A 53-year-old Caucasian with keloid formation on the palmar surface of the hand following Dupuytren's contracture release is presented. Only two other cases of keloid formation on the hand have been found in English literature, both on black patients. This is the first known case with association of Dupuytren's disease to be reported. Surgical excision of the keloid with intraoperative injection of triamcinolone of the wound edges resulted in clinical cure.

A 19-year-old Arab woman who was previously operated on to desyndactylize her right second and third digits is presented in this case report. The patient's toes resyndactylized postoperatively and a keloid scar developed on the dorsum of her incision site. Syndactylism of digits is often discussed when involving the hand. However, it is much less frequently presented when it involves the foot, because surgical intervention is seldom necessary unless foot function is affected. Keloid scars are commonly encountered and pose a challenge to the podiatric physician because of their recalcitrant and…

BACKGROUND: Despite their benign nature, keloids may constitute a severe aesthetic and, in some cases, functional problem with important repercussions on patients' quality of life. There is no consensus on keloid treatment and no wholly satisfactory therapy has yet emerged.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of cryotherapy in the treatment of keloids.
METHODS: 135 patients with 166 keloids received cryosurgical treatment between 1990 and 2004. Freeze times and number of sessions varied. Scar volume was measured before and after treatment. Median follow-up was 48.6 months (range 12.4-72.6 mont…

Keloids are a benign proliferative growth of dermal fibrous tissue, usually resulting from an excessive tissue response to skin trauma or disease in predisposed individuals. The basic cause is unknown. Hypertrophic scars are similar lesions but they will, in time, show some degree of resolution. These lesions can be aesthetically disfiguring and cause functional disturbances. This paper reviews current knowledge of the treatment modalities for keloids and hypertrophic scars. Most physicians emphasize the importance of prevention. No single therapeutic modality is the best. Current various trea…

Keloids present a major therapeutic dilemma for the surgeon because of frequent recurrences. We use a new protocol for management of large primary or recalcitrant keloids. The technique employs carbon dioxide laser resection of the keloid and then allows the open wound bed to heal by secondary intention. The open wound is treated as though it were a third-degree skin burn. The wounds invariably orient their long axis parallel to the relaxed skin tension lines. No keloid has ever been noted to recur before epithelial migration is complete. Careful follow-up detects early recurrences that are th…

Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a common cutaneous infection occurring in the bearded area of the face of black men. The infection is caused by ingrown hairs that produce an inflammatory foreign body reaction characterized by papules and pustules at the point of hair penetration that may result in permanent scarring, usually in grooved patterns, and occasionally in keloids. The purpose of this article is to describe the successful treatment of a patient with pseudofolliculitis with keloids that was based on the pathophysiology of the disease and the biology of wound repair.

By modifying the wound healing process, it is possible to deal effectively with most abnormal forms of scarring, through perhaps 15 per cent … of these modalities are applicable to appropriate lesions. In the established hypertrophic scar or keloid, lesions of resonable size on the trunk can be treated with intralesional injections of triamcinolone only; lesions larger than 75 sq cm or facial lesions can be excised and closed or shaved and grafted, again with one or all of the above mentioned …

Keloids are characterized by excessive collagen deposition and persistent inflammation, causing high morbidity and recurrence with limited effective treatments. In this study, MIL-100(Fe)- a metal-organic framework composed of ferrous/ferric ion nodes and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate ligands- is synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and demonstrated nanoscale particle size (141.7 nm). In vitro, human keloid fibroblasts maintained >90% viability after 48 h with MIL-100(Fe) treatment and showed robust cellular uptake within 2 h, compared to PBS-treated controls. MIL-100(Fe) sig…

Decorin is a natural transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) antagonist. Reduced decorin synthesis is associated with dermal scarring, and increased decorin expression appears to reduce scar tissue formation. To investigate the therapeutic potential of decorin for keloids, human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and keloid-derived fibroblasts (KFs) were transduced with decorin-expressing adenovirus (dE1-RGD/GFP/DCN), and we examined the therapeutic potential of decorin-expressing Ad for treating pathologic skin fibrosis. Decorin expression was examined by immunofluorescence assay on keloid tissues. HDF…

BACKGROUND: Until now, clinical studies dealing with pediatric keloids are extremely rare considering widespread controversies over the mode of inheritance of keloids. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there have been no reports analyzing this condition systemically. The purpose of this study was to summarize the baseline characteristics of a cohort of pediatric patients and recommend our effective regimens. A total of 203 pediatric patients with keloid were treated at our hospital.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed data including patient age, sex, etiology, anatomic location…

Keloids are an exuberant response to skin wound healing in which abundant scar tissue grows beyond the boundaries of the inciting insult. Age, race, location, family history and personal history of keloids are relevant factors concerning the risk of developing keloids. Because keloids are prone to recurrence after surgical excision, post-operative management plays an important role in the treatment of keloids. There are many modalities that can be used to treat keloids or prevent their recurrence; a multimodal approach is often necessary in difficult cases.

Keloidal or nodular scleroderma (NS) is a variant of localized scleroderma (LS) frequently seen in patients with limited or diffuse systemic sclerosis (SSc). It presents as raised, firm plaques or nodules with extensive dermal fibrosis and hyalinized collagen bundles. We present a patient with SSc who presented with this rare entity.

Keloids are pathological scars extending beyond the initial wound's natural borders. The condition occurs as a result of impaired wound healing with excessive collagen deposition. Keloid scars frequently recur, rarely regress, and have a tendency to grow over time. They are aesthetically disfiguring and can be devastating for patients, both physically and emotionally. This review finds that prevention and early intervention are essential for good results. Treatment is often challenging. There are no standardized management guidelines currently available but a combinational therapeutic approach…

INTRODUCTION: Keloids are fibroproliferative disorders that are characterized by histological accumulation of collagens and fibroblasts, refractory clinical symptoms such as itching, topical invasiveness, and frequent postsurgical recurrence. At present, to treat or prevent keloids, new drugs are currently being designed and the pharmaceutical indications of known drugs are being expanded.
AREAS COVERED: The current pharmacological interventions for keloids are mainly described on the basis of the various hypotheses on keloid etiology and the keloid ingredients that are targeted. These interv…

The mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of keloids have not been fully characterized despite extensive past and present research. Results of past and present studies have shown that the immune system is actively involved in the development of these lesions. Future investigations into the biochemistry and immunologic factors of keloids are anticipated and expected to produce additional insight. The inability to identify cellular (fibroblast) abnormalities has led most investigators to focus on the humoral regulators of wound healing, that is, biochemical substances, immunologic mediators and…

Keloid formation is a rare complication of normal scar tissue development, also to the surgeon who performs surgery on the external ear. We are presenting 4 cases of keloid formation which occurred after ear piercing in 2 cases and after otoplasty in another 2 cases. The treatment of keloid formation caused difficulties and is not unequivocal. Therefore we wish to present our experiences as we have seen no cases of keloid formation after otoplasty described in the literature.
