Venoms from 20 species of stinging Hymenoptera, including nine species of ants and nine species of social wasps, were quantitatively analyzed for the following enzymic activities: phospholipase A, hyaluronidase, lipase, esterase, protease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and phosphodiesterase. Phospholipase and hyaluronidase were present in all the venoms, with activity levels generally higher among the wasps than the ants (P less than 0.05). Lipase was present in high activity in several social wasp venoms and one ant venom, in low levels in two other ant venoms and absent from four te

West Bengal, India, is inhabited by abundance and variety of insects that triggers sensitization in some humans to inhalant allergens and/or insect stings/venoms. Lack of research on this topic prevented accurate diagnosis and proper follow-up treatments to patients suffering from insect-induced allergies. The aim of our study was to identify the allergy-causing insects and evaluate resulting sensitization among a study population in West Bengal, India. The skin prick test (SPT) evaluated sensitivity of 450 patients who sought treatment at the Allergy and Asthma Research Center from July 2017

Melittobia acasta Walker is one among other hymenopterous parasitoids of Megachile rotundata F. Commercial M. rotundata populations are employed to pollinate North American alfalfa for seed production. This wasp can be prolific when using M. rotundata as a host and can reduce or destroy bee stocks. Hundreds of M. acasta female offspring can develop in a single M. rotundata cell and disperse to infest other cells, producing thousands of more parasitoids. In this study, we determined (i) upon what bee life stages M. acasta females choose to lay eggs and if those eggs ultimately become adults and

PiggyBac (PB) transposons, such as the canonical transposon from Trichoplusia ni and the more recently discovered Mage from Lepidoptera, are "cut-and-paste" mobile genetic elements widely harnessed as non-viral vector systems for gene therapy and transgenesis. Despite the ecological and economic significance of the insect order Hymenoptera, the evolutionary history and functional diversity of PB transposons within this group remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic investigation of PB transposons across 287 hymenopteran species. Our analysis revealed a widespre

The study of ant morphology is advancing through parallel insights provided by phylogenomics-which provides a statistically robust basis for comparison and evolutionary inference-and phenomics via the application of microcomputed tomography (µ-CT) for the efficient and precise documentation of anatomy. The information provided by µ-CT is complex and rich, allowing for the quantification of geometry and biomechanically relevant variables, as well as comparative morphology via 3D rendering. Recently, the complete musculature of the thorax, propodeum, and legs was documented for the first time in

BACKGROUND: Insect venom is the second most common cause of anaphylaxis outside of medical encounters. Stings cause over 20% of all anaphylactic deaths and 7% of anaphylaxis in children. To date, there have been no longitudinal studies of insect sting events or allergy in preschool children.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal nested observational study in the BASELINE Birth Cohort Study (n = 2137). Sting-related questions were asked at 6 and 12 months and 2 and 5 years. Skin prick testing (SPT) was performed at 2 and 5 years. SpIgE testing was performed on selected cases at 2 years.

The cosmopolitan genus Anagrus Haliday is one of the largest in Mymaridae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), and includes very common egg parasitoids, mostly of leafhoppers. The smallest species (body length: 0.4-0.6 mm) are found in the atomus species group. This group at present includes about 20 species worldwide. Anagrus atomus (Linnaeus) is among the most common species in the Palaearctic region. Other populations very similar in morphology and biology to this species are also widespread and associated with several leafhoppers infesting wild and cultivated plants (Matteucig & Viggiani 2008). BACKGROUND: Treatment failure during venom immunotherapy (VIT) may be associated with a variety of risk factors, of which the relative importance is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate the association of baseline serum tryptase concentration (BTC), mastocytosis in the skin (MIS) and of other parameters with the frequency of objective systemic reactions during in-hospital sting challenge (SC).
METHODS: In this observational retrospective study, we enrolled 1532 patients (1609 cases due to double SC) with established honeybee or vespid venom allergy who had undergone VIT and a subseque

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological features of anaphylactic reactions to hymenoptera stings, with a case-history analysis according to severity.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: We conducted an observational descriptive study of patients aged between 10 and 80 years who suffered a systemic reaction after hymenoptera sting. All of them showed specific serum IgE to venoms from Apis, Vespula and/or Polistes. A questionnaire including history of atopy, past reactions and characteristics of the reaction, was performed by individual interview. A

In our country approximately forty people die every year from anaphylaxis caused by hymenoptera stings. Between 1988 and 1996, 48 patients, who had experienced a systemic reaction to hymenoptera sting and were proved to have specific IgE antibodies to wasp, yellow or both (RAST score > or = 2), received rush immunotherapy (RIT) using venom extracts in our hospital. Fifteen patients had re-sting after RIT. Fourteen out of the 15 patients showed only local reaction to the hymenoptera re-sting and one patient had mild generalized symptoms. Although one patient showed mild generalized uriticaria d

To investigate the risk of life-threatening reactions to future stings, we sequentially challenged 113 children (aged 2 to 17 years) allergic to insect stings with a sting by the relevant insect. The time interval between the challenges varied from 2 to 6 weeks. The history of the index stings was a large local reaction (LR) in 16% and a systemic reaction (SR) in 84% of the test subjects. On the first challenge, 76% had a normal LR, 11% a large LR, and 13% an SR. On the second challenge, 78% of the children had a normal LR, 5% a large LR, and 17% an SR. Thirty-nine of the untreated children we

The incidence of reactions to insect bites both local (erythema, pemphigus, oedema, itching) and systemic (urticaria, angioedema, anaphylactic shock) in Borgomanero (NO) National Health Clinic 54 was assessed. The high incidence of medical treatments for this pathology encountered reflects the fact that in the summer and in a rural area a great many people are exposed to this type of emergency. The importance of careful diagnosis (anamnesis, skin allergy tests, RAST is emphasised as a means of identifying cases at allergic risk and providing the appropriate immunotherapy.

Hymenoptera venom allergy is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction following a honeybee, vespid, or ant sting. Systemic-allergic sting reactions have been reported in up to 7.5% of adults and up to 3.4% of children. They can be mild and restricted to the skin or moderate to severe with a risk of life-threatening anaphylaxis. Patients should carry an emergency kit containing an adrenaline autoinjector, H1 -antihistamines, and corticosteroids depending on the severity of their previous sting reaction(s). The only treatment to prevent further systemic sting reactions is venom immunothe

Current guidelines for venom immunotherapy suggest that immunotherapy should be performed only in patients with IgE mediated systemic reactions. However, opinions on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with systemic reactions in the absence of IgE are quite varied. We present a patient with a history of atypical systemic reactions after a bee sting. Skin tests and specific IgE for bee venom were negative. We performed a sting provocation test in order to characterize the nature and mechanism of reaction. The provocation test was positive and mast cell activation was proved by tryptase elev

Introduction: Venom immunotherapy (VIT) is an effective treatment for Hymenoptera venom allergy. The occurrence of severe reactions (SRs) to VIT, although infrequent, hampers the achievement of tolerance to insect stings. Risk factors for such reactions include allergy to honeybee venom, concomitant mast cell disorders, and the build-up phase of VIT. A role for omalizumab has come forward in recent years. Areas covered: This article reviews the available literature on the efficacy of omalizumab in preventing SRs and allowing the attainment of VIT maintenance doses. Pre- and co-treatments with

Up to 7% of adult patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy may suffer from a clonal mast cell disease. Patients with clonal mast cell disease and Hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis are commonly males, without skin lesions, and anaphylaxis is characterized by hypotension and syncope in the absence of urticaria and angioedema. A normal value of tryptase does not exclude a mastocytosis. The diagnosis of a mast cell disease leads to several therapeutic consequences concerning the treatment of Hymenoptera venom allergy as matter of fact these patients have to undergo long-life venom immunotherapy, to pre

In this review, the Hymenoptera Allergy Committee of the SEAIC analyzes the most recent scientific literature addressing problems related to the diagnosis of hymenoptera allergy and to management of venom immunotherapy. Molecular diagnosis and molecular risk profiles are the key areas addressed. The appearance of new species of hymenoptera that are potentially allergenic in Spain and the associated diagnostic and therapeutic problems are also described. Finally, we analyze the issue of mast cell activation syndrome closely related to hymenoptera allergy, which has become a new diagnostic chall

BACKGROUND: Envenomation by a large number of hymenopterans can cause significant morbidity and mortality due to venom load. We present the first case of massive Hymenoptera envenomation by native US Hymenoptera.
CASE: A 3-year-old boy and his family were hiking in Oregon and were attacked by yellow jackets. On emergency department arrival, the child was uncomfortable and vomiting. Vital signs were normal; physical examination showed more than 90 punctate lesions on the head and neck, and 30 below the neck without urticaria. Initial laboratory values were normal except for a white blood cell
