A comprehensive review of factors affecting growth and secondary metabolites in hydroponically grown medicinal plants.

Optimizing environmental factors can significantly increase the growth and secondary metabolite synthesis of hydroponically grown medicinal plants. This approach can help increase the quality and quantity of pharmacologically important metabolites to enhance therapeutic needs. Medicinal plants are key therapeutic sources for treating various ailments. The increasing demand for medicinal plants has resulted in the overharvesting of these plants in their natural habitat, which can lead to their extinction in the future. Soil-based cultivation faces challenges, such as a lack of arable land, dras

THE PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF SELENIUM-ENRICHED HYDROPONIC RADISH ON PARACETAMOL-INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE IN RATS.

Paracetamol-induced liver toxicity in rats is a well-studied model for liver damage. The present study investigates the morphological changes in hepatic blood vessels and the protective effects of hydroponically grown Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) pretreatment in rats with paracetamol-induced liver damage. The results indicate significant alterations in vascular morphology and liver enzyme levels, specifically alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which serve as indicators of hepatotoxicity. The findings suggest that hydroponic Radish may mitigate the adverse effe

The use of biostimulants as a key to sustainable hydroponic lettuce farming under saline water stress.

BACKROUND: The utilization of high-quality water in agriculture is increasingly constrained by climate change, affecting availability, quality, and distribution due to altered precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, extreme weather events, and rising salinity levels. Salinity significantly challenges salt-sensitive vegetables like lettuce, particularly in a greenhouse. Hydroponics water quality ensures nutrient solution stability, enhances nutrient uptake, prevents contamination, regulates pH and electrical conductivity, and maintains system components. This study aimed to mitigate salt…

Fate of carbamazepine and its effect on physiological characteristics of wetland plant species in the hydroponic system.

Plants play a cardinal role in removing various pollutants through the synergistic interaction with filling materials and microbes of constructed wetlands (CWs). However, the information regarding the selection of plant species to remove pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) is not adequate. The present study attempted to select an appropriate plant species for CWs, considering their characteristics and physiological response to PhACs. In this regard, batch hydroponics studies were carried out to assess the removal, fate, and antioxidative response of carbamazepine (CBZ) in four wetland pl…

Inclusion of endophytes in hydroponic cultivation of basils enhances hydroxycinnamic acid levels and antioxidant capacity.

The lack of microorganisms in soil-less hydroponic farming can limit the accumulation of nutrients and secondary metabolites. This work was then aimed for the first time, to identify and quantify polyphenols, determine antioxidant properties of hydroponically grown basils, and assess the effects of endophytic bacteria. Data showed that of the eleven endophytes investigated, five increased (p < 0.05) total phenolic contents to 4.5 ± 0.3-5.8 ± 1.2 mg GAE/g F.W. relative to 3.1 ± 0.5 mg GAE/g for the control basils. The increase was due to the enhanced biosynthesis of hydroxycinnamic acid derivat

Hydroponic potato production on nutrients derived from anaerobically-processed potato plant residues.

Bioregenerative methods are being developed for recycling plant minerals from harvested inedible biomass as part of NASA's Advanced Life Support (ALS) research. Anaerobic processing produces secondary metabolites, a food source for yeast production, while providing a source of water soluble nutrients for plant growth. Since NH4-N is the nitrogen product, processing the effluent through a nitrification reactor was used to convert this to NO3-N, a more acceptable form for plants. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Norland plants were used to test the effects of anaerobically-produced effluent aft

Hydroponic materials improve organic micropollutant removal in vertical flow constructed wetlands treating wastewater.

Unconventional substrata like activated carbon or clay beads can enhance micropollutant removal in constructed wetlands. However, hydroponic materials widely used in horticulture have not yet been investigated for their potential to remove micropollutants. In addition, potential effect of plant species other than reeds on micropollutant removal has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, a nature-based, post-treatment technology called improved vertical flow constructed wetlands (CW) with hydroponic (H) materials (CWH) was designed by employing cocopeat and mineral with ornamental plant

Natural humification-inspired bioenzymatic catalysis drives hydroponic root-zone decontamination and carbon sequestration.

Endocrine disruptors bioaccumulate along food chains, impairing reproductive function in wildlife and elevating chronic disease risk in humans. Natural humification-inspired bioenzymatic catalysis (NH-IBC) can interrupt pollutant transfer from crops to higher trophic levels, but its efficacy in hydroponic root-zone decontamination and carbon sequestration remains poorly characterized. Here, we demonstrated that NH-IBC enhanced the polymerization and humification of dissolved organic carbon in the hydroponic root-zones of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), resulting in a 17.3-fold increase in the di
