Housing Qualities, Spaces and Dispositions for Low-Income Families: Effects on Experiences of Wellbeing, Home and Belonging.

Low-income families often live in cramped and unsuitable conditions, and the housing qualities interplay significantly in processes of wellbeing, homing and belonging as housing can be an obstacle to the parents' transition to labour-market, lead to social exclusion and negatively affect children's schooling. The paper holds that housing quality includes important aspects of health, wellbeing and security, sociality, accessibility of services and facilities, space for leisure activities, central location, cultural heritage and aesthetics that support identity and place belonging. The study foc…

EFFECTS OF MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM INFECTION ON PREENING BEHAVIORS AND FEATHER QUALITY IN HOUSE FINCHES (HAEMORHOUS MEXICANUS).

Infections can have far-reaching sublethal effects on wildlife, including reduced maintenance of external structures. For many wildlife taxa, daily maintenance of external structures (termed preening in birds) is critical to fitness, but few studies have examined how infections alter such maintenance. Mycoplasma gallisepticum is a common pathogen in free-living House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), where it causes mycoplasmal conjunctivitis. Despite documented behavioral changes associated with M. gallisepticum infections in finches, no studies have examined how preening behavior may change wi

The effect of sex and slaughter age on the quality of the breast muscle (Pectoralis major) in pheasants housed in aviaries.

The aim of the present study was to compare the proximate composition, fatty acid and amino acid profiles, and physicochemical properties of the breast (Pectoralis major, PM) muscle in female and male pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) raised in aviaries on a farm and slaughtered at 21, 23, and 25 weeks of age (10 females - hens and 10 males - roosters per age group). Both sex and slaughter age had a significant effect on the quality of the PM muscle. However, age influenced a higher number of the analyzed quality attributes. The PM muscle of female pheasants had lower (P ≤ 0.05) collagen content

The relationship between characteristics of supported housing and the quality of life of older adults with severe mental illness.

This study examined whether group living (as opposed to single living), staff availability and degree of personal freedom are associated with the quality of life of older adults with severe mental illness. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 18 supported living programmes in residential homes for the elderly that differed in terms of these three characteristics. The study included 35 patients with a psychotic disorder and 38 with an anxiety or mood disorder. Quality of life was assessed with the Philadelphia Geriatric Centre Morale Scale (PGCMS) and the Manchester Short Assessment of Qu

Access to pasture in an outdoor housing system affects welfare indicators and improves rooster sperm quality in two native Mediterranean breeds.

The aim of the present work was to examine the influence of access to pasture in an outdoor housing system on rooster sperm quality and response to cryopreservation and to examine the possible correlation between values for sperm quality variables and welfare indicators. Two groups of Black-barred Andaluza and Red-barred Vasca roosters were housed in an outdoor system, with one group given daily access to a grazing area containing plant species that typically grow on uncultivated Mediterranean land. Semen was collected once per week from each group, and the following sperm quality variables we

Comparative assessment of minerals, heavy metal content and microbiological quality of microalgae cultivated with broiler house exhaust air.

Microalgae present a sustainable solution for food and feed production due to their rich nutrient content while mitigating environmental impacts from conventional agriculture. However, their use in animal nutrition requires compliance with safety and nutritional standards. This study evaluated trace metals, heavy metals, and microbiological quality in three microalgae species (Ankistrodesmus sp., Scenedesmus sp., and Synechococcaceae) cultivated in three media (BBM, nitrogen-free BBM, and DI-water) using broiler house exhaust air. The algal biomass were analyzed for mineral and heavy metal by

Cost-effective in-house-made whole blood materials for internal quality control in clinical flow cytometry analysis.

Internal quality control (IQC) is essential for ensuring the accuracy of results in clinical trials. However, there is a significant shortage of commercial quality control materials for IQC in flow cytometry. This study aimed to develop cost-effective in-house-made whole blood materials from clinically discarded samples to serve as IQC in clinical flow cytometry analysis. Discarded clinical whole blood samples were collected to prepare red blood cell (RBC) suspensions through density centrifugation. White blood cell (WBC) suspensions were prepared using made in-house (MiH) lysing buffer, follo

Interior design in cancer care: simple structural solutions in storey houses improve patients' quality of life, mood and performance.

Storey duplex houses are today one of the fastest growing housing market. The key of success is that this kind of house architecture presents esthetic and practical advantages in the average family daily life, but its narrow indoor staircase connecting the ground floor (floor of family activities) to the "bedroom floor" may constitute a potential detriment for the care and quality of life of patients with advanced cancer. Due to cancer cachexia, cancer pain and asthenia, the patients' incapacity to use narrow stairs will become soon an impassable barrier. Alone at the bedroom floor in solitude

Typology of changes in quality of life over 12 months among currently or formerly homeless individuals using different housing services in Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: In health and social service evaluations, including research on homelessness, quality of Life (QOL) is often used as a key indicator of well-being among service users. However, no typology has been developed on changes in QOL over a 12-month period for a heterogenous sample of homeless individuals. METHODS: Cluster analysis was employed to identify a typology of change in QOL for 270 currently or formerly homeless individuals using emergency shelters, temporary housing (TH) and permanent housing (PH) services in Quebec (Canada). Participant interviews were conducted at baseline an

Health-related quality of life and related factors among chronically homeless adults living in different permanent supportive housing models: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an effective intervention to improve residential stability and reduce the utilization of costlier healthcare services for the chronically homeless. However, there has been little focus on health-related quality of life (HRQL) once they enter PSH, and the potential influence of other factors including the PSH model. Study results can shed light on the HRQL of the PSH population and inform strategies to improve PSH program effectiveness in this area. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, survey methods were used to assess the HRQL of PSH resident

A study of the factors that affect health-related quality of life among residents of low-income housing in Mott Haven in the Bronx, NY.

BACKGROUND: New York City has recorded a historically low supply of housing affecting disproportionally low-resourced areas, including the Bronx. Affordable housing buildings are being built, however, little is known about the quality of life of residents living in affordable housing, nor what the impact of housing is on their quality of life or health. METHODS: A pilot cross sectional study without a comparison group was conducted, to characterize the health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) of residents from an affordable housing development located in Mott Haven, in the South East area of th

["My life will be much better than before": a qualitative study on the relationship between renewal of public housing, quality of life, and health].

The objective was to understand the link between housing, health and quality of life in a context of social housing regeneration, through the experiences and perceptions of its inhabitants, exploring the mechanisms that sustain this link before regeneration, and those elements derived from housing regeneration that result in improvements in quality of life and potentially in health. Between 1980 and the 2000s, Chile faced a massive quantitative housing deficit through a policy that delivered more than 120,000 low-cost social housing apartments. Today, thousands present severe habitability prob
