[Causes of vascular injuries in alloplastic hip replacement].

Vascular injuries were treated in 8 cases of total hip replacement. Acute and subacute arterial thrombosis, an AV fistula, and local thrombosis of pelvic veins were observed. These vascular complications of total hip replacement must be avoided by an effective local operative technique. Contact of bone cement with the vascular loge must also be avoided in order to prevent toxic or thermic irritation of arteries or veins.

Traumatic injuries of the immature hip and pelvis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The pelvis and hip account for 0.3--4% of fractures of the immature skeleton, and generally result from high energy trauma. These fractures range in severity from apophyseal avulsions to complete disruptions of the pelvic ring. The purpose of this article is to review the presentation, diagnosis, treatment and complications of these injuries in order to inform clinicians involved in their management. There is a lack of evidence-based management protocols for fractures of the immature pelvis largely due to their rarity and lack of robust scientific literature on the topic. R

Iatrogenic vascular injuries during arthroplasty of the hip.

Vascular injuries during total hip arthroplasty (THA) are rare but when they occur, have serious consequences. These have traditionally been managed with open exploration and repair, but more recently there has been a trend towards percutaneous endovascular management. We performed a systematic review of the literature to assess if this change in trend has led to an improvement in the overall reported rates of morbidity and mortality during the last 22 years in comparison with the reviews of the literature published previously. We found a total of 61 articles describing 138 vascular injuries i

[Hip injuries in professional and amateur soccer goalkeepers].

Soccer goalkeeper often dive to the side loading their hip. Different hip injuries might result. Within the scope of this study the hip injury rate of professional and amateur soccer goalkeepers was investigated. Most often players suffer from contusions and abrasions. Bursitis is reported from professional players, but hardly from amateur players. Generally amateur players are injured more often than professional players. For all players the injury risk during exercise is significantly higher than during a match. The exercise frequency showed a weak link to incidence rate only. For age, gende

Imaging of hip and groin injuries in athletes.

Proper function of the hip joint is imperative for athletes who participate in sporting activities that rely on utilization of the lower extremity; these primarily include kicking, running, and jumping activities. Sports-related injuries of the hip and groin are not frequent sources of disability in athletes; however, they may present a significant diagnostic dilemma, both from a clinical and radiological standpoint. Delay in diagnosis and treatment may result in undesired complications, such as premature degenerative disease, as well as time lost from athletic activities. Magnetic resonance (

MR imaging of sports injuries of the hip.

While MR imaging studies of the hip have been directed routinely toward the diagnosis of atraumatic osteonecrosis (ON), interest has increased in the use of MR imaging to diagnose other disorders of the hip and surrounding soft tissues, especially in athletic injuries. In addition to reviewing MR imaging technical considerations and image appearance, this article discusses applications of MR imaging to diagnosing pelvic and hip fractures, muscle contusion and strain, tendon injuries, acetabular labral tears, bursitis, and osteitis pubis and chronic symphyseal injury.

Vessel and nerve injuries complicating total hip arthroplasty.

Arterial and neural damage following total hip replacement is not common. Three cases are reported. The first patient had an isolated femoral nerve damage. The second case developed a false aneurysm arising from the external iliac artery 2 months after hip surgery and the third patient sustained a tear of the external iliac artery during the operation. The nerve and vessel injuries were caused by retractors. In both patients with arterial damages a transitory femoral nerve involvement occurred. The prognosis was good in all patients. Preventive measures are discussed.

Total Hip Arthroplasty After Gunshot-Related Hip Injuries: Case Series and Review of Literature.

High-velocity penetrating trauma to the hip can result in complex acetabular and femoral head fractures, often accompanied by vascular injuries and extensive soft tissue damage. Managing these injuries presents significant challenges due to contamination, bone loss, and the need for staged reconstruction. In 2 cases of severe ballistic and blast injuries, initial damage control measures included debridement, stabilization, and temporary antibiotic spacers to control infection risk. Delayed definitive total hip arthroplasty was performed after optimizing soft tissue and bony healing, leading to

The Unique Features of Pediatric Sports Injuries: The Hip.

Sports-related injuries of the hip and groin have demonstrated increasing prevalence in pediatric and adolescent athletes. Pediatric injuries require specific consideration of unique factors such as skeletal maturity, apophyseal vulnerability, physeal closure status, and growth-related changes in injury pattern. These injuries include a variety of conditions, including apophyseal injuries, hip dislocations, coxa saltans (snapping hip), femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS), and stress fractures. Injuries such as hip dislocation and high-risk femoral neck stress fracture require urgent d

The Management of Neurological Injuries Following Total Hip Arthroplasty.

➢ Neurological injury remains the most common reason for ligation following total hip arthroplasty.➢ The main risk factors for neurological injury following total hip arthroplasty are preexisting spinal pathology, revision surgery, complex hip anatomy, female sex, surgeon inexperience, and excessive limb lengthening.➢ Postoperative pelvic computed tomographic scans may be used to assess component positioning and identify any compressive hematomas. Magnetic resonance imaging with a metal artifact reduction protocol may be used to evaluate architectural changes in the affected nerve.➢ Electromyo

[Injuries to femoral vessels in fractures of the hip].

Injury to femoral vessels in trochanteric fractures is a rare but a severe complication. Most often it involves the profunda femoris artery, less often the (superficial) femoral artery. This injury may be caused by different mechanisms; most frequently by pressure of a sharp bone fragment (the lesser trochanter), the tip of protruding cortical screws (extramedullary implant) or the distal locking screw (Gamma nail). Less often it is caused by the drill bit or incorrectly placed elevators. Pressure of a sharp bone fragment or contact with protruding tips of screws results in a gradual erosion o

Sciatic nerve injuries associated with traumatic posterior hip dislocations.

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that patients transferred between hospitals with a dislocated hip have a greater incidence of sciatic nerve injury than patients who have their hip reduced at the first facility. One hundred six dislocated hips were included in this 12-year retrospective study. Sixty-nine hips were relocated at the first hospital and 36 patients were transferred with the hip still dislocated to LDS Hospital. There was a higher incidence of major sciatic nerve injury (complete sciatic or peroneal motor deficit) in patients transferred with the hip still dislocate

Magnetic resonance imaging of the hip: sports-related injuries.

Normal hip disorders do not account for a large proportion of exercise-related injuries, but they can pose a clinical dilemma because symptoms tend to be nonspecific. Conventional radiographs may demonstrate some causes of hip pain, such as stress fractures and degenerative joint disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the hip has proven valuable in the diagnosis of radiographically occult osseous abnormalities and periarticular soft-tissue disorders such as stress fractures, avulsion injuries, musculotendinous abnormalities, and bursitis. Conventional MRI has been less useful in the eval

Prevention of vascular injuries in revision total hip replacement.

Iliac-vessel injury from total hip arthroplasty is associated with hemorrhagic complications and an increased death rate. The authors identified seven patients who had severe medial displacement of the acetabular prosthesis and associated vascular injury to the iliac vessels after total hip replacement. One patient had two hip replacements. Preoperative findings included a pelvic mass (three hips), pelvic pain (eight), radiologic evidence of cement in the pelvis (three) and the acetabular prosthesis in the pelvis (eight), computed tomographic evidence of cement in the pelvis and proximity of t

Sports injuries in the pelvis and hip: diagnostic imaging.

We discuss the role of imaging techniques in examining the athletes with sports injuries involving the pelvis and the hip. Pelvis and hip pain is of difficult clinical clarification because of the various athletic injuries which may affect the bone or soft tissues at different anatomic sites. Moreover, the symptoms of pelvis and hip injuries are similar in most cases and they are often diffuse and atypical. Diagnostic imaging can play an essential role because treatment success depends on a correct diagnosis and these techniques can actually differentiate the most frequent causes of pelvis and

Prevention of hip and knee injuries in ballet dancers.

Hip problems form about 10% (7.0 to 14.2%) of most published series of ballet injuries. The abnormally large range of external rotation needed for a perfect turnout is primarily due to soft tissue adaptation, more readily achieved in the young dancer. Insufficient range of motion at the hip throws considerable stress on the other lower limb segments. The snapping hip syndrome is common (43.8% of hip problems), with about one-third associated with pain. A tight iliotibial band may contribute to this, and balanced flexibility requires special attention to abductor stretching. The external clicki
