The stability of amino acids and the availability of acid from total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions containing hydrochloric acid were studied. Hydrochloric acid in the concentrations of 40 (TPN 1), 60 (TPN 2), and 100 (TPN 3) meq/liter was added to TPN solutions (4.25% amino acids, 25% dextrose monohydrate) containing various electrolytes (TPN control). Amino acid concentrations were determined from one sample of each solution using a Technicon Automatic Amino Acid Analyzer. Samples were analyzed 24 hours after mixing and compared with the TPN control at 24 hours. Tryptophan was assayed …

A method for the assessment and management of factors both causing and maintaining a primary metabolic alkalosis is presented. During a 2-year period 65 patients with metabolic alkalosis were treated with saline and potassium chloride infusions. In four patients the alkalosis was refractory and required additional therapy. An infusion of hydrochloric acid 0.12-0.24 mol/litre through a central venous line corrected the alkalosis without causing haemolysis or tissue necrosis. The maximum rate of infusion suggested is 0.2 mmol H+-kg body wt-1-h-1.

OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience of dealing with patients admitted as emergencies after massive ingestion of hydrochloric acid, and to find out the most important prognostic factors.
DESIGN: Retrospective review.
SETTING: Teaching hospital, Spain.
SUBJECTS: 21 patients with massive necrosis of the upper gastrointestinal tract after ingestion of acid who presented during the past 14 years (November 1984-March 1998).
INTERVENTIONS: All patients were operated on immediately, 17 without an endoscopic examination. In all cases, the laparotomy showed various degrees of damage to the intra-a…

A concentrated hydrochloric acid (1 N) infusion was utilized for treatment on 35 occasions of metabolic alkalosis in 24 patients. The amount of hydrochloric acid to be infused was calculated from total base excess. To avoid over-correction, two thirds of the calculated dosage of hydrochloric acid only was infused. 1 N hydrochloric acid solution was infused at a speed of 1 mEq/min through a roentgenographically confirmed central venous line. Metabolic alkalosis was successfully treated in all instances without any complication. However, increased respiratory stimulation was not demonstrated in …

Severe metabolic alkalosis is often treated by infusion of arginine-HCl. Since we know that this substance leads to a supplemental increase of intracellular pH and fails to reduce intracellular bicarbonate concentration we use HCl for correction of this disturbance of acid-base equilibrium. 18 intensive-care patients with severe metabolic alkalosis were treated with an infusion of 0.2 m HCl. While base excess and sodium decreased significantly, chloride increased slightly. Arterial plasma pH, potassium, Hb, Hk, pCO2, pO2, and SO2 remained unchanged. Aerogels are extremely porous materials with large pore volumes and low bulk densities. Their unique structure imparts extraordinary properties and wide applications. The synthesis of pyrogallol-formaldehyde xerogels has been reported using HClO4 as a catalyst, but according to the literature review the synthesis of aerogels of these materials has not been documented. In the present work, the data for the synthesis of aerogels pyrogallol-formaldehyde are presented using oxalic acid and hydrochloric acid as catalysts. Also includes the data of the characterization of these materials by Infrared…

RATIONALE: Electrocardiography (ECG) was used to diagnose acute coronary syndrome, but many other diseases may also result in ST segment change. We report one case of ingested hydrochloric acid present with ST segment elevation in the ECG. However, subsequent coronary angiography did not reveal significant coronary occlusion.
PATIENT CONCERNS: An 83-year-old female was transferred to our emergency department (ED) from the branch hospital due to ingestion of toilet bowl cleaner containing 9.5% hydrochloric acid. She complained about chest pain and 12-lead ECG showed ST segment elevation at lea…

Skin reactions to 40% nonanoic acid in propanol (NON) and to 4% hydrochloric acid were evaluated by image analysis of 20 MHz B scan recordings (Dermascan C, Cortex Technology). 18 women, aged 18 to 45, were patch tested with 24-h application time, and clinical and instrumental evaluations were performed at the beginning of the experiment, and 24 and 48 h after patch testing. To check possible regional variations in reactivity to NON and HCl, both substances were applied 2 x on the same forearm. As control tests, saline solution, propanol and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) 3% were applied. Echogra…

The effects of hydrochloric acid (HCl) administration were studied in 15 critically ill patients whose metabolic alkalosis caused a significant alkalemia (pH 7.50 to 7.58) unresponsive to sodium and potassium chloride administration. Arterial pH and bicarbonate and chloride concentrations normalized after a 6- to 12-h mean infusion of 200 +/- 54 mmol of .25 N HCl. There were no deleterious vascular, hematologic, or metabolic side-effects. HCl administration was associated with an increase in mean PaO2 from 94 +/- 21 to 121 +/- 31 torr (p less than .001). This increase was comparable in patient…

Accidental ingestion of corrosive household substances can lead to serious injuries in young children. While damage to the oesophagus is most common, injuries affecting the stomach, especially the pylorus, are rare and can be easily missed. We describe a toddler who developed persistent vomiting after swallowing a hydrochloric acid-based bathroom cleaner. Investigations revealed complete blockage at the gastric outlet due to scarring. She was successfully treated with surgery. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and timely intervention, especially when the child continues …

The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effect of insect tea on HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in ICR mice. The serum levels of vasoactive intestinal peptide, substance P, somatostatin, motilin and endothelin-1 in mice were assessed using commercial kits and gastric tissues of superoxide dismutase (SOD, nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined using western blot analysis Insect tea significantly reduced HCl/ethanol-induced gastric juice secretion and increased the pH of gastric juice (P<0.05). Insect tea treatment signfiicantly increased vasoactive

The acid resistance of TiF4-treated enamel was investigated to establish a possible treatment modality for endogenous dental erosion. Enamel … concluded that topical TiF4 application may be effective in prevention of dental erosion caused by hydrochloric acid from the stomach in patients with frequent vomiting or gastroesophageal reflux.
