High temperature oxidation of iron-iron oxide core-shell nanowires composed of iron nanoparticles.

This work describes an oxidation process of iron-iron oxide core-shell nanowires at temperatures between 100 °C and 800 °C. The studied nanomaterial was synthesized through a simple chemical reduction of iron trichloride in an external magnetic field under a constant flow of argon. The electron microscopy investigations allowed determining that the as-prepared nanowires were composed of self-assembled iron nanoparticles which were covered by a 3 nm thick oxide shell and separated from each other by a thin interface layer. Both these layers exhibited an amorphous or highly-disordered character …

Iron Chelation in Movement Disorders: Logical or Ironical.

Iron is probably as old as the universe itself and is essential for sustaining biological processes. The remarkable property of iron complexes to facilitate electron transfer makes it a significant component of redox reactions that drive the essential steps in nucleic acid biosynthesis and cellular functions. This, however, also generates potentially harmful hydroxyl radicals causing cell damage. In the movement disorder world, iron accumulation is well known to occur in neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation, while dysfunctional iron homeostasis has been linked with neurodegenerative …

Iron supplementation and iron-fortified foods: a review.

About one-third of the world population is suffering from iron deficiency. Delivery of iron through diet is a practical, economical, and sustainable approach. Clinical studies have shown that the consumption of iron-fortified foods is one of the most effective methods for the prevention of iron deficiency. However, supplementing iron through diet can cause undesirable side-effects. Thus, it is essential to develop new iron-rich ingredients, iron-fortified products with high bioavailability, better stability, and lower cost. It is also essential to develop newer processing technologies for more…

Iron Supplements for Infants at Risk for Iron Deficiency.

Professional societies have published recommendations for iron dosing of preterm neonates, but differences exist between guidelines. To help develop standardized guidelines, we performed a 10-year analysis of iron dosing in groups at risk for iron deficiency: IDM (infants of diabetic mothers), SGA (small for gestational age), and VLBW premature neonates (very low birth weight, <1500 g). We analyzed iron dosing after red cell transfusions and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA). Of IDM, 11.8% received iron in the hospital; 9.8% of SGA and 27.1% of VLBW neonates received iron. Twenty percent…

Iron sensors and signals in response to iron deficiency.

The transcription of genes involved in iron acquisition in plants is induced under iron deficiency, but our understanding of iron sensors and signals remains limited. Iron Deficiency-responsive Element-binding Factor 1 (IDEF1) and Hemerythrin motif-containing Really Interesting New Gene- and Zinc-finger proteins (HRZs)/BRUTUS (BTS) have recently emerged as candidate iron sensors because of their functions as potent regulators of iron deficiency responses and their iron-binding properties. IDEF1 is a central transcriptional regulator of graminaceous genes involved in iron uptake and utilization…

Erythropoietin hyporesponsiveness: from iron deficiency to iron overload.

Iron deficiency is the most frequently encountered cause of suboptimal response to recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). Carefully assessing iron status is of paramount importance in chronic renal failure patients prior to or during rHuEPO therapy. Because there is great need for iron in the EPO-stimulated erythroid progenitors, it is essential that serum ferritin and transferrin saturation levels should be maintained over 300 microg/liter and 30%, respectively. Investigators have shown that oral iron is unlikely to keep pace with the iron demand for an optimal rHuEPO response in uremics.…

Iron metabolism and iron deficiency anemia in women.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are highly prevalent among women across their reproductive age. An iron-deficient state has been associated with and causes a number of adverse health consequences, affecting all aspects of the physical and emotional well-being of women. Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy, and the postpartum period are the major causes of ID and IDA. However, despite the high prevalence and the impact on quality of life, ID and IDA among women in their reproductive age is still underdiagnosed and undertreated. In this chapter we summarized the iron metabol…

Iron metabolism and iron supplementation in cancer patients.

Iron deficiency and iron deficiency-associated anemia are common complications in cancer patients. Most iron deficient cancer patients present with functional iron deficiency (FID), a status with adequate storage iron, but insufficient iron supply for erythroblasts and other iron dependent tissues. FID is the consequence of the cancer-associated cytokine release, while in absolute iron deficiency iron stores are depleted resulting in similar but often more severe symptoms of insufficient iron supply. Here we present a short review on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, clinical sympt…

Body iron metabolism and pathophysiology of iron overload.

Iron is an essential metal for the body, while excess iron accumulation causes organ dysfunction through the production of reactive oxygen species. There is a sophisticated balance of body iron metabolism of storage and transport, which is regulated by several factors including the newly identified peptide hepcidin. As there is no passive excretory mechanism of iron, iron is easily accumulated when exogenous iron is loaded by hereditary factors, repeated transfusions, and other diseased conditions. The free irons, non-transferrin-bound iron, and labile plasma iron in the circulation, and the l…

IRON METABOLISM IN EXPERIMENTAL ANEMIA : "AVAILABILITY OF IRON".

In experimental anemia in dogs due to blood loss the term "available iron" as determined by the dipyridyl test has no physiological significance. Iron salts (100 per cent available by dipyridyl) given in optimum dose (560 mg. per 2 weeks) will cause a net production of 50 to 55 gm. hemoglobin above the control base line in anemic dogs. This means that an iron salt which is rated as 100 per cent available by the dipyridyl test is only 35 per cent physiologically available. The term "available iron (dipyridyl)" simmers down to iron not in the form of hematin compounds. The absorption of this "av…

[Iron deficiency anemia and newly available iron preparations].

The body does not possess an active export system for iron. Therefore, the amount of iron uptake is usually small; iron metabolism in the body should be considered a "semi-closed system." However, iron needed for erythropoiesis can be lacking in the case of continuous bleeding, and thus, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) would occur. IDA is the most common form of anemia; approximately 70% of anemia is IDA. Therefore, upper and lower endoscopies or gynecological procedures should be used to treat bleeding sites; in addition, the small intestine can now be widely observed and treated by double-ballo…

[Iron quantification in iron overload disease using MRI].

Iron as an essential nutrient is involved in multiple metabolic activities. The importance of a sufficient iron supply is stressed by the fact that, according to WHO data, about 30 % of the global population suffers from iron deficiency and resulting anemia. In contrast, hereditary hemochromatosis is the most common monogeneous inherited disease (prevalence of homozygous genotype 1:200 - 300 in Germany). While iron-induced anemia can be handled by relatively simple diagnostic and therapeutic management, the diagnosis and quantification of organ iron overload is far more challenging. This is of…

Iron sucrose: the oldest iron therapy becomes new.

Several parenteral iron preparations are now available. This article focuses on iron sucrose, a hematinic, used more widely than any other for more than five decades, chiefly in Europe and now available in North America. Iron sucrose has an average molecular weight of 34 to 60 kd, and after intravenous (IV) administration, it distributes into a volume equal to that of plasma, with a terminal half-life of 5 to 6 hours. Transferrin and ferritin levels can be measured reliably 48 hours after IV administration of this agent. Iron sucrose carries no "black-box" warning, and a test dose is not requi…
