Ovarian pregnancy associated with copper-7 intrauterine device.

This report documents the second case of an ovarian pregnancy with a Cu-7 intrauterine contraceptive device. All of Spiegelberg's criteria were satisfied. A summary of the literature is presented, revealing 33 ovarian pregnancies in users of an IUD. The overall frequency of primary ovarian pregnancy is 1:40,000 deliveries. There is a ratio of one ovarian pregnancy to nine ectopic pregnancies among IUD users, compared to 1:150 to 1:200 in the general population.

Evaluation of copper-7 intrauterine device in Malaysian women.

A study of 300 Malaysian women who were fitted with the Copper-7 intrauterine device is presented. Two per cent of the acceptors were nulliparous. Insertion was easy in 97-7% of the cases and the side effects were minimal. In a study of over 4,634 women-months a low cumulative expulsion rate, at 12 and 24 months of use, of 3-1 and 3-6 respectively, was observed. However, relatively high cumulative rates of pregnancy of 4-3 and 9-2 occurred at 12 and 24 months of use respectively. Out of a total of 19 pregnancies, in 12 cases the device was found to have descended, a finding not commonly report

A Literature Review of the Effects of Copper Intrauterine Devices on Blood Copper Levels in Humans.

Copper is a trace mineral that is essential to human health but can be harmful in excess. Since the introduction of copper-containing intrauterine devices in the 1970s, their possible relationship to abnormal/toxic blood copper levels has been researched. Here, we summarize and interpret 12 studies that evaluate blood copper levels in users of copper-containing intrauterine devices. The data are inconclusive, with the results of eight studies indicating no increase in blood copper levels with use and the results of four studies showing significant increases in blood copper levels with use. How do thiol disulfide balance and copper-ceruloplasmin levels change in women using copper intrauterine devices?

ObjectivesWe aimed to examine the change in plasma copper (Cu) level and copper transport proteins level before inserting Cu-IUD and after one menstrual cycle and to show the effect of this change on the thiol disulfide balance in women using copper-containing intrauterine device (Cu-IUD).MethodThirty-three reproductive women who admitted to the gynecology clinic and inserted Cu-IUD were examined in this study. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis, plasma Cu and ceruloplasmin levels and ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity were measured using the blood samples collected just before inserting Cu-IUD and a

Twelve-month outcomes of rotated copper intrauterine devices after immediate postpartum insertion.

OBJECTIVE(S): To describe clinical outcomes of copper intrauterine devices (Cu-IUDs) inserted immediately postpartum that subsequently assumed a rotated position. STUDY DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a postpartum IUD cohort using medical record data from women with rotated Cu T380A IUDs identified by transvaginal ultrasound 30-120 days after delivery who elected to maintain the device and were followed for 12 months. RESULTS: Among 2105 insertions, 1813 had follow-up data available. Ninety-three devices (5.1%) were rotated. Of these, 73 asymptomatic women elected to maintain the device and we

Levonorgestrel-releasing and copper intrauterine devices and the risk of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: This study compares the risk of breast cancer for levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices (LNG(IUD)) versus copper IUDs (CU(IUD)) in women younger than 50 years of age. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, population-based, case-control study using cancer registers in Finland and Germany, powered to exclude a 1.5-fold risk of breast cancer. RESULTS: Analysis of 5113 breast cancer cases diagnosed 2000-2007 and 20,452 controls - matched by year of birth and area of residence - yielded relative risk estimates approaching unity with 95% CI crossing 1.0 for all comparisons, including ev

Hysteroscopic removal of copper-containing intrauterine devices with missing tails during pregnancy.

During a 15-month period, CO2 hysteroscopy was carried out on 21 pregnant women wearing IUDs with retracted tails. Ultrasonography was done prior to hysteroscopy to determine the size of the gestational sac and the site of the device. Successful removal of the device occurred in 17 cases. The paper describes the technique, the findings of the study, and the limitations of the procedure.

Six-month expulsion of postplacental copper intrauterine devices placed after vaginal delivery.

BACKGROUND: Immediate placement of an intrauterine device after vaginal delivery is safe and convenient, but longitudinal data describing clinical outcomes have been limited. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the proportion of TCu380A (copper) intrauterine devices expelled, partially expelled, malpositioned, and retained, as well as contraceptive use by 6 months postpartum, and determine risk factors for expulsion and partial expulsion. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective, observational study, women who received a postplacental TCu380A intrauterine device at vaginal delivery were enrolled post

Chronic Systemic Toxicity Study of Copper Intrauterine Devices in Female Wistar Rats.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the chronic systemic and local toxicity of a copper intrauterine device in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Cu-IUD fragments were inserted into the uterine horns of female Wistar rats for 26 weeks (equivalent 15.42-17.33 years in humans). We tested copper at 20, 40, and 60 times the clinical dosages to study copper toxicity under severe conditions. Classic chronic systemic toxicity evaluations, including body weight, hematology, organ coefficient, and tissue reactions, were performed. RESULTS The body weight of the rats increased during the 26

Copper-T intrauterine device and levonorgestrel intrauterine system: biological bases of their mechanism of action.

All intrauterine devices (IUDs) that have been tested experimentally or clinically induce a local inflammatory reaction of the endometrium whose cellular and humoral components are expressed in the tissue and the fluid filling the uterine cavity. Depending on the reproductive strategy of the species considered and the anatomical features and physiologic mechanisms that characterize their reproductive system, the secondary consequences of this foreign body reaction can be very localized within the uterus, as in the rabbit, or widespread throughout the entire genital tract as in women or even sy

Retained Copper Intrauterine Device Fragment in Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Copper intrauterine device (IUD) failure and fragmentation are rare, with minimal documentation on their effects in pregnancy. Recommendations from professional organizations highlight the importance of prompt identification and surgical removal, as case reports have noted various acute and chronic intra-abdominal pathologies. However, limited guidance exists around counseling patients who are pregnant with a retained IUD fragment. Here, we present a case of a normal pregnancy with a retained copper IUD fragment, while reviewing existing data on management and counseling.
