Growth in open-source hardware designs combined with the decreasing cost of high-quality 3D printers have supported a resurgence of in-house custom lab equipment development. Herein, we describe a low-cost (< $400), open-source CO2 incubator. The system is comprised of a Raspberry Pi computer connected to a 3D printer controller board that has controls for a CO2 sensor, solenoid valve, heater, and thermistors. Relapse to drug use is often preceded by drug craving. Clinical observations in the 1980s led clinical investigators to postulate that cue-induced cocaine craving may increase during abstinence. Heliox (Hx) gas has been shown to improve pulmonary function in infants, but methods for its delivery are invasive and problematic. To this end, we modified an Isolette (Hill-Rom Air-Shields) infant incubator (Hxl) to deliver Hx respiratory gas mixtures noninvasively while providing thermal stability for neonatal care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Incubation is the process by which life events influence the onset of psychiatric disorder after an appreciable delay. It has long been recognised clinically. In this paper we use data from the Camberwell Collaborative Depression Study to see whether incubation effects can be demonstrated in depressive illness. The possible effects of incubator noise on the hearing of premature babies have long been debated. The type of hearing loss found in 12 low-birthweight children was examined; and the variable noise level in regularly used incubators was measured.
