Pericarditis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum.

Sixteen patients with pericarditis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum were studied. Fourteen were less than 30 years old, and no patient had an underlying illness or was receiving immunosuppressive therapy. All patients experienced a flu-like prodromal illness lasting from 2 weeks to 4 months. Pneumonitis or hilar adenopathy, or both, was found in 12; pleural effusion, uncommon in primary pulmonary histoplasmosis, was found in seven patients. Pericardial fluid, pleural fluid and bone marrow cultures yielded no growth. All patients demonstrated a fourfold or greater change in complement-fixing an…

Histoplasma duboisii of the femoral bone.

Histoplasmosis due to Histoplasma duboisii is an emerging AIDS-defining opportunistic infection in HIV positive seen predominantly on the African continent between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Histoplasma duboisii is an invasive fungal organism with tropism for lymph nodes, skin and bones. The infection occurs more in patients with a CD4 count <50/mm3 and is usually dissemnnated Histoplasmosis due to Histoplasma duboisii is an emerging AIDS-defining opportunistic infection in HIV positive seen predominantly on the African continent between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. [Dimorphism and pathogenesis of Histoplasma capsulatum].

Dimorphism and pathogenesis of Hisdistoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungal pathogen with worldwide significance, which causes a broad spectrum of disease. In the saprophytic stage, it lives as a mycelial form consisting of hyphae bearing both macro and microconidia. Infection with H. capsulatum occurs by inhalation of microconidia (1-4 x 2-6 microm) or small mycelia fragments (5-8 microm) in the terminal bronchioles and alveoli of the lung. Inhaled conidia then convert into the yeast form that is responsible for the pathogenesis of histoplasmosis. As a soil fungus with no known requirement

Genomic epidemiology of Histoplasma in Africa.

Histoplasmosis, the disease caused by thermally dimorphic fungi in the genus Histoplasma, is usually associated with pulmonary involvement in healthy individuals and a disseminated syndrome in immunocompromised patients. Among African patients, lung disease is less commonly reported than skin, lymph node, or bone disease. Because different species or strains may be associated with different disease presentations and outcomes, understanding genetic and phenotypic variation in the genus Histoplasma is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment. We sequenced the genomes of 36 Histoplasma isol…

Such a fun-guy! Is this Candida or Histoplasma?

Histoplasmosis is a neglected mycosis with high mortality in immunocompromised individuals. The diagnosis can be delayed due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and similar morphology with other organisms. A high index of suspicion is required.

Infection of bats with Histoplasma species.

Histoplasma species infect humans and animals, notably bats. Histoplasma species are thermally dimorphic fungi existing in mycelial form in the natural environment and in yeast form in infected tissues. In this narrative literature review, we summarize the occurrence of Histoplasma spp. in different species of bat tissues (n = 49) and in soil admixed with bat guano where the species of bat dwelling nearby has been identified (an additional 18 species likely infected) to provide an up-to-date summary of data. Most positive isolations are from the Americas and Caribbean, with some studies from T…

A serendipitous isolate of Histoplasma capsulatum.

This is a report of an unexpected laboratory diagnosis of Histoplasma capsulatum. The fungus was isolated from an acute cellulitic lesion on the forearm of an elderly male patient with a functioning renal transplant. The patient resides within the environs of Brisbane and has not travelled outside Australia. We consider the isolation of H. capsulatum from a rare site in a patient resident in a non-endemic area indicative of a latent opportunistic infection in an immunocompromised patient.

Morphogenesis and pathogenicity of Histoplasma capsulatum.

The sulfhydryl blocking agent p-chloromercuriphenylsulfonic acid (PCMS) irreversibly inhibited the mycelium-to-yeast transitions of two virulent strains of Histoplasma capsulatum, G184A and G222B, when the temperature of incubation was raised to 37 degrees C, and the block persisted even after the cultures were washed free of PCMS. Instead of transforming to yeast cells, PCMS-treated mycelia continued to grow as mycelia at the elevated temperatures. A less virulent strain (Downs) was more temperature sensitive, but it showed a similar irreversible effect at 34 degrees C. Therefore, the myceliu…

Histoplasma capsulatum osteomyelitis in the cat.

Seven cats with osseous lesions as the primary manifestation of disseminated Histoplasma capsulatum infection were evaluated. The major clinical signs in these cats were related to the bony lesions and included lameness, bone pain, and soft tissue swelling of limbs and joints. Other clinical and pathologic findings were similar to previously reported forms of disseminated histoplasmosis in the cat. The radiographic appearance of the lesions was predominantly osteolytic; periosteal and endosteal new bone production was present in some cases. Infection occurred primarily in bones of the appendic…
