an environmental strain of Bacillus thuringiensis from a hot spring in Western Himalayas.

Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax, is responsible for a serious and often fatal disease of mammalian livestock and humans and is an important biological warfare agent. Bacillus sp. AKG was isolated from a hot spring in western Himalayas and species-specific primers targeting gyrB gene identified the strain as B. anthracis within cereus-group. Cloning, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of the partial gyrB sequence from strain AKG indicated a close affiliation with B. anthracis and a few recently isolated strains of B. thuringiensis (e.g., strain Al Hakam and serovar konku…
