PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the advantages and limitations of the various iris prostheses as treatment for aniridia.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple prosthetic iris devices have been developed for implantation in eyes with aniridia. However, none is currently approved for use in the USA.
SUMMARY: Aniridia can be congenital or traumatic in etiology and can lead to glare and other visual disturbances. Iris cysts are uncommon in childhood and can present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 5-year-old boy with Marfan syndrome who, 9 months after an uncomplicated lensectomy with iris-sutured intraocular lens (IOL), developed a translucent epithelial inclusion cyst. The cyst was observed without treatment and no complications developed. To our knowledge, this is the first case of an iris cyst in a child after implantation of an iris-sutured IOL. This potential complication should be considered when implanting IOLs in children.

Two middle-aged patients developed pigmented intrastromal iris nevi and an associated loss of the surrounding iris stromal markings suggestive of a surface iris membrane. Because of the fear of malignant melanoma with superficial growth, we excised the lesions. Iris monkeys resistant to repeated infections with B. malayi were subjected to immunosuppression by treatment with cortisone. Degree of immunosuppression was measured by: (a) blood counts, (b) lymphocyte transformation to mitogens and (c) immunofluorescent antibody to microfilarial antigens. BACKGROUND: Lesions of the iris require a thorough examination to differentiate them from malignant melanoma because of the severe therapeutic consequences of the latter entity.
METHODS: We observed two cases with a unilateral lesion on the iris, both suspicious of malignant melanoma of the iris. Ophthalmological, echographic and ultrasound biomicroscopic examinations were done.

Feline diffuse iris melanoma (FDIM) is a common ocular neoplasm, typically affecting older cats, characterized by progressive hyperpigmentation and potential malignancy. This study evaluated the diagnostic value of iris biopsies in distinguishing FDIM from benign iris melanosis.
