Species Diversity of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in Dental Unit Waterlines: Implications for Infection Control and Clinical Practice.

BACKGROUND: Dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) are prone to microbial biofilm formation and serve as reservoirs for opportunistic nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) that pose infection risks in dental settings. Regional data on the diversity of NTM species in DUWLs, particularly in Iran, remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and species diversity of potentially pathogenic NTM in DUWLs from dental practices in Tabriz, Iran. METHODS: Thirty 500-mL water samples were collected from DUWLs in private and university-affiliated clinics (May-October 2024) after a 20-30 s

The Impact of COVID-19 on Infection Control Measures in Dental Settings: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on every aspect of life, especially for healthcare professionals. Dentists are the most at risk of infection due to close contact with patients. This study aimed to assess the level of awareness, perception, and attitude of Palestinian dentists towards COVID-19 and infection control. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from 17-30 July 2020, and 349 dentists from the West Bank participated. The survey assessed demographic variables, participation in infection control training, prevention methods used in dental clinics, patient prepara

Drug Delivery (Nano)Platforms for Oral and Dental Applications: Tissue Regeneration, Infection Control, and Cancer Management.

The oral cavity and oropharynx are complex environments that are susceptible to physical, chemical, and microbiological insults. They are also common sites for pathological and cancerous changes. The effectiveness of conventional locally-administered medications against diseases affecting these oral milieus may be compromised by constant salivary flow. For systemically-administered medications, drug resistance and adverse side-effects are issues that need to be resolved. New strategies for drug delivery have been investigated over the last decade to overcome these obstacles. Synthesis of nanop

Use of graphene nanocomposites for air disinfection in dental clinics: A game-changer in infection control.

This manuscript features the promising findings of a study conducted by Ju et al, who used graphene nanocomposites for air disinfection in dental clinics. Their study demonstrated that, compared with conventional filters, graphene nanocomposites substantially improved air quality and reduced microbial contamination. This manuscript highlights the innovative application of graphene materials, emphasizing their potential to enhance dental clinic environments by minimizing secondary pollution. On the basis of the unique antimicrobial properties of graphene and the original study's rigorous method

Microfluidics-based engineered silver nanoparticles to control growth and biofilm formation in bacterial pathogens causing dental infection.

Dental infections caused by Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis are major contributors to dental caries and root canal infections due to their strong biofilm forming ability across all age groups. This present study aimed to develop a microfluidics-assisted green synthesis approach for the fabrication of Clitoria ternatea-derived silver nanoparticles (CtAgNPs) and to evaluate their antibacterial and antibiofilm potential in dental pathogens. The bioactive compounds present in Clitoria ternatea floral extract act as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent within a microfluidics syst

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding cross-infection control among dental laboratory technicians in Bulgaria: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cross-infection control is essential for high-quality oral health care. Dental technicians, as key members of the dental team, handle clinical materials and manage laboratory processes that pose biological risks. Despite their university-level training in Bulgaria, little is known about their awareness, attitudes, and compliance with infection control standards. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2024 to March 2025 among dental technicians registered with the Bulgarian Dental Technician Association. An online questionnaire was used to assess thei

Effect of Video-Assisted Reflective Practice on Infection Control Performance During Oral Hygiene Procedures Performed by Dental Hygienists.

PURPOSE: The dental clinic environment is highly vulnerable to cross-infection from patients' blood and oral fluids. Regular training is vital to prevent cross-contamination between healthcare providers and patients. This study evaluated the effectiveness of video-assisted reflective practice compared to traditional verbal Instruction for infection-control education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental hygienists participated in the study, during which their dental calculus removal procedures were video-recorded. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the verbal instruction group

Analysis of implementation status and influencing factors of standard infection control methods for dental environmental surfaces by dental hygienists in South Korea: a questionnaire-based study.

BACKGROUND: Given reports that the Coronavirus Disease 2019 can survive on environmental surfaces for a period, public attention to surface disinfection has increased. However, only a few studies have investigated the current status of standard infection control practices for environmental surfaces. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the implementation status of standard infection control methods for dental environmental surfaces among South Korean dental hygienists and to analyze the factors influencing these practices. METHODS: A survey was conducted to investigate surface infection control

Oral infections and dental factors in relation to oral cancer: a Swedish case--control study.

We investigated the role of oral infections, dentition and dental X-rays for oral cancer in a north Swedish population. This case-control study consisted of 410 cases with oral cancer for the period 1980-89 and 410 matched controls. All subjects received a mailed questionnaire. The response rates were 96% and 91% for cases and controls, respectively. The univariate analysis showed a statistically significant increased risk for oral cancer among individuals reporting problems with recurrent clinical oral infection (odds ratio (OR) 3.8). Separate analyses were made for groups with a clearly stat

Marked Improvement of Palmoplantar Pustulosis After the Reintroduction of Apremilast Following Initiation of Dental Infection Control and Periodontal Therapy.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent sterile pustules, erythema, scaling, and hyperkeratosis on the palms and soles. Oral infectious foci and periodontal inflammation have been implicated as aggravating factors, particularly in Japanese patients. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman with longstanding PPP and a previous course of apremilast that she had discontinued because of perceived insufficient benefit. At presentation, the Palmoplantar Pustulosis Area and Severity Index (PPPASI) score was 37.8. Dental evaluation identified multip

What Do the Dental Students Know about Infection Control? A Cross-Sectional Study in a Teaching Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Dental students are exposed to various infections and infective sources during their training, and on this aspect, their level of knowledge is suboptimal and practices are risky. Therefore, improving their knowledge and practices would contribute significantly to infection control. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the level of understanding of senior dental students regarding the infection control in the dental practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students (3rd year and 4th year) of the Foundation University Dental College, Pakistan. The sample consisted o
