Hydrological droughts reduce carbon dioxide emission from the Yangtze River networks.

River networks release significant amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere via gas exchanges at water-air interface, profoundly affecting the global carbon cycle. Hydrological drought, characterized by negative anomalies in river discharge, can affect the transport and decomposition of organic matter, thereby significantly impacting riverine CO2 emissions. However, the extent to which hydrological droughts affect CO2 emission fluxes remains unanswered. In this study, we developed a framework to quantify the impact of hydrological droughts on CO2 emissions from the Yangtze River net

Moderate Hydrological Droughts Maximized CO2 Sink in China's Largest Floodplain Lake.

Carbon dynamics in floodplain lakes are critical to gaining a full understanding of the global carbon budget. Here, we constructed a spatially explicit carbon dioxide (CO2) flux data set covering 2003-2022 for China's largest floodplain lake (R2 = 0.86, RMSE = 0.49 gC m-2 d-1). The annual fluxes varied from 52.57 ± 4.71 gC m-2 in 2010 to -186.36 ± 7.27 gC m-2 in 2011. Temporal variations in CO2 flux were primarily driven by changes in the hydrological regime and wetland vegetation conditions. Specifically, water rise onset and recession onset emerged as the two most influential factors. A 10-d

Hydrologic and water quality performance of a subsurface gravel wetland treating stormwater runoff.

Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. They are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer that influences pollutant removal processes. While they have been widely applied to treat wastewater, our understanding of their efficiency in treating stormwater with variable pollutant inputs is limited. To fill this gap, this study monitored the flow and water quality (total suspend

Biochar granulation and particle size influence hydrological performance of green roof substrates.

Green roofs are increasingly implemented in cities to improve stormwater management and provide additional ecosystem services. Biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from pyrolyzed biomass, has emerged as a promising substrate additive to improve hydrological performance of green roofs. Biochar granulation and particle size modification have been suggested as effective approaches to mitigate erosion losses but research on the effects of biochar post-processing on hydrological performance remains scarce, and data on fundamental hydraulic properties of biochar-amended green roof substrates is e

How can hydrological connectivity inform catchment scale stormwater flood management?

Landscape-based stormwater solutions can attenuate runoff locally, yet translating hydrological benefits into catchment-scale flood mitigation often remains difficult. This shortfall reflects a current site-focused paradigm that overlooks the role of hydrological connectivity (HC) in organising flood inundation. HC has long informed process understanding in fluvial hydrology, but it has been less frequently operationalised as a spatial diagnostic for urban stormwater flooding. This study applies the spatially explicit, event-aware Index of Hydrological Connectivity (IHC) to diagnose connectivi…

Understanding policy alignment in addressing hydrological hazards in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria.

Combating climate change, flood risk, managing land use, and developmental change need cohesive policy action. Analysing policies is essential to assess whether there is a coherent approach where various sectors support each other, or at least do not conflict. This study analyses policy documents addressing hydrological hazards in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria using Qualitative Document Analysis, content analysis, keyword analysis and frequency counts. These insights were used to examine: 1) the types of hydrological hazards and their drivers recognised in six national policy documents acros

Integrating hydrological and economic assessments of soil infiltration enhancement for urban flood resilience.

Urban flooding, exacerbated by climate change and the expansion of impervious surfaces, poses growing risks to sustainable urban development … diminishing marginal returns, being justifiable only under eco-resilience priorities. The proposed hydrology-economy framework supports tiered, context-sensitive design of infiltration measures, offering a transferable tool for data-driven sponge city planning.

Survey on the resolution and accuracy of input data validity for SWAT-based hydrological models.

This review was conducted to highlight the most influential factors and specify the trends reducing uncertainty and increasing the accuracy of soil and water assessment tool (SWAT)-based hydrological models. Although the resolution of input data on the results of SWAT-based hydrological models has been extensively determined. There is still a gap in providing comprehensive review framework to be emerged for identifying the impact of the data resolution and accuracy. The factors taken into consideration in this study were the impact of digital elevation model (DEM) resolution, soil data resolut

Effects of hydrologic regimes on the loading and spatiotemporal variation of mercury in the microtidal river estuary.

The potential effect of hydrological conditions on distribution and loadings of Hg species was investigated in the microtidal Hyeongsan River Estuary (HRE). Dissolved Hg (DHg) and dissolved methylmercury (DMeHg) from the creek receiving industrial wastes were effectively settled to sediment during the post-typhoon period, while persistent input from the Hg-contaminated creek without settling was observed during the dry periods. The event-based mean approach was applied to explore the hydrological effects on the annual flux of Hg. The largest inputs of DHg and particulate Hg (PHg) were found in

Combined effects of urban pollution and hydrological stress on ecosystem functions of Mediterranean streams.

Urban pollution and hydrological stress are common stressors of stream ecosystems, but their combined effects on ecosystem functioning are s … ncentration of pharmaceutically active compounds, followed by other chemical characteristics and by hydrology. The results point to the need to further improve sewage treatment, especially as climate change will stress riverine organisms and reduce the dilution capacity of the receiving streams.

The role of hydrological conditions for riverine Hg species transport in the Idrija mining area.

Estimation of mercury (Hg) species fluxes in Hg contaminated rivers is crucial to predict Hg methylation in connected sediment sinks. Cinnabar (HgS) was mined and roasted for ∼500 years in the Idrija mining area, Slovenia, which is drained by the Idrijca River to the Gulf of Trieste (GT), Italy. Mining residues dumped into the Idrijca River caused high proportions of cinnabar in sediments, whereas soils containing high proportions of natural organic matter bound to Hg (NOM-Hg) are attributed to atmospheric Hg deposition. Previous calculations of Hg fluxes have been based on the erosion of cinn

Effects of vegetation type and seasonal hydrology on soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in the Dianchi Lake ecological buffer zone.

Ecological buffer zones play an important role in nutrient retention and carbon sequestration, but variation in soil carbon and nitrogen stocks among different plot types and between dry and rainy season remains insufficiently understood. Soil samples were collected from three plot types in the Dianchi Lake ecological buffer zone: Populus canadensis plots, Taxodium 'Zhongshanshan' plots, and flooded Taxodium 'Zhongshanshan' plots. Samples were taken at five depths, namely 0-15, 15-30, 30-50, 50-70, and 70-100 cm, during dry and rainy season. Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), bulk

An explainable and causally informed machine learning framework for hydrological drought transitions, propagation, and vulnerability.

Hydrological droughts (HDs) pose increasing challenges to water-system management, yet the processes governing their wet-dry transitions, propagation delays, and resulting vulnerability remain poorly resolved. Here, we developed an explainable and causally informed machine-learning (ECML) framework to distinguish basin-wide attribution from region-specific relationships and applied it to the monsoon-influenced Yuan-Red River Basin. Meteorological predictors accounted for 63.97% of the total predictive attribution to HD variability, led by precipitation of 36.81%, which exhibited a nonlinear pr

Contaminant covariation as a potential indicator of hydrological connectivity in an urban canal-river system, Thailand.

Urban canals frequently convey untreated wastewater to receiving rivers, but in the absence of flow data, tracing this contamination remains a major obstacle for regulatory agencies. To test whether contaminant-mixture structure can serve as a hydrological tracer, we conducted twelve monthly synoptic campaigns across nine stations in the Mae Kha Canal-Ping River system (northern Thailand). Canal stations exhibited a robust, covarying wastewater fingerprint-dominated by ace-sulfame, caffeine, and gemfibrozil-that was entirely absent from the upstream river. This canal signal decayed predictably

Climatic and Hydrological Changes Drive Contemporary Fire Regime Transitions in the World's Largest Wetland.

Tropical wetlands have historically been resilient to fire, but ongoing climate and hydrological changes are undermining this stability. Here, we provide robust multi-decadal evidence (1985-2024) of structural changes in the contemporary fire regime of the Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, associated with hydroclimatic disruption. We investigated changes in burned area, mean fire size, and fire seasonality using hydrological, climatic, and fuel-condition predictors. To identify the major drivers of fire dynamics, we applied trend analyses and Elastic Net models across multiple temporal an

Microbially mediated Fe-N coupled cycling at different hydrological regimes in riparian wetland.

Although the significance of the coupled Fe- and N- cycling processes on biogeochemical transformation in riparian wetlands is well-known, the regulation associated with the changes on the microbiotas during different hydrological regimes remains unclear. This study performed field investigations on the bacterial community compositions (BCC) and specific genera associated to Fe- and N- cycling in the rhizosphere soil and sediments in a riparian wetland in Poyang lake, China. The predominant phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae from all the samples remarkably decreased after lon
