Sea-blue histiocytes (SBH) and Gaucher-like cells are macrophages containing a pigment related to or identical with ceroid or lipofuscin. While an occasional cell may be found in the normal bone marrow, large numbers of SBH can be observed in various conditions mainly associated with increased cellular breakdown or with disturbances of lipoid metabolism. We have examined smears and/or sections of bone marrow and spleens of 722 patients with various hematological disorders. We describe a 56-year-old woman with histiocytic sarcoma involving the bone marrow. The neoplastic cells proliferated diffusely and showed occasional erythrophagocytosis. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for CD68, lysozyme, CD4 and CD163, but negative for B- and T-cell markers, S100 protein and epithelial markers. The patient received multi-agent chemotherapy and is living at 22 months after diagnosis without recurrence. Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign neoplasm but locally aggressive tumor that uncommonly involves the skull bone. We report a case of a 62-year-old male presented with increasing headache and diplopia. Investigations were suggestive of an expanding mass lesion of the clivus. Histopathology was suggestive of diagnosed with GCT with abundant histiocytes.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare but controversial hematopoietic neoplasm. In the past, malignancies have been misclassified as histiocytic tumors due to overlapping histologic features and inadequate phenotypic data. CD163, a recently characterized hemoglobin scavenger receptor, appears to be a 'specific' marker of histiocytic lineage and a promising diagnostic tool for evaluating histiocytic neoplasms. Immunoreactive lysozyme was readily detectable in canine histiocytic disorders including systemic histiocytosis, malignant histiocytosis and granulomatous panniculitis. We describe an 8 year old female with Weber-Christian disease who manifested erythema on her legs and an intermittent high fever. A wedge skin biopsy revealed lobular panniculitis and bean-bag cells, which were characteristic to cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis (CHP). However, she showed no evidence of liver dysfunction, hyperlipidemia, or coagulation disorders usually seen in CHP. Moreover, she responded well to oral corticosteroids therapy with resultant advanced subcutaneous fat atrophy.

The effectiveness of uncovering uterine disease by drawing special attention to increased histiocytes on Papanicolaou smears from postmenopausal patients was evaluated during a 22-month period. The authors studied the occurrence of Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA)-binding macrophage-histiocytes in paraffin-embedded tumor tissue of 38 patients with malignant lymphoma, small lymphocytic type, a tumor of low-grade malignancy.
