It is not always possible to administer antituberculosis pharmacotherapy orally for reasons that may be a direct consequence of tuberculosis itself. To our knowledge, no published literature is available regarding antituberculosis drug absorption via feeding tube. We present the case of a patient with tuberculosis meningitis who required medication administration via percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (PEJ) tube. Blood samples were collected during the continuation phase of antituberculosis therapy, immediately before dose administration, and then at 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after dose administra…

BACKGROUND: To supplement nutrition, jejunostomy has been widely adopted as an adjunct surgical procedure for Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy. Most Chinese surgeons have a preference for parenteral nutrition even though it has some disadvantages compared with jejunostomy. In this report, we describe a new approach that allows the quick insertion of a feeding tube in Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy. We retrospectively analyze cases that have applied this approach and compare the advantages and disadvantages of jejunostomy.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2012, 131 patients underwent Ivor-Lewis es…

Spontaneous migration of enteral feeding tubes is unusual. We report an 18-year-old man with corrosive stricture of the upper esophagus in whom feeding jejunostomy was performed using an 18F Levine's tube. Thirteen months later, he presented with absence of the tube. The patient was tolerating liquid diet and was managed conservatively. Serial radiographs and colonoscopy showed a steady progress of the tube through the gut. The tube was passed out spontaneously after 20 days.

Laparoscopic gastrostomy (LG) and laparoscopic jejunostomy (LJ) were performed successfully on 22 consecutive patients after development of the procedure on a porcine model. Patients did not undergo percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies (PEG) due to obstruction from head and neck, esophageal cancer, gastropexy for gastric volvulus, perforated esophagus, failed PEGs, or surgeon's preference. Operative time averaged < 20.5 min. Five patients underwent the procedure under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation and three patients were operated on in a strictly outpatient setting. There was one…

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies have gained wide use for long-term enteral nutrition. However, gastroesophageal reflux and aspiration pneumonia have occurred following this procedure. Initial enthusiasm concerning the ability of intrajejunal feeding to negate the risk of aspiration has been challenged by some reports. In this report, a new method is described for concomitant placement of endoscopic gastrostomy and feeding jejunostomy wherein the tip of the feeding jejunostomy is placed at least 40 cm distal to the pylorus while the gastrostomy tube is used for drainage. Twenty critically…

Jejunostomy-related intussusception is an exceptionally rare postoperative complication, accounting for less than 1% of all small-bowel obstructions. It may result from mechanical irritation or altered motility around the feeding tube. We describe the case of a 63-year-old man with unresectable adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia who underwent exploratory laparotomy with placement of a feeding jejunostomy, followed by palliative chemotherapy. A few days after surgery, he developed progressive abdominal distension and clinical signs of bowel obstruction. Abdominal CT revealed small-bowel dilat…

PURPOSE: Jejunal feeding (JF) indications in children have recently increased. However, surgical jejunostomy (SJ) is reported to be subjected to a high complication rate. The aim of the study is to focus on safety, effectiveness, and complications of SJ and to identify those categories of patients who could most benefit from it.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all SJ performed at Giannina Gaslini Children's Hospital between 2014 and 2022 was performed. Data were collected regarding demographics characteristics, past medical history, surgical indications, surgical technique (Roux-en-y (RE…

Enteral nutrition through jejunostomy is a common practice in any general surgery service; it carries a low risk of complications and morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a patient with an immediate history of subtotal gastrectomy that began nutrition through jejunostomy and complicated with intestinal necrosis due to non-occlusive ischemia in the short period. The purpose of this work is to report on this complication, its pathophysiology and risk factors to take it into account and be able to take appropriate therapeutic action early.

Feeding jejunal tubes provide an excellent method for enteral nutritional support in cases where the oral route is impossible or insufficien … assed spontaneously through the rectum 18 days later. One should be careful during the placement of jejunostomy tubes, and health care providers and patients should be instructed well in the care of feeding enterostomy tubes in order to prevent this complication.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility and safety of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy(PEJ).
METHODS: From June 1996 to April 2005, clinical data of 121 patients treated with PEG or PEJ were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: A total of 121 patients experienced 134 times of PEG or PEG plus PEJ, including 90 cases (103 times) treated with PEG and 31 patients treated with PEG plus PEJ. Thirteen patients treated with PEG had fistula replacement 6-10 months after PEG. All patients had quick nutrition recovery after fistula tube insert, therefore …

BACKGROUND: Intussusception can occur anywhere in the small and large bowel, ileocolic intussusception is the most common type in adult and there are few reported cases of jejunojejunal intussusception. Here we report a case of jejunojejunal intussusception due to an iatrogenic lead point at the feeding jejunostomy closure site.
CASE PRESENTATION: In 2019 we received a 63-year-old female complaining of abdominal pain, constipation, and repeated vomiting for five days. On physical examination, she was dehydrated, in pain, and had a nasogastric tube that was draining bilious fluid. The abdomen …

In cancer patients with tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract, dysphagia and cachexia require gastrostomy or jejunostomy as the only options for enteral access for long-term feeding. In this article, the authors describe a modified placement of laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy applied during laparoscopic oncology layering technique. After performing an exploratory laparoscopy, a feeding jejunostomy is performed using a Foley silicon catheter, through an eyelet in the mesentery of the descending colon. After completing the introduction of the jejunal probe according to the Witzel technique…

Placement of percutaneous jejunostomy tubes using fluoroscopy may be technically challenging because of the peristaltic motion of small bowel loops within the peritoneum. Furthermore, fluoroscopic jejunostomy placement has an inherent risk of complications, including peritonitis and death. A transnasal snare technique to facilitate direct jejunostomy in patients with a surgically altered gastric anatomy has been previously reported. This report describes a patient with gastroparesis and a chronic nasojejunal tube who underwent a percutaneous transgastric snare technique to facilitate the place…

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing peritonitis is a rare, life-threatening complication of peritonitis involving inflammation and necrosis of the peritoneal lining. We report a unique case of necrotizing peritonitis following laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy in a patient with esophageal carcinoma. With a limited number of cases reported due to its rarity, this case highlights the importance of recognition of aberrant postoperative complications and early surgical intervention.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with distal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent l…

Chronic pancreatitis is a benign inflammatory disorder, which can lead to severe and persistent symptoms. Patients with recurrent episodes of abdominal pain often require endoscopic treatments, which are frequently associated with inadequate symptom relief. In selected patients, surgical treatment allows for a greater long-term pain reduction. As one of the first teams reporting this approach, we present a didactical video with a stepwise technique to perform a robotic Puestow procedure. This technical report details a robotic approach to complete a latero-lateral pancreatojejunostomy in patient…
