[Training for diagnosis of intestinal parasitic diseases in the national laboratory system of Cuba].

A national training project in the diagnosis of intestinal parasites was conducted in 1997. An initial national course was followed respectively by courses in the Central, Eastern, and Western Provinces. Our results showed that Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and leukocytes showed a significantly lower percentage of errors after the training than before (p < 0.01). The same occurred with Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar and Chilomastix mesnilii (p < 0.05). Among the helminths, Taenia spp., Fasciola hepatica, and hookworm showed significantly fewer errors after the training (p <

[Blood hypereosinophilias. III. Symptomatic hypereosinophilias: allergic, cutaneous, parasitic, infective, pulmonary and gastro- intestinal diseases].

The most frequently observed of the symptomatic hypereosinophilias are those caused by allergic, cutaneous, parasitic, infectious, pulmonary and gastroenteric conditions. Among the allergic conditions, particular attention is paid to the hypereosinophilias caused by allergic asthma, gastroenteritis and reactions to drugs. The most common skin conditions linked to hypereosinophilias such as bullous dermatites and angio-oedema are considered. Turning to the parasitic conditions, the various types of parasite that may produce hypereosinophilias by infesting the organs are examined. The aetiology

[Therapeutic possibilities in diseases caused by intestinal parasites].

Compatible and efficient drugs for the therapy, caused by protozoal- or helminthic-infections, are available today. Many of them are not registered in Austria. Metronidazole, Mebendazole and Praziquantel are particularly effective. Most protozoal-infections can be treated with metronidazole. Mebendazole can be used against numerous nematode-infections (Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Oxyuriasis, Ancylostomiasis), Niclosamide against cestode-infections (Taeniasis, Hymenolepiasis, Diphyllobothriasis), whereas, Praziquantel is applied against trematode-infections.

Progression of the load of waterborne and intestinal parasitic diseases in the State of Amazonas.

In the State of Amazonas, Brazil, urban expansion together with precarious basic sanitation conditions and human settlement on river banks has contributed to the persistence of waterborne and intestinal parasitic diseases. Time series of the recorded cases of cholera, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and leptospirosis are described, using data from different levels of the surveillance systems. The sources for intestinal parasitosis prevalence data (non-compulsory reporting in Brazil) were Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Literatura Latino-Americana (LILACS) and the

[Effects of training of human intestinal parasitic diseases for basic health staff in Jiangsu Province].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the training of human intestinal parasitic diseases for basic health staff. METHODS: A workshop including theory courses and practical operations was carried out. At the end of the workshop, the effects were evaluated through the examinations of theory and film-reading. The total score of film-reading was one hundred including reading ten modified thick Kato-Katz slides in five minutes per slide. The results were analyzed statistically with SAS 9.0. RESULTS: There were 162 trainees from 13 cities. All of them took part in the final examination. The highes

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic diseases in school children of rural areas of district Lower Dir, Pakistan.

Present study was conducted among school children to recognize the prevalence of IPIs in rural communities of district Dir Lower, Pakistan. A sum of 324 samples of stool were collected (210 boys and 114 girls). Used direct smear method and formol ether sedimentation concentration technique for processing the samples. The result shows that 82% (n=266) were found infected comprised 64.8% male and 35.1% females. Children of the age group 10 to 12 years were found extremely infected 94.2% while 4-6 year age group were having minimum ratio of infection 72%. Current study shows mono parasitism in 50

Intestinal parasites in pediatric patients with diarrhoeal diseases in Bangkok.

Stool examinations of 147 pediatric patients with diarrhoeal disease were carried out at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok by using the direct-smear technique. Parasites were equally prevalent in males and females and without any age group predilection. The prevalence of intestinal parasites were Entamoeba histolytica 6.8%, Giardia lamblia 6.1%, others were Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Balantidium coli. [Intestinal parasitic diseases in an urban environment in Sahel. A study in a district of Niamey, Niger].

Health and environment in Niamey, a capital in Sahel, are particularly linked owing to population growth, promiscuity and large pollution induced by human and animal excreta. One district, located in the centre of the town, was surveyed for drinking water quality (ammoniac and bacterial count) and use, as well as for the prevalence of parasites through both a random sample (fixed tools with methiolate-iodine-formaldehyde) and a systematic one (scotch-test). Water consumption was 16.5 litres/day/man from fresh water supplies (87%) and private wells (13%). Ammoniac measures were low in the wells
