The interaction of pathways to fear in childhood anxiety: a preliminary study.

Recent research has shown that the verbal information pathway to fear creates long-term fear cognitions and can create cognitive biases and avoidance in children. However, the interaction between the verbal information pathway to fear and other pathways is untested. This experiment exposed children (aged 6-8) to threat information about a novel animal to see the impact on a measure of avoidance after a subsequent simulated direct negative encounter with that animal. Results showed that a direct negative experience (without prior information) or threat information (without a subsequent negative

Risk perception, institutional trust and misinformation as correlates of public avoidance behaviour in South Korea following the Fukushima treated-water discharge: implications for radiological protection communication.

Public avoidance behaviour following radiological events can persist even when authoritative assessments judge the associated exposure to be negligible, posing a persistent challenge for radiological protection communication. Taking Japan's discharge of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS)-treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi site into the Pacific Ocean as a case, this study asks why comparable levels of perceived risk translate into avoidance behaviour for some individuals but not others. Drawing on risk perception theory, the trust literature and dual-process models of information pr

COVID-19 media fatigue: predictors of decreasing interest and avoidance of COVID-19-related news.

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19-related news is important for adherence to public health measures. We examined predictors of interest and avoidance of COVID-19 news in Lithuania. STUDY DESIGN: This is an online survey. METHODS: An online survey was conducted between October and December 2020 targeting the general population in Lithuania. Participants rated their interest and avoidance of news about the COVID-19 pandemic, with possible answers ranging from 'completely agree' to 'completely disagree'. The participants were also evaluated for symptoms of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-8), anxiet

Pathways involved in human conscious vision contribute to obstacle-avoidance behaviour.

Human patients with visual field defects following damage to their primary visual cortex (V1) will often misperceive the midpoint of a horizontal line. They tend to shift the midpoint away from the real position towards their blind field. In patients with unilateral neglect, where midpoint shifts can also be observed, these perceptual errors do not lead to errors in an obstacle-avoidance task, which also requires the ability to find the midpoint between two obstacles. This dissociation in neglect patients was taken as evidence that obstacle-avoidance performance is guided by visual information

Incentive-based, instructed, and social observational extinction of avoidance: Fear-opposite actions and their influence on fear extinction.

Avoidance is a transdiagnostic symptom of clinical anxiety and its reduction a major focus of cognitive-behavioral treatments. This study examined the instrumental extinction of goal-directed avoidance by means of incentives, verbal instruction, and social observation and their influence on fear extinction. Participants acquired conditioned fear and instrumental avoidance responses (N = 160). In four randomized groups, the reduction of avoidance by incentives for non-avoidance, instructions to refrain from avoidance, and social observation of non-avoidance was compared to no intervention befor

Cancer and Fertility: Exploring Uncertainty Management Strategies of Young Adult Female Survivors.

This study describes young adult female (YA-F) cancer survivors' uncertainty management strategies related to fertility/family building. Cross-sectional data were analyzed (n = 98). Participants reported higher rates of seeking information to reduce fertility-related uncertainty (M = 5.48, ±1.03), than avoiding information (M = 4.77, ±1.29). Controlling for relevant covariates (i.e., reproductive distress, household income, and health literacy), greater avoidance was related to higher reproductive distress (β = 0.293, p = 0.011) and lower household income (β = -0.281, p = 0.047). Evidence sugg

A cognitive approach to experimental amnesia.

A review of selected experiments indicates that not all examples of experimental amnesia are due to the failure of a memory to fixate. Briefly, the argument is that the fixation of a memory occurs within a very short time and that its retrieval is aided if it is coded into a contextual memory system. An amnesic agent serves to block (inhibit) memories rather than disrupt them and has its effects on active memories, whatever their age. In sum, the empirical retrograde amnesia gradient does not necessarily support traditional consolidation theory.

Air pollution, avoidance behaviour and children's respiratory health: evidence from England.

Despite progress in air pollution control, concerns remain over the health impact of poor air quality. Governments increasingly issue air quality information to enable vulnerable groups to avoid exposure. Avoidance behaviour potentially biases estimates of the health effects of air pollutants. But avoidance behaviour imposes a cost on individuals and therefore may not be taken in all circumstances. This paper exploits panel data at the English local authority level to estimate the relationship between children's daily hospital emergency admissions for respiratory diseases and common air pollut

Avoidance of eye gaze by adults who stutter.

PURPOSE: Adults who stutter are at significant risk of developing social phobia. Cognitive theorists argue that a critical factor maintaining social anxiety is avoidance of social information. This avoidance may impair access to positive feedback from social encounters that could disconfirm fears and negative beliefs. Adults who stutter are known to engage in avoidance behaviours, and may neglect positive social information. This study investigated the gaze behaviour of adults who stutter whilst giving a speech. METHOD: 16 adults who stutter and 16 matched controls delivered a 3-min speech to

What motivates short-form video consumption? Development and validation of a multidimensional short-form video use motivation scale.

Short-form video platforms have rapidly become a dominant mode of digital engagement, yet existing measures of user motivation have largely been adapted from broader social media or smartphone instruments rather than designed for the distinctive affordances of short-form video. The present research developed and validated the Multidimensional Short-Form Video Use Motivation Scale across two studies of frequent users (total N = 1728) aged 19-40. An initial item pool was generated through literature reviews and focus group interviews, followed by content validity evaluation. In Study 1 (n = 719)

Central activity of 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid (AP4).

The influence of intracerebroventricular (icv) injections of 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid (AP4) on the activity of central nervous system was examined in rats. The compound (100 and 200 micrograms icv) significantly enhanced apomorphine stereotypy, in doses of 50, 75, and 100 micrograms decreased haloperidol-induced catalepsy and did not change motility of rats estimated in the "open field" test. AP4 significantly improved learning and memory processes in passive and learning in active avoidance situation. The highest significant effect was observed after icv dose of 100 micrograms per rat,

Effects of "Dirty" Information on Disgust Responding to an Unknown Animal in Children: The Moderating Role of Maternal Disgust Proneness.

Although research has shown that disgust facilitates avoidance of small animals among adults, much less is known about disgust appraisals of small animals in children as well as the predictors of such appraisals. To address this gap, children (ages 5-13) were exposed to dirt-related and cleanliness-related information about unknown animals. The extent to which these types of information influenced children's feelings of fear, disgust, positivity, and avoidance behavior in relation to the animals was examined. The present study then examined the extent to which child and maternal disgust pronen

Attentional biases in older adults with generalized anxiety disorder.

Cognitive theories of anxiety propose that selective attention to negative information plays a central role in the development and maintenance of anxiety. The presence of such attentional bias has been confirmed in younger adults. Nevertheless, there are few studies that have explored anxiety-linked attentional bias in older adults, and the available results are inconclusive. Conversely, the socioemotional selectivity theory posits that there are age-related changes in emotional information processing and, consistent with this account, it has been found that older adults preferentially pay mor

An Enhanced Default Approach Bias Following Amygdala Lesions in Humans.

Approach and avoidance constitute a basic dimension of all animal behavior. Although a large number of studies have investigated approach and avoidance elicited by specific sensory stimuli, comparatively little is known about default approach biases when stimulus information is absent or reduced. The amygdala is well known to contribute to approach and avoidance behaviors in response to specific sensory stimuli; we tested whether the amygdala's role might extend to situations in which stimulus information is reduced. In a novel task, 3 patients with rare bilateral amygdala lesions (and control

Understanding clinical anger and violence: the anger avoidance model.

Although anger is a primary emotion and holds clear functional necessities, the presence of anger and its behavioral manifestations of aggression/violence can have serious emotional, health, and social consequences. Despite such consequences, the construct of clinical anger has to date suffered from few theoretical and treatment advancements and has received insufficient research attention. Thus, the purpose of this article is to introduce the Anger Avoidance Model, which is a new conceptualization of clinical anger and its behavioral manifestations. The Anger Avoidance Model suggests that amo

Quantifying mutual hesitation and identifying kinematic predictors in near-collision avoidance in walking.

Humans navigate crowded environments by anticipating others' movements. When such mutual anticipation fails, this may result in collisions or near-collisions. Previous research on mutual anticipation in collision avoidance has highlighted the importance of kinematic information. However, it remains unclear how full-body kinematics support mutual anticipation in truly interactive near-collision avoidance scenarios. We introduce cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA) as a novel method to quantify the degree of mutual hesitation (i.e., spatiotemporal overlap between walkers) in near-coll

Diazepam blocks the interfering effect of post-training behavioral manipulations on retention of a shuttle avoidance task.

Rats were submitted to a training and a test session of shuttle avoidance. Exposure to a session of extinction of this task either 2 or 24 h after training interfered with retention test performance. Exposure to an open field 2, but not 24 h after the avoidance training also interfered with retention. Diazepam blocked the deleterious effect of extinction and of the open field on retention of the avoidance task. Diazepam alone had no effect when given after avoidance training; it did, however, also interfere with retention when given prior to training. It is likely, therefore, that diazepam can

Assessing the clinical utility of agoraphobia in the context of panic disorder.

In the DSM-IV, a panic disorder (PD) diagnosis includes specification of agoraphobia, which is primarily an index of situational avoidance due to fear of panic. No other anxiety diagnosis requires specification of level of avoidance. This raises the question as to whether agoraphobia provides unique information beyond the core features of PD (i.e., panic attacks and panic-related worry). The incremental validity of agoraphobia, defined using DSM-IV specifiers versus level of situational avoidance, was examined in relation to the expression and treatment of PD (N=146). Analyses indicate that ag

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in the files of Australian servicemen hospitalized in 1942-1952.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology in servicemen hospitalized 1942-1952. METHOD: Hospital files of servicemen (n = 590) were studied and PTSD symptoms in groups, based on service experience, were compared. RESULTS: Based on their hospital files, 19% of servicemen were classified as having partial PTSD. No full cases of PTSD were identified, due primarily to the small number of recorded avoidance symptoms and the limited information in relation to the stressor criterion. Prisoners of war had the highest reported avoidance and lowest intrusive sympto

Association Between the Use of a Digital Health Platform During Pregnancy and Helping Users Avoid Emergency and In-Person Care: Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Almost one-third of pregnant people visit the emergency room during pregnancy. Although some emergency care is necessary, gaps in patient education and inaccessibility of preventive services have been identified as key reasons for high-cost, low-value care in pregnancy. Digital platforms present a promising solution for providing resources to supplement routine prenatal care, thereby reducing the use of low-value in-person services. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the relationship between the use of Maven and in-person care avoidance (emergency room or office visits) durin
