[Informed consent in health legislation of Mexico].

This paper deals with informed consent in Mexican Health Legislation in the context of a contract regulated by the Mexican Civil Code, in which a patient capable of making a thoughtful decision agrees to a specific plan of medical management and has received sufficient information, in a clear and explicit manner so that he/she can make a decision and in consequence agrees, or does not agree, to a course of action and to its consequences, under the Nuremberg Code. In Mexico, informed consent has recently been incorporated into health care legislation, and is basically oriented toward the field …

In Vitro Fertilization Informed Consent: Revisited, Empirically.

BACKGROUND: A thorough informed consent (IC) process is required before in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments can begin because these treatments are by and large elective and they have expectable and preventable complications, such as ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome and multi-fetal pregnancies. OBJECTIVES: To empirically examine whether patient knowledge and understanding of potential hazards associated with IVF treatment are better after the IC process compared to before. The authors hypothesized that patients' better understanding of potential complications would be translated and expr…

Informed Consent in Patients With Frailty Syndrome.

Frailty is present in more than 30% of individuals older than 65 years of age presenting for anesthesia and surgery, and poses a number of unique issues in the informed consent process. Much attention has been directed at the increased incidence of poor outcomes in these individuals, including postoperative mortality, complications, and prolonged length of stay. These material risks are not generally factored into conventional risk predictors, so it is likely that individuals with frailty are never fully informed of the true risk for procedures undertaken in the hospital setting. While the ter…

Hormone replacement therapy: informed consent without assessment?

Florence Ashley has argued that requiring patients with gender dysphoria to undergo an assessment and referral from a mental health professional before undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is unethical and may represent an unconscious hostility towards transgender people. We respond, first, by showing that Ashley has conflated the self-reporting of symptoms with self-diagnosis, and that this is not consistent with the standard model of informed consent to medical treatment. Second, we note that the model of informed consent involved in cosmetic surgery resembles the model Ashley defend…

Informed consent and hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

UNLABELLED: We present an ethical analysis from the perspective of shared decision-making and informed consent of a change in clinical management of infants born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). We reported a change in treatment of HLHS at the University of Alberta away from comfort care to life-saving surgery (LST) between 1987 and 1998. In a second review (1996-2001), 49/62 infants received LST, with 81% survival from the NICU and 58% at 35 mo. Eleven infants died preoperatively of non-cardiac conditions and two received elective comfort care. Sixteen infants had 18-mo Bayley Men…

Informed consent for presbyopic contact lens patients.

The doctrine of informed consent requires that health care practitioners provide each patient with sufficient information about a proposed treatment so that the patient can make a knowing, willing and intelligent decision about the recommended treatment. The need for a thorough, well documented informed consent is especially important when prescribing monovision or bifocal contact lenses for presbyopic patients because of the relatively low success rate and possible associated vision compromise. Patients should be advised of the alternatives available and provided with a supplemental or altern…

Communication and informed consent in clinical geriatrics.

Obtaining a valid informed consent from an elderly person, especially with possible senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT), first may involve solving the practical problems of effective communication. Perceptual constraints that frequently occur in the elderly and that may interfere with communication, i.e., the sharing of information, are auditory and/or visual. The most common auditory obstacle, presbycusis (the hearing loss for pure tones due to normal aging) and other hearing impairments, may make the communication of any information about a proposed research project difficult, if …

Perceptions, practices, and barriers in surgical informed consent: A cross-sectional study from Sudan: Surgical Informed Consent in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical surgical practice, yet significant challenges persist in ensuring patients' comprehension, particularly in low-resource settings. Cultural norms, literacy barriers, and limited institutional support often hinder truly informed decision-making. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2024 at a rural surgical center in Omdurman, Sudan. A total of 422 adult patients undergoing elective surgery were interviewed postoperatively using a validated, culturally adapted questionnaire. Descriptive a…

Enhancing Patients' Informed Consent Through AI: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is a cornerstone of medical ethics, ensuring that patients understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives of procedures before making health care decisions. However, challenges such as complex medical language, time constraints, and variations in patient literacy often hinder comprehension. Recent advancements in AI offer new opportunities to improve the informed consent process. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to assess AI's effectiveness in enhancing patient understanding and decision-making during the informed consent process. METHODS: Following the P…

Patients' understanding of "informed consent" in plastic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the patient's understanding of the informed consent form before and after plastic surgery. METHODS: This was a prospective analytical descriptive study that utilized a questionnaire on informed consent before and after plastic surgery procedures. RESULTS: Comprehension of informed consent was higher before surgery than after surgery (p=0.016; question 15). The higher the scholarity, the higher the comprehension (s=0.151; p=0.045) before surgery (question 4). For the other questions, it was not possible to find a difference in the pattern of understanding and in the assoc…

Informed consent for surgery: risk discussion and documentation.

Informed consent for surgery has become a critical component of surgical practice. There are specific legal requirements for what has to be disclosed to patients and for the accompanying documentation. The hospital consent for surgery form with the patient's signature is a small part of the process. A quality assurance review of the documentation of informed consent by our surgical group indicated major deficiencies and prompted this article (and its Appendix containing further information). Our intent was to inform surgeons about modern standards and to discuss particular challenges. Informed…
