OBJECTIVES: Inhalation toxicities of indium-tin oxide (ITO) and indium oxide (IO) in mice were characterized in comparison with those previously reported in rats.
METHODS: B6C3F(1) mice of both sexes were exposed by inhalation to ITO or IO aerosol for 6 h/day, 5 day/wk for 2 wk at 0, 0.1, 1, 10 or 100 mg/m(3) or 13 wk at 0, 0.1or 1 mg/m(3).

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to clarify the chronic toxicological effects of indium-tin oxide (ITO) and indium oxide (In(2)O(3)) on laboratory animals.
METHODS: Male Syrian golden hamsters were intratracheally administered 3 mg/kg or 6 mg/kg of ITO particles, or 2.7 mg/kg or 5.4 mg/kg of In(2)O(3) particles, containing 2.2 mg/kg or 4.5 mg/kg of indium, twice a week, for 8 wk. Control hamsters were given vehicle of distilled water only. The hamsters were euthanized serially up to 78 wk after the final instillation and the toxicological effects were determined.

The electrochemical behaviour and deposition of indium in electrolytes composed of 0.4 mol dm-3 In(Tf2N)3 and 0.4 mol dm-3 InCl3 in the solvents 1,2-dimethoxyethane and poly(ethylene glycol) (average molecular mass of 0.400 kg mol-1, PEG400) was investigated. Indium(i) was identified as the intermediate species that disproportionated to indium(iii) and indium(0) nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles was verified by TEM analysis. SEM analysis showed that deposits obtained at room temperature from 1,2-dimethoxyethane were rough, while spherical structures were formed in PEG400 at 160 °C.

Sixty-eight patients with clinically suspected chronic osteomyelitis were studied with [111In]chloride. Fifty-four images were categorized as true positive; seven were categorized as true negative. Indium-mediated radical reactions proceed in the absence of toxic tin hydride, providing a new carbon-carbon bond-forming method in aqueous media. Herein, the results of experiments to probe the utility of indium as a radical initiator in reactions in aqueous media are reported. The indium-mediated tandem reactions also proceed smoothly via two carbon-carbon bond-forming processes for the preparation of various types of functionalized cyclic compounds.
